Overview

Travel beyond central Nikko and settle into the forests of Okunikko at UNWIND HOTEL & BAR Okunikko. Opening on August 8, 2026 after a full renovation of the former Okunikko Konishi Hotel, this 46-room retreat brings together mid-century design, natural sulfur springs, fireside dining, and the mountain scenery of Nikko National Park.

The hotel stands at an elevation of around 1,500 metres in Yumoto Onsen. Lake Yunoko lies close by, while Senjogahara, Yudaki Falls, Lake Chuzenji, and the forests of Oku-Nikko give you plenty to explore in every season.

Inside, vintage-style furniture, warm wood, brick, soft lighting, and large windows create the feeling of a private forest lodge. You can spend the afternoon walking beside the lake, return for a source-fed onsen soak, and finish the evening with drinks beside the fireplace.

Accommodation

All 46 rooms measure 35 square metres and look toward the forests and natural scenery of Okunikko. You can choose a King Room, Twin Room, or Four-Bed Room, with each category offering the same generous floor space.

The King Room features one 240-centimetre-wide bed. A sofa, desk, and wood-lined study area give you comfortable places to read, enjoy coffee, or plan your next walk.

The Twin Room includes two 120-centimetre-wide semi-double beds and suits couples, friends, or family trips. The Four-Bed Room adds two upper bunk beds above two semi-double beds, creating a flexible layout for travelling together.

Custom Serta pocket-coil mattresses support a restful night after a day outdoors. Your room also includes a 50-inch smart television, sofa, desk, refrigerator with a freezer compartment, electric kettle, separate vanity, private toilet, and bathroom with a regular-water bathtub.

Complimentary mineral water and drip coffee are ready in your room. Toothbrushes, a hairdryer, towels, slippers, and bathing products are provided, while skincare products, razors, and cotton items are available from the amenity bar. Every room is non-smoking and has individual heating and air conditioning.

Dining

The main dining room opens toward the forest through wide windows. A central fireplace, timber ceiling, herringbone floor, and wine-red seating create an inviting place to begin and end your day.

Dinner follows the Forest Lodge Dining concept. Grilled dishes, roasts, soups, and comforting Western-style cooking capture the feeling of an evening meal in a mountain lodge. The relaxed service lets you enjoy the food without the formality of a traditional kaiseki dinner.

Breakfast is served as the Forest Morning Table. Warm soup, freshly baked bread, seasonal vegetables, and fruit give you a satisfying start before walking, sightseeing, or travelling through Oku-Nikko.

From 8:00 PM to 10:00 PM, the light-inclusive bar service offers selected drinks without an additional charge. You can stay at Bar IGNIS or take your drink into the lounge and spend the evening beside the fire.

The market carries light meals, snacks, ice cream, drinks, and frozen foods when you prefer something simple. This is especially useful because shops and evening restaurants are limited around Yumoto Onsen.

Onsen and Wellness

The shared bathhouse draws natural sulfur water from Okunikko Yumoto Onsen. The spring may appear milky white, pale blue, or emerald green as its minerals react with air, light, and changing natural conditions.

The hydrogen-sulfide-type simple sulfur spring flows into the baths without circulation or added disinfectant. In normal conditions, the water also receives no added water or extra heating. The temperature is controlled at around 42°C for comfortable bathing.

Separate bathing areas for men and women include a large indoor bath and an open-air rock bath. The outdoor bath uses rocks from Mount Nantai, with tall conifers rising beyond the bathing area. As you soak, you can look upward toward the trees and open mountain sky.

The baths open from 3:00 PM to midnight and again from 5:00 AM to 10:00 AM. Bring the towels from your room and remove jewellery before entering, as the strong sulfur water may discolour metal.

Facilities

The fireside lounge gives you a comfortable place to read, talk, or enjoy a drink after bathing. Vintage-inspired furniture and large forest-facing windows maintain the hotel’s mid-century lodge atmosphere throughout the day.

Bar IGNIS hosts the complimentary evening drink service, while the market provides snacks, drinks, frozen food, ice cream, and useful travel items. An amenity bar lets you select additional skincare and personal-care products during your stay.

Free Wi-Fi covers every room. A coin laundry is located on the second floor, and the hotel offers more than 100 rental items, including charging cables, extra blankets, beauty equipment, yoga mats, massage cushions, and games.

Mobile services allow you to complete advance check-in, request amenities, arrange rental items, communicate through chat, and place restaurant, bar, and shop charges onto your room. A designated smoking area is available on the second floor.

Activities

Walk to nearby Lake Yunoko for an easy morning or evening stroll beside the water. The lake is surrounded by mountains and forest, and the adjoining Yukawa River is closely connected with the history of fly fishing in Japan.

Follow the trail toward Yudaki Falls, where water from Lake Yunoko drops into the valley. From the waterfall, walking routes continue toward the boardwalks and open wetland scenery of Senjogahara.

Join a guided nature experience to discover seasonal plants, forest wildlife, lakes, and changing landscapes around Oku-Nikko. The route can reflect the weather and conditions during your stay, making it suitable even when you are visiting the area for the first time.

Farther down the mountain, Lake Chuzenji offers lakeside walks and access to Kegon Falls and Ryuzu Falls. You can also continue into central Nikko for Toshogu Shrine and the other UNESCO-listed temples and shrines.

Spring brings fresh forest growth, while summer offers cool highland air. Autumn fills the lakes and mountains with colour, and winter covers the area in deep snow.

Additional Features

Check-in begins at 3:00 PM, and check-out is by 11:00 AM. Day-use stays and day-use bathing are not available.

The hotel is around three minutes on foot from the Yumoto Onsen bus stop. The bus journey from Tobu-Nikko Station or JR Nikko Station normally takes around 80 to 90 minutes.

Free parking is available on the grounds, although spaces are limited. Winter roads can be snowy or icy, so snow tyres or tyre chains are important when you arrive by car. The Kinsei Road closes during winter, making the route through Nikko and Irohazaka the main approach.

Pets cannot stay at the hotel. With spacious forest-facing rooms, natural sulfur bathing, fireside dining, complimentary evening drinks, and Lake Yunoko close by, UNWIND HOTEL & BAR Okunikko gives you a stylish new base for experiencing the quieter side of Nikko.
