Overview

At Hotel Ofutei, you stay directly beside the calm waters of Tomonoura, with the Seto Inland Sea, passing boats, and small islands stretching beyond the windows. Morning light reflects across the bay, while the evening brings soft colours, fishing lights, and moonlit water.

Tomonoura grew as an important port where ships once waited for favourable tides. Its preserved streets, stone steps, temples, merchant houses, and historic harbour still carry the atmosphere of the Edo period. After exploring the town, you can return to sea-facing hot spring baths, seasonal Setouchi cuisine, and a room designed around the coastal view.

Hotel Ofutei gives you several ways to experience the sea. You can watch the harbour from the lobby, dine beside wide windows, relax on an outdoor terrace, or soak above the water in a rooftop bath. The setting encourages you to leave your usual pace behind and enjoy Tomonoura one changing view at a time.

Accommodation

You can choose from spacious suites, sea-facing twin rooms, traditional Japanese rooms, and special rooms with private open-air hot spring baths. Most room categories face the Seto Inland Sea or Tomonoura Harbour, while selected rooms look toward the town and surrounding hills.

The 81-square-metre Premium Suite includes a Japanese-style living area, a separate bedroom, and a private JAXSON Jacuzzi beside broad windows overlooking the sea. A Sealy mattress, 4K television, carefully selected furniture, and the open layout create a comfortable setting for a longer stay. The Jacuzzi uses heated water rather than natural hot spring water.

The 86-square-metre Harborside Suite gives you two bedrooms with four semi-double beds, making it one of the most spacious choices. A long counter beside the windows faces the harbour, providing a relaxing place to sit with a drink while watching boats move across the water. Simmons mattresses, a smart television, and a soundbar complete the room.

The 72-square-metre Harborside Semi-Suite separates the living room, bedroom, and dining space. Its private view bath faces the sea and harbour, while selected plans allow you to enjoy dinner inside your room. The bath uses heated water rather than natural spring water.

The 63-square-metre In-Room Dining Suite is designed around private dining. It includes a dining area, a terrace-style living space, a bedroom, and a granite-look jet bath. This room faces the town and mountains rather than the sea, giving you a different side of Tomonoura. Dinner is served in your room, allowing you to enjoy each course without leaving your private space. The jet bath does not use hot spring water.

YOI and SHIRO are Ocean Executive Rooms introduced in February 2026. Located on the fifth floor, each room combines twin beds, tatami flooring, a living area, and a semi-open bath beside a large window. YOI measures 57 square metres, while SHIRO measures 58 square metres. You can open the window area to bring in the sea breeze and watch the light change across the islands. Wide entrances and minimal steps create an easier layout for wheelchair use. The semi-open baths use heated water rather than natural hot spring water.

The top-floor Premium Twin measures 38 square metres and combines raised Japanese-style beds with natural wood tones and an open sea view. The 42-square-metre Premium Corner Twin provides a broader panorama from its corner position. Both room types include Sealy mattresses and 4K televisions.

Suihanrou is a special third-floor area with three rooms featuring private open-air hot spring baths. Room 301 measures almost 102 square metres and includes a 10-tatami sitting area, a twin bedroom, a living room, and a broad terrace with a private hinoki bath. A portable slope can be added to support wheelchair access.

Room 302 measures around 52 square metres and combines bamboo flooring, twin beds, and a private ceramic open-air bath. Room 303 offers a similar amount of space with tatami, twin beds, a living area, and a private open-air bath. In all three Suihanrou rooms, natural hot spring water remains available in the private bath throughout your stay.

Standard Japanese rooms measure around 38 square metres and face the sea through a wide picture window. Tatami flooring and futon bedding give you a traditional ryokan experience. Standard Twin rooms measure around 21 square metres and face the town or mountains, providing a simpler choice with two Western beds.

Your room includes a television, refrigerator, safe, yukata, towels, slippers, hairdryer, toiletries, and a toilet with bidet functions. Free Wi-Fi is available, and all rooms are non-smoking.

Dining

Your meals highlight the seafood, vegetables, citrus fruit, rice, and beef of the Setouchi region. Dinner is prepared as seasonal Japanese kaiseki, with dishes changing to suit the ingredients available at that time of year.

Fresh fish from the Seto Inland Sea plays a central role. Depending on the season, your meal may include sea bream, octopus, shellfish, squid, or other local catches. Sashimi is accompanied by house pairings such as Tosa soy sauce, herb oil, and Setouchi seaweed salt. The seaweed salt works especially well with sea bream, while the herb oil brings out the flavour of squid and shellfish.

Selected courses also feature Togeshita beef, a Hiroshima brand beef valued for its tender texture and balanced richness. Local vegetables and seasonal produce add colour and freshness to each course.

You can choose from standard seasonal kaiseki, upgraded courses with premium ingredients, smaller-portion gourmet meals, and a carefully prepared Takumi course. A vegan kaiseki option is also available with advance arrangements.

Private Dining Kairi includes an open kitchen and private or semi-private rooms. Dishes are finished close to your table and served while they are at their best. Dining Gen combines warm wood details with a relaxed Setouchi-inspired setting. Selected suite plans include in-room dining, while Harbor View Dining and Convention Hall Rashinban provides wide harbour views and a more open dining atmosphere.

Breakfast is normally served at Rashinban as a Japanese and Western buffet with around 50 dishes. You can prepare sea bream rice topped with marinated fish or add broth to create tai chazuke. Other local favourites may include Togeshita beef simmered in a sweet and savoury sauce, Shinjo miso soup, grilled fish, seasonal small dishes, salads, and vegetables from the region.

Rice from Jinsekikogen, bread, egg dishes, fruit, desserts, Setouchi lemon jelly, Ofutei milk pudding, Hassaku citrus juice, local milk, and the original Shiomatoko Blend coffee complete the morning selection. Breakfast may change to a Japanese set meal when fewer people are staying.

Dietary and allergy requests should be shared when you book. Adjustments depend on the ingredients and preparation methods used, especially when broths or extracts are involved.

Onsen and Wellness

Tomonoura Onsen is a natural radium hot spring classified as a simple weak radioactive cold mineral spring. The water is hypotonic and mildly alkaline, with a gentle feel that suits an unhurried soak.

The third-floor bathing area includes large indoor baths and sea-facing open-air baths. You can watch the morning sun rise over the Seto Inland Sea, see boats pass through the harbour, or bathe beneath the evening sky. The men’s and women’s sides switch the following morning, allowing you to experience both layouts during an overnight stay.

The third-floor baths are normally available from 05:00 to 09:30 and from 11:00 until midnight. Bathing hours may change when maintenance is required.

The sauna area was renewed in 2023. One side includes a löyly sauna heated to around 80°C, while the other includes a gentler steam sauna at around 50°C. Because the bathing areas switch in the morning, you can experience both sauna styles during your stay. There is no cold plunge pool.

Hoshi no Yu and Nami no Yu are rooftop observatory open-air baths reserved for overnight stays. With the sky above and the sea below, you can soak in the ocean breeze during the day or look for stars after dark. The two baths switch between men and women the following morning.

The rooftop observatory baths normally open from 14:00 to 23:00 and again from 06:00 to 09:30. They close from December through the end of February because of their exposed position. Rain, strong wind, cold waves, or other poor weather may also affect access.

Sansan and Toutou are reservation-only private open-air baths on the rooftop. Each gives you a personal bathing space with a direct view across the Seto Inland Sea. Sessions last 50 minutes and are available during selected afternoon, evening, and morning periods. These private baths follow the same winter and poor-weather closures as the rooftop observatory baths.

You can also walk for around five minutes to the sister property, Keishokan Sazanamitei, for a hot spring bath-hopping experience. Access is normally available during the afternoon and evening, allowing you to enjoy another bathing atmosphere during your stay.

Only the Suihanrou room category has private baths supplied with natural hot spring water. The Jacuzzi, jet bath, view bath, and semi-open baths in other room categories use heated water.

Guests with Tattoos

You cannot use the shared indoor and open-air hot spring baths if you have tattoos.

You can reserve the private rooftop baths Sansan or Toutou, or choose a Suihanrou room with its own open-air hot spring bath. Tattoos are also not permitted at the seasonal outdoor pool.

Facilities

The sea-facing lobby provides a broad view across Tomonoura Harbour and the islands of the Seto Inland Sea. Its windows create an almost panoramic outlook, giving you a comfortable place to sit while watching the changing water and sky.

The Sea Terrace and Harbor Terrace bring you closer to the coastal air. You can step outside, look across the boats and islands, and enjoy the atmosphere of the port without leaving the property.

With selected premium room categories, you can use the Premium Lounge for drinks, coffee, soft drinks, and light refreshments. Access depends on the room and accommodation plan you book.

Dining and event facilities include Private Dining Kairi, Dining Gen, Harbor View Dining and Convention Hall Rashinban, Banquet Hall Nanajima, and the smaller Nagisa and Asaka halls. These spaces support private meals, celebrations, meetings, and group events.

After bathing, you can relax in the rest area with massage chairs and drink vending machines. Seaside Salon Sarah provides body and facial treatments for deeper relaxation.

The shop carries Hotel Ofutei gifts, local food, sweets, crafts, and products from Hiroshima and the Setouchi region. A small outdoor children’s pool opens during the summer season.

Public areas have been designed to reduce steps where possible, and wheelchairs are available to borrow. Selected rooms also support easier wheelchair movement.

Activities

You can explore Tomonoura on foot from Hotel Ofutei. The town became a Japan Heritage site in 2018 and preserves the character of a historic port where ships waited for the changing tides.

The stone Joyato lighthouse remains one of Tomonoura’s best-known landmarks. Nearby, you can visit the Irohamaru Exhibition Hall, the historic Ota Residence, and Fukuzenji Temple’s Taichoro, where the windows frame a celebrated view across Bentenjima and Sensui Island.

You can board the Heisei Iroha Maru ferry for the short crossing to Sensui Island. The island offers coastal walking paths, rock formations, beaches, and open views across the Seto Inland Sea.

Water-based activities include stand-up paddleboarding, RIB boat tours, traditional wooden boat cruises, and local fishing experiences. You can also learn about Homeishu, Tomonoura’s historic medicinal liqueur, visit a local brewery, try a metal-forging experience, or cycle toward Onomichi and the Shimanami Kaido area.

Seasonal traditions add another layer to your visit. Sea bream net fishing takes place in spring, the dramatic Otebi fire festival is held in summer, and the town displays traditional dolls during the early spring Hina festival.

Additional Features

All rooms are non-smoking, with a designated smoking space available on the first floor. Free Wi-Fi is available throughout the property, and complimentary parking is provided.

A complimentary shuttle operates between JR Fukuyama Station and Hotel Ofutei with advance reservations. The journey normally takes around 30 minutes, depending on traffic.

Standard rooms normally have check-in from 15:00 and check-out at 10:00. Premium suites, selected harbourside suites, premium-floor rooms, Ocean Executive Rooms, and Suihanrou rooms include check-in from 14:00 and check-out at 11:00.
