Overview
Fujiiso places you high above Matsukawa Valley in Yamada Onsen, Takayama Village, Nagano. Mountains rise on three sides, and the ravine scenery follows you through the ryokan, from your room to the lounge and hot spring baths. In spring you can enjoy mountain cherry blossoms and fresh green leaves; in autumn, the valley turns bright with color; in winter, snow softens the whole view.
You stay in a traditional Shinshu ryokan with Sukiya-style design, warm wood, quiet spaces, and a close connection to the valley outside. Fujiiso has also welcomed literary figures such as Mori Ogai, Yosano Tekkan and Akiko, Kikuchi Kan, and Aizu Yaichi since the Edo period, giving the inn a strong sense of cultural history.
Accommodation
All rooms face the ravine, so you can enjoy the changing Matsukawa Gorge scenery from your own space. The rooms use traditional Sukiya-style design and low-rise architecture, with a calm layout that often includes a main room, an adjacent room, and an inner room.
For a special stay, choose Suite Room Fuji, a 158㎡ suite with a private open-air granite stone bath. You can soak while looking out over the gorge, then relax in the living room, twin bedroom, spacious tatami room, or private garden.
Suite Room Yamazakura offers 110㎡ of space with a private open-air hinoki cypress bath. The bath connects directly to the terrace, with gorge views from the tub and a private garden veranda for slow, quiet moments outdoors.
You can also choose annex Japanese-Western rooms with tatami space and Western-style beds. One room includes a moon-viewing terrace, where you can enjoy the night sky, trees, and the sound of the valley river. Another annex room places you close to the forest and gorge, with a more enclosed, peaceful atmosphere.
The Japanese-style room with balcony gives you a classic ryokan stay with a terrace overlooking Matsukawa Gorge. The twin room with balcony offers Western-style bedding and seasonal valley views from its moon-viewing terrace.
Dining
Dinner at Fujiiso focuses on fresh local ingredients and regional cooking traditions. You can expect seasonal Shinshu flavors prepared with care, with dishes that reflect the mountains, fields, rivers, and changing calendar of Nagano.
Autumn dining highlights the Chōyō no Sekku, or Chrysanthemum Festival, with mountain ingredients such as mushrooms, chestnuts, ginkgo nuts, akebi, and horse chestnuts. The meal may also feature newly harvested rice, buckwheat, beans, sesame, leafy greens, root vegetables, apples, persimmons, grapes, and local river fish such as iwana, yamame, Shinshu salmon, and yukimasu.
Meals are served on the 4th floor, not in your room. You dine in a private dining room or a quiet space divided by bamboo blinds, with soft lighting and a relaxed pace. Dinner runs from 5:45 PM to 9:00 PM, with the last meal start at 7:00 PM. Breakfast is served from 8:00 AM to 9:30 AM and features seasonal local vegetables prepared with a focus on health and gentle flavors.
Onsen and Wellness
Fujiiso’s hot spring belongs to Yamada Onsen, a historic source discovered during the Sengoku period and opened as a hot spring area in 1798. The spring quality is a sulfur-containing sodium and calcium chloride spring, known for warmth that stays with you after bathing.
The indoor baths look out toward Matsukawa Gorge. The men’s bath uses hinoki cypress, while the women’s bath uses granite stone, creating a clean, refined bathing atmosphere. The wooden bath is renewed with fresh Kiso hinoki every three years.
The open-air baths bring you close to the valley air. Sliding doors connect the indoor and outdoor spaces, and the covered outdoor bath lets you soak in rain, snow, late-night stillness, or early morning light.
You can also visit Ōyu, the historic public bathhouse of Yamada Onsen, free of charge during your stay. Its natural hot spring water flows directly from the source, with both a hot bath and a milder bath.
Guests with Tattoos
For the most comfortable bathing experience, book Suite Room Fuji or Suite Room Yamazakura, as both include a private in-room onsen bath. The public bath cannot be reserved for private use.
Facilities
Fujiiso offers a superb view lounge with a 27-meter counter facing Matsukawa Gorge. You can sit with a wide view of the valley below and enjoy a slow pause between your room, bath, and meals.
You can also use the conversation room, where books, selected music, and a premium audio system create a quiet place to read or talk. The travel information lounge sits beside the gift shop, making it easy to check local sightseeing ideas and choose souvenirs.
The ryokan also has a banquet hall for celebrations, memorial services, and larger gatherings. Wi-Fi is available, the entire building is non-smoking, and outdoor smoking areas are provided. Free parking is available for 18 cars, with no reservation or extra fee required.
Activities
From Fujiiso, you can visit Zenkoji Temple, one of Nagano’s most important temples, with a history of about 1,400 years. You can travel there directly by taxi in about 50 minutes, or combine taxi, train, and bus in about 70 minutes.
You can also visit Jigokudani Monkey Park, known for wild Japanese macaques, especially in winter when the snow monkeys are often seen around the hot spring area. Fujiiso lists access by taxi, or by a combination of bus and train through Suzaka Station and Yudanaka Station.
