Overview
At Hotel Ambia Shofukaku, you stand face-to-face with one of Japan’s most breathtaking views: Mount Fuji rising beyond the vast Suruga Bay. Located on the coast of Yaizu in Shizuoka Prefecture, this ryokan offers a panoramic ocean view from every room, with nothing obstructing the horizon. Wake up to the rising sun over the sea, watch fishing boats light up the evening waters, and relax into the rhythm of the coast. From its elevated location 80 meters above sea level, Shofukaku invites you to slow down and immerse yourself in an unforgettable experience.
Accommodation
Every room at Shofukaku looks out over the Pacific. Whether you choose a spacious 12.5-tatami Japanese-style room or a twin Western-style layout with reclining beds, the view always takes center stage. Open the window and let the sea breeze carry the sound of waves into your room.
You can also book a Premium Twin room, recently renovated in 2024, perfect for up to three people. Or choose one of the Special Rooms: the 96-square-meter Royal Suite or the 15-tatami Aoi-no-ma, both with large living spaces and sweeping views.
If you’re traveling with children, the ryokan provides amenities like slippers, yukata, and baby items. And if you need additional comfort, ask the front desk for humidifiers, irons, or air purifiers. Every room includes Wi-Fi, private toilets, and access to rental items like board games or Go sets.
Dining
Your stay includes access to one of the ryokan’s most prized experiences: its local seafood-focused meals. Shofukaku sources fresh ingredients from the nearby Suruga Bay and serves seasonal Japanese cuisine.
For breakfast, head to the buffet with about 40 dishes including shirasu (whitebait), fried local “hanpen,” and house-made pickles. For lunch or dinner, you can book meal plans that include dishes like sushi kaiseki in a private dining room, or enjoy the Misaki Bento alongside a soak in the hot springs.
If you’re looking to upgrade your meal, try the “maguro daimyōzukuri”—a dramatic whole tuna carving show available for groups with advance reservation. You can also order a sashimi platter, grilled tuna jaw, or other delicacies like abalone sashimi, salt-grilled local fish, or tiger prawn skewers. The menu caters to both food lovers and those seeking healthy or lightly seasoned options.
Onsen and Wellness
High above the sea, the open-air baths let you soak with views of Mount Fuji and the Izu Peninsula. The ryokan offers separate men’s and women’s onsen areas, including indoor panoramic baths and two outdoor baths: “Shibuki-no-Yu” for men and “Nagisa-no-Yu” for women.
Shofukaku uses natural hot spring water drawn from a depth of 1,500 meters. This mildly alkaline sodium-calcium chloride spring helps ease muscle pain, nerve pain, fatigue, and more. The baths operate daily from early morning to late at night. If you visit during the evening, you’ll see the fishing lights flicker across the bay. At dawn, catch the glow of the sunrise spilling over the waves.
You’ll also find dry and mist saunas, cold baths, and baby bathtubs and chairs. Toiletries include shampoo, conditioner, lotions, and cleansers, with additional grooming products for both men and women.
Guests with Tattoos
If you have tattoos, you can use the day-use baths or join meal plans that include bathing access. Private use or rental options are not specified, so it’s best to check with the front desk if you have concerns.
Facilities
The ryokan’s location gives you access to both indoor comforts and wide-open views. Inside, you’ll find banquet halls, private dining rooms, lounges, and barrier-free features. The rooms are non-smoking, and there are universal twin rooms available with large bathrooms and wide doorways for ease of movement.
Free Wi-Fi is available throughout the building, and the ryokan includes rental items like children’s booster seats, diaper bins, and bottle sterilizers. You’ll also find safety handles in the baths and restrooms, making it easy for all ages to move around the facility.
Activities
Plan your trip around seasonal events like the summer Beer Festival or join one of the on-site meals with fresh sushi and grilled fish. During your stay, you can explore Yaizu’s nearby attractions, including local fish markets, scenic coastal roads, and Mount Fuji’s surrounding viewpoints.
The ryokan also offers day-use plans that combine lunch or afternoon tea with bathing, making it easy to visit even if you’re not staying overnight.
