Overview
Step into the quiet elegance of Inn Matsushima, a traditional Japanese ryokan founded in 1874. With more than 130 years of history, this inn welcomes you with heartfelt hospitality and authentic kaiseki cuisine. Located in Matsushima, the property blends seasonal beauty, peaceful gardens, and the charm of Japanese tradition.
From the moment you arrive, you’ll feel at ease. A kimono-clad staff member greets you, shows you to your room, and ensures you’re comfortable throughout your stay. Whether you’re here for a restful solo retreat or a gathering with friends, this ryokan creates the perfect space to relax and experience Japan at your own pace.
Accommodation
Inn Matsushima offers traditional Japanese rooms that range from 6 to 18 tatami mats in size. Each room features tatami flooring, shoji paper screens, and a quiet atmosphere for your comfort. You’ll find:
- Yukata in large and medium sizes
- Bath towel and face towel
- Toothbrush set
- Futon bedding, mattress, sheets, and pillows
In the evening, you can lay out your futon on the tatami floor. During the day, the staff fluffs and airs the futon under the sun, preparing it for a clean and cozy night’s sleep. Every sheet and cover is freshly laundered to ensure your comfort.
Dining
Enjoy handmade Japanese meals prepared by a skilled chef at the on-site restaurant, Shoufuen. The chef selects the freshest ingredients daily to create beautiful, flavorful dishes rooted in traditional Japanese culinary art.
Dinner features a generous variety of dishes—sashimi, tempura, simmered and grilled items, steamed delicacies, rice, miso soup, and pickles—all presented with care. Breakfast is served with balance and attention to seasonal ingredients.
If you’re staying as part of a small group, the staff brings your meals directly to your room. For larger groups or banquets, meals take place in the main hall, where you can choose between chairs or sitting on tatami. During banquets, the table fills with seasonal dishes, including beautifully arranged sashimi and optional kaiseki courses.
The drink menu includes sake, shochu, beer, whiskey, and wine. If you wish to bring your own small amount of food or drink, you may do so in your room. However, outside items are not permitted in the banquet hall.
Onsen and Wellness
Relax in the ryokan’s large communal bath, which accommodates 7–8 people. The bath includes a bubble feature for added comfort. After your bath, change into your yukata and stroll through the Japanese garden.
The garden features carefully tended trees, colorful flowers, and a koi pond filled with fish. This natural setting creates a peaceful transition from the warm waters of the bath to the calm of your evening.
Note: Please remain within the ryokan grounds while wearing your yukata.
Guests with Tattoos
If you have tattoos, you can use the bath. Please be considerate of other bathers. If you have concerns, contact the staff to confirm any restrictions.
