Overview
Stay at Takayama Green Hotel in the centre of Hida Takayama, around six minutes on foot from JR Takayama Station. With 238 rooms across three accommodation wings, two natural hot spring areas, several dining choices, and one of the largest souvenir centres in the region, you can enjoy a complete stay without losing easy access to the city.
The location works well for exploring Takayama’s preserved streets, morning markets, sake breweries, Takayama Jinya, and Hida Folk Village. A complimentary shuttle also connects the property with JR Takayama Station throughout the day.
After sightseeing, you can return for Hida beef, seasonal Japanese cooking, buffet dining, or Chinese cuisine. Two separate bathing areas let you choose between garden views, open-air baths, saunas, and a high-concentration carbonated bath.
Accommodation
Choose between Orinkaku, Tenryokaku, and the Main Building. Together, the three wings provide Japanese rooms with futons, Western rooms with beds, Japanese-Western layouts, accessible accommodation, suites, and rooms with private open-air baths.
Orinkaku has a contemporary design with spacious rooms and wide windows. The 33-square-metre Comfort Double includes a 180-centimetre-wide bed, while the Comfort Twin has two beds and a sofa that can become an additional bed.
The 48-square-metre Premier Twin combines two double-width beds with a raised tatami area. South-facing rooms look across the satoyama landscape surrounding Takayama. The Universal Design Premier Twin has a step-free layout, handrails, high-contrast markings, and an electric reclining bed to support easier movement.
For more space, the Premier Japanese-Western Room provides 66 square metres, two beds, and a raised tatami area where futons can be prepared. The 80-square-metre Premier Suite sits on an east or west corner, with broad windows and separate Japanese and Western living spaces.
Tenryokaku places more emphasis on Hida craftsmanship. The 28-square-metre Standard Twin includes Hida furniture and shoji screens instead of curtains, bringing local character into a practical Western room.
The Deluxe Japanese Room provides 55 square metres and a 12.5-tatami layout. Wide windows look toward Takayama or the Japanese garden. The Deluxe Japanese-Western Room also measures 55 square metres and combines twin beds with an eight-tatami area furnished with pieces made in Hida. Sliding screens let you separate the sleeping and sitting areas.
In the Main Building, the Standard Japanese Room gives you a straightforward tatami layout with futon bedding. The top-floor Deluxe Twin provides two beds and elevated views from the ninth floor.
Selected Main Building rooms include private open-air baths. You can choose a Western twin, a Japanese room inspired by Takayama’s wooden merchant houses, or a 72-square-metre Japanese-Western room with twin beds, tatami, and Hida furniture.
The 85-square-metre Royal Suite includes twin beds, a European-style dining kitchen, and a private open-air bath facing the Northern Japanese Alps when the weather is clear. The private baths in all accommodation rooms use regular heated water rather than natural hot spring water.
Room amenities differ slightly by category, but you can expect heating and air conditioning, a television, refrigerator, tea-making facilities, towels, toiletries, samue loungewear, tabi socks, slippers, and a bag for carrying items to the public baths. Free Wi-Fi is available in every room.
Dining
Dining at Takayama Green Hotel introduces you to Hida beef, mountain produce, regional dishes, and seafood delivered from the Sea of Japan. Your restaurant depends on your selected plan, although you can also reserve additional meals during your stay.
At Japanese Restaurant Ryokutei, you dine beside a garden that changes with the seasons. Kaiseki meals combine Hida beef, local vegetables, carefully prepared seafood, and traditional Japanese presentation. One of the regional dishes pairs Hida beef with hōba miso, cooked on a magnolia leaf.
Dining Marché Green Court serves a Japanese, Western, and Chinese buffet based on local ingredients. Live cooking stations bring freshly prepared dishes to the dining room, with choices that may include roasted Hida beef and pork, steak, seafood, salads, hot dishes, and desserts.
Izakaya Dining & Bar Shirakawago recreates the atmosphere of a traditional gassho-style farmhouse, with an irori hearth at its centre. You can order charcoal-grilled Hida beef and local favourites such as Takayama ramen, grilled hōba miso, and tsukemono steak, a dish of pickles cooked with egg. The restaurant remains open later than the main dinner venues, making it useful when you prefer a less formal evening meal.
At Teppanyaki Yamanami, you watch Hida beef, Ise lobster, seasonal seafood, and vegetables cook directly in front of you. Advance reservations are required.
Chinese Restaurant Tenkyoro combines Chinese cooking with ingredients from Hida. The menu changes through the year and includes both lunch and dinner service on selected days.
Lounge Kinoka looks across the Japanese garden and serves coffee, alcoholic drinks, cakes, and seasonal parfaits. Weekend evening piano performances add music to the garden setting. Beside the lounge, Pâtisserie Bel Ange prepares cakes and sweets with seasonal fruit from the surrounding region.
For a drink later in the evening, the top-floor Sky Bar serves local sake, local beer, and original cocktails with night views across Takayama.
Breakfast is normally available from 7:00 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. The format and restaurant depend on your accommodation plan. Meals are served in the dining venues rather than inside your room.
When you have food allergies, follow a vegetarian diet, or do not eat beef, provide the details at least one week before arrival. Adjustments depend on the restaurant, menu, and preparation environment.
Onsen and Wellness
Takayama Green Hotel has two natural hot spring areas: Honjin Daiyokuden on the first floor of Tenryokaku and Tenryo-no-Yu Fuga in the basement of the Main Building.
The baths receive water from the Tenryo-no-Yu source. This sodium chloride and bicarbonate spring is hypotonic, weakly alkaline, and naturally low in temperature. The water has a pH of 8.1 and is often called a beauty spring because of its smooth feel against the skin.
The source temperature is approximately 32.5°C, so the water is heated to a comfortable bathing temperature. Circulation and filtration help maintain cleanliness and warmth.
Traditional bathing indications include fatigue, sensitivity to cold, neuralgia, muscle and joint discomfort, stiff shoulders, bruises, sprains, long-term digestive concerns, and recovery after illness.
Honjin Daiyokuden has a large indoor bath with full-height windows facing a Japanese garden. Cherry blossoms, summer leaves, autumn colours, and winter snow change the view throughout the year.
Outside, you can move between a hinoki cypress bath and a natural rock bath. The cypress bath becomes a jet bath when you press the control button, while lighting around the rock bath creates a different atmosphere in the evening.
Separate dry saunas are available in the men’s and women’s bathing areas. The sauna operates from 3:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. There is no cold-water bath, but a high-volume cooling shower is provided.
Tenryo-no-Yu Fuga reopened after renovation in February 2023. It has an indoor bath and two open-air baths, including a high-concentration carbonated bath. The carbon dioxide bubbles support circulation while you soak at a gentler temperature.
Both hot spring areas are normally open from 3:00 p.m. to 1:00 a.m. and again from 5:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. Shampoo, conditioner, body wash, skincare products, shower chairs, and hair dryers are provided. Honjin Daiyokuden has ReFa hair dryers, while Fuga has Dyson hair dryers.
There is no reservable private onsen. Rooms with private open-air baths use regular heated water and do not receive water from the Tenryo-no-Yu source.
Guests with Tattoos
You can use the shared hot spring baths when every tattoo is completely covered with a suitable sticker or another secure covering. Tattoos must remain hidden throughout your time in the bathing area.
When a tattoo cannot be fully covered, you cannot use Honjin Daiyokuden or Tenryo-no-Yu Fuga. There is no private onsen available as an alternative.
Selected rooms include private open-air baths that you can use regardless of tattoos. These baths provide privacy but contain regular heated water rather than natural hot spring water.
Facilities
Hida Bussankan brings together more than 7,000 foods, drinks, crafts, and souvenirs from Takayama and the wider Hida region. You can browse Hida sashiko textiles, sarubobo dolls, local sake, Hida beef products, sweets, and regional pantry items.
The centre also gives you the chance to make your own souvenir. You can create a sarubobo doll with guidance from a local craftsperson, bake senbei rice crackers, or assemble a hanging tsurushi-bina decoration. These experiences are available during set hours and do not normally require an advance reservation.
Lounge Kinoka and Pâtisserie Bel Ange provide garden-facing spaces for coffee, seasonal desserts, cakes, and afternoon tea. The top-floor Sky Bar gives you another place to sit in the evening, with local drinks and views across the city.
A Japanese garden sits within the property grounds and is open for walks outside the winter season. The building also contains a spacious lobby, karaoke rooms, meeting rooms, and 21 banquet spaces that can accommodate small gatherings or events of several hundred people.
A complimentary fitness gym is open during the day and evening. You need to bring your own exercise clothes and indoor athletic shoes and complete a short application at reception before use.
Bicycles are available for exploring Takayama from spring until snowfall. You can arrange one at reception without an advance reservation, subject to availability and weather conditions.
A 24-hour self-service laundry is located in the basement of the Main Building. Laundry service is also available for longer stays on selected days.
Free Wi-Fi is available in the rooms and shared areas. Indoor areas are non-smoking, with designated smoking booths provided. Wheelchairs and baby strollers can be borrowed, subject to availability.
The on-site parking area holds up to 250 cars and does not require a reservation. Parking is chargeable during an overnight stay. Two standard electric-vehicle charging points are also available.
Activities
Walk from the hotel to Takayama’s preserved old town, where wooden merchant houses, small shops, cafés, and sake breweries line the streets. The Miyagawa and Jinya-mae morning markets give you the chance to browse local produce, pickles, flowers, snacks, and handmade items.
Takayama Jinya introduces you to the city’s history as an administrative centre during the Edo period. Nearby, the red Nakabashi Bridge crosses the Miyagawa River and becomes one of the city’s best-known scenes during cherry blossom season and the Takayama Festival.
Hida Folk Village brings together traditional farmhouses from across the region, including steep-roofed gassho-style buildings. Inside the houses, you can learn about mountain life, local tools, crafts, and the ways families adapted to heavy winter snow.
You can also remain within the property for a craft experience at Hida Bussankan, an afternoon dessert beside the garden, a workout in the fitness gym, or another soak in one of the two hot spring areas.
Rental bicycles make it easier to move between the station, old town, morning markets, and museums outside winter. The free station shuttle provides another convenient option when you prefer not to walk.
For a longer day trip, Shirakawa-go is around 50 minutes away by road under normal conditions. The hotel also works as a base for visiting the Northern Japanese Alps, Okuhida, and the wider Hida region.
Additional Features
A complimentary shuttle runs between the hotel and the west exit of JR Takayama Station according to a fixed timetable. You do not need to reserve a seat.
You can also walk from the station in around six minutes. The property is approximately ten minutes by car from Takayama Interchange.
Check-in and check-out times depend on your room location. Orinkaku and selected premium rooms normally allow check-in from 2:00 p.m. and check-out by 11:00 a.m. Tenryokaku normally has check-in from 3:00 p.m. and check-out by 11:00 a.m., while most Main Building rooms have check-in from 3:00 p.m. and check-out by 10:00 a.m.
