Overview

Yamanaka Onsen Ohanami Kyubei sits above the Kakusenkei Gorge in Yamanaka Onsen, Kaga, Ishikawa Prefecture, with the gorge carved by the Daishoji River just one minute’s walk from the building. Yamanaka Onsen has been flowing for over 1,300 years and is one of the Kaga Onsen group, four hot spring towns in the southern Ishikawa region that together form one of the most historically significant hot spring areas in the Hokuriku region. The haiku master Matsuo Basho visited Yamanaka Onsen in the late 17th century and praised its waters above all others he had encountered.

The ryokan calls itself a Ryokan Cafe and the description is accurate in spirit: it runs on a philosophy of open access and personal choice. You move freely through the building, try things at your own pace, and construct your stay around your mood rather than a rigid programme. The dining was entirely renewed in July 2024, and the ryokan has won the Rakuten Travel Award seven years running. From JR Kaga Onsen Station, a free shuttle runs to the ryokan in about 25 minutes, with departures at 2:00 PM, 3:00 PM, 4:00 PM, and 5:00 PM. Advance reservation for the shuttle is required. By car, Komatsu Airport is about 30 minutes away.

Accommodation

The ryokan has 49 rooms, every one of them facing the Daishoji River and the gorge below. Room types cover standard Japanese-style rooms, Japanese-Western rooms, and rooms with private open-air baths.

Standard Japanese-style rooms use tatami flooring with futon bedding and look directly out over the gorge. In summer, fireflies appear in the valley at night. In winter, snow settles over the rock formations and the scene turns quietly monochrome. Japanese-Western rooms combine a tatami area with beds, using either bed frames or Simmons mattresses laid on the floor, and work well for couples, families, or small groups who want flexibility in how they use the space. Rooms with private open-air baths are over 50 square metres, use Simmons beds, and give you direct access to Yamanaka Onsen water from your own outdoor bath at any hour.

All rooms include air conditioning, a flat-screen TV, a refrigerator, an electric kettle, a private bathroom with a deep-soaking tub, a washlet toilet, a hair dryer, free toiletries, a safe, and yukata. A free amenity bar lets you choose items such as toothbrushes, hair ties, and body towels according to your needs rather than receiving a fixed set.

Check-in is from 3:00 PM. Check-out is by 11:00 AM. If you plan to have dinner, you must check in by 6:30 PM. Quiet hours run from 9:00 PM to 7:00 AM.

Onsen and Wellness

Yamanaka Onsen’s water has been in continuous use for over 1,300 years. The large indoor communal bath is open from 5:30 AM to 11:30 PM and provides separate men’s and women’s areas with all the standard bathing amenities. The water is gentle on the skin and retains heat well.

Three private open-air baths overlooking the gorge are free for all staying guests and can be reserved from the day of arrival on a first-come, first-served basis. Advance reservations are not accepted. Each bath is different in size and character: one suits families or groups, one is open and balanced for two or more people, and the smallest is suited to a quiet soak for two. All three look out directly over the Daishoji River and the forested walls of the Kakusenkei Gorge.

For a deeper and more controlled relaxation experience, the private sauna WABISABI can be reserved separately. This is a fully private space where you control the aroma, music, and lighting. It includes a shower room and lets you set the entire environment to your preference.

Guests with tattoos

Guests with tattoos are not permitted to use the shared bathing areas or other shared facilities. The three reservable private open-air baths and the WABISABI private sauna are available as alternatives and give you complete privacy. Contact the ryokan before your visit to confirm which bathing options are available to you and how to reserve them.

Facilities

The lobby is where the hands-on experience programme runs during set hours each afternoon. You can whisk your own matcha, grill your own dango (rice dumplings) and senbei (rice crackers) over a flame, taste a selection of local sake from Ishikawa, and browse a snack corner filled with nostalgic Japanese treats. All of these are free and included in your stay.

Club Yuzaya is the main lounge area, with an extensive manga and magazine collection, board games, table tennis, hammocks, and relaxed seating. It stays open before and after dinner and is one of the most used spaces in the building. A terrace café overlooks the gorge and works well for tea or coffee after a bath, whatever the season. A gallery on site shows local crafts and introduces the cultural context of the Kaga region.

Free parking accommodates up to 80 vehicles including large cars. Major credit cards are accepted. Free Wi-Fi runs throughout the building.

Activities

The Kakusenkei Gorge walking path begins one minute from the ryokan and follows the Daishoji River through the valley. The path passes Korogi Bridge, a wooden footbridge over the river that is one of the most photographed spots in Yamanaka Onsen, and continues along a route that Matsuo Basho himself walked. The Yuge Kaido pedestrian street nearby has local craft shops, cafes, and the Kiku no Yu public bathhouse, which is about 13 minutes on foot. The music box museum is also a short walk away.

Natadera Temple, a complex of ancient buildings set into a cliff face in the forest, is about 12 kilometres from the ryokan and one of the most dramatic temple sites in Ishikawa Prefecture. The Kutaniyaki Art Museum, dedicated to the bold, richly coloured ceramics that are one of Ishikawa’s most famous traditional crafts, is about 11 minutes by car. Kanazawa, the historic castle city and cultural centre of the Hokuriku region, is approximately 45 minutes away and makes an easy full-day excursion.
