Overview

Kisui no Yado Monya is a ryokan in Shirahama, on the southern tip of the Boso Peninsula in Minamiboso, Chiba. It faces the Pacific Ocean with Nojimazaki Lighthouse within walking distance, and on clear days you can make out Izu Oshima in the distance. The name Kisui no Yado roughly translates as “inn at the water’s edge,” and that framing is accurate: the ocean is right in front of you, the sound of waves carries through the building, and the setting shapes everything from how meals are planned to how rooms are designed.

This is a ryokan known specifically for its food. The kaiseki menu changes every two months, built around the seasonal seafood and produce of Minamiboso, and dining here is one of the central reasons people return. It also has a strong reputation for family hospitality, including dedicated services for parents with infants and expectant mothers.

Reaching the ryokan by car takes about 30 minutes from the Tomiura Interchange at the end of the Tateyama Expressway. By public transport, you can take the Boso Nanohana-go highway bus from Tokyo Station or Shinjuku to Tateyama Station in about two hours, then connect to a JR bus to Awa Shirahama (40 minutes) or take a taxi (about 25 minutes). A free shuttle service is available from the station. There are 20 parking spaces on site at no charge.

Please note there are no convenience stores within easy walking distance of the ryokan, so coming by car is recommended if you plan to explore the area independently.

Accommodation

Monya offers six room types across different layouts and settings, ranging from standard rooms to detached rooms with private open-air onsen baths. The detached rooms are the most elevated option: one has 10 tatami mats with its own open-air bath, while a corner detached room with 12.5 tatami mats offers a larger and more secluded space. The suite, known as the Monyo Suite, is a Japanese-Western room that can accommodate up to five people and is the most spacious option. The Sea and Sky Twin is a 24 square metre twin room designed with particular thoughtfulness, including a reclining chair with cushions and an ottoman for additional comfort.

All rooms open to the scenery of South Boso, and most have views of the ocean and the lighthouse. The building uses stairs rather than an elevator, so movement between floors is on foot.

Dining

Monya’s kitchen is the heart of the ryokan. Dinner is a full kaiseki course that changes every two months, built around the seafood, produce, and local ingredients of Minamiboso. The approach is deliberately different from a buffet or standard ryokan set menu: each course is composed and presented with intention, using whatever is at its best in that particular season. Sourcing focuses on local ingredients, and the style is described as a little different from conventional ryokan cuisine, with a focus on freshness and character.

Two dining areas keep the atmosphere flexible. Tsuki no Za is a private-style dining room reserved for adults. Wafu Za is the Japanese-style dining area for families with children. Meals are served in these dedicated spaces rather than in your room, giving you a change of setting between bathing and eating.

Breakfast is a Japanese-style spread that now includes Tai Chazuke as a signature dish: fresh sea bream served over rice with a special sesame sauce and a rich dashi broth. During peak season, breakfast runs in two seatings at 7:30 and 8:45, and you can indicate your preference on arrival.

Onsen and Wellness

Monya has two communal baths with different characters, which alternate between men and women depending on the time of day so you can experience both during your stay. The bathing hours run from 4:00 PM to 11:00 PM.

For private bathing, there are two options. A free family bath called Nagomi no Yu is available without reservation. A second private bath requires prior reservation and carries a separate charge. The detached room types also include their own private open-air baths, giving you completely independent bathing in your own space.

A spa facility is also on site, offering aromatherapy treatments including maternity aromatherapy for expectant mothers. Reservations are required for spa services.

Guests with Tattoos

Because you can soak in a private bath inside your room, you will be able to enjoy the onsen regardless of tattoos.

Facilities

The ryokan keeps its facilities focused and well maintained. The two communal baths with rotating male and female access, two private baths, and a spa are the main wellness offerings. Meals are served in the two dedicated dining areas, Tsuki no Za and Wafu Za. A free shuttle service connects to the nearest station. Free Wi-Fi is available throughout. Free parking for 20 cars is on site. The building has no elevator, so all movement between floors is by stairs.

Activities

Nojimazaki Lighthouse is within walking distance from the ryokan and marks the southernmost point of the Boso Peninsula. The surrounding coastline offers open walks with Pacific views. Shirahama Flower Park is a well-known attraction in the area, particularly in spring when the fields are in full colour. The coastal road, Route 410, runs close to the ryokan and is popular for scenic drives.

The area around Shirahama is known for its mild year-round climate, which makes it pleasant to explore in most seasons. Fishing villages, quiet beaches, and the coastal scenery of the southern Boso tip give you a sense of how this part of Chiba has looked and functioned for generations.
