Overview
Ryokan Ohashi has preserved its original charm since opening in 1933. From the moment you step inside, you’ll notice the antique atmosphere and timeless craftsmanship. This ryokan sits beside the Mitoku River in Misasa Onsen, a region known for its rare hot springs and natural beauty. The building itself is a nationally registered tangible cultural property, showcasing traditional Japanese architecture shaped by shrine carpenters. Each hallway and beam carries decades of stories, offering you a stay that feels both historic and deeply personal.
Whether you’re traveling solo, as a couple, or with family, the ryokan provides a place to relax, recharge, and enjoy the natural gifts of Tottori Prefecture.
Accommodation
Every room at Ryokan Ohashi offers something unique. No two rooms are the same, and each one has its own design, shape, and view. From the window or wide veranda, you can gaze out over the Mitoku River or the lush forest beyond. Many rooms include open-air baths, and some combine Japanese and Western styles for added comfort.
The Special Room Kiri no Ma includes beds and a hot spring bath made with cypress wood, plus views over the river and mountains. Suisen no Ma opens onto a private garden and includes two open-air baths made of cypress and ceramics. Hisago no Ma features twin beds, two tatami rooms, and two private open-air baths. If you want to enjoy the outdoors, Ume no Ma and Nanten no Ma are located on the top floor and provide panoramic views of the changing seasons.
Standard rooms, like Sakura no Ma or Take no Ma, vary in layout and décor. Each one reflects the spirit of Japanese architecture and offers a peaceful escape, even for shorter stays. All rooms come equipped with air conditioning, TV, a washlet toilet, air purifier, and Wi-Fi. Amenities include yukata, towels, toothbrush sets, drawstring bags, and tabi socks.
Dining
Enjoy kaiseki meals that highlight the rich flavors of the San’in region. The chef selects seasonal ingredients and builds each course to reflect the season’s rhythm and the area’s local bounty. Tottori Wagyu beef, Nodoguro (blackthroat seaperch), and abalone often appear in premium courses, while standard menus showcase fresh vegetables, seafood, and regional specialties.
If you stay for multiple nights, you can request a different hot pot for dinner each evening, such as sukiyaki, shabu-shabu, or the Kinkaku Nabe. These come with sashimi, vegetables, rice, pickles, and dessert.
For breakfast, start your day with hearty dishes like fluffy soup rolls made with Tenmi eggs, grilled fish, miso soup, and fresh tofu. You can choose your breakfast time: 7:30, 8:00, or 8:30.
Let the ryokan know about dietary preferences or allergies in advance. You’ll need to book meals at least two days before your arrival.
Onsen and Wellness
Ryokan Ohashi draws water from five different hot spring sources, three of which are natural artesian springs. These waters carry radon and thorium, giving them unique healing properties. The thorium spring, known as Gankutsu no Yu, once earned recognition for having the highest thorium concentration in the world.
Gankutsu no Yu is a rustic bath set among natural rocks, allowing hot spring water to bubble up directly through the ground. You can bathe in different zones—some with lower radon, others with high thorium. The temperature and mineral content vary naturally, giving each bath a distinct feel.
Seseragi no Yu, an open-air bath beside the river, lets you soak while listening to flowing water. Although the open-air section is temporarily closed, you can still enjoy the cypress and indoor baths at that location.
Bathing hours alternate between men and women, so check the posted times before you visit. Footing can be uneven due to the natural rock setting, especially at night.
Guests with Tattoos
Ryokan Ohashi does not have a stated tattoo policy, but since many baths are private or rotate use, you should be able to enjoy the hot springs without issue. To be certain, confirm in advance if you’re concerned about access.
