Overview

Yumetsuzuri rests along the peaceful banks of the Shogawa River in Toyama, offering a relaxing riverside escape surrounded by mountains, forests, and flowing water. This hot spring ryokan blends the charm of traditional Japanese design with the calm of nature. When you open your window, you hear the river’s steady flow—an instant reminder that you’ve stepped into a slower pace of life.

With deep roots in the region’s travel history, Yumetsuzuri stands on what was once a key passageway for travelers journeying through the mountains. Today, it welcomes you with spacious rooms, regional cuisine, and soothing hot springs, inviting you to slow down, rest, and reconnect.

Accommodation

At Yumetsuzuri, you’ll find 30 guest rooms designed to match the natural rhythm of the river and surrounding landscape. Choose from several styles depending on your preferences.

Three Japanese-style rooms come with their own open-air baths, allowing you to enjoy the hot spring waters in private while gazing out over the scenery. One special room also includes a luxurious private open-air bath and extra space to unwind.

You can also stay in one of four Japanese-style rooms fitted with beds, offering the perfect combination of comfort and tradition. Or opt for one of 22 classic Japanese rooms with tatami mats and low tables, ideal for peaceful conversation and a restful sleep on a futon.

Large windows in every room invite in the light and the sound of the river, so you never lose touch with the view. Whether you’re traveling with family or friends, the soft interiors and gentle setting help you settle in right away.

Dining

At Yumetsuzuri, every dish highlights the seasons of Toyama. With access to the sea, rivers, and mountains, the region offers a rich supply of ingredients, and the kitchen draws from them daily.

The manager, a former chef himself, visits the market each morning to select what will later appear on your plate. He understands how freshness and quality shape the flavor of each meal and never compromises when choosing ingredients. Everything served at your table begins with this early morning ritual.

In spring, enjoy white shrimp, firefly squid, and wild mountain plants like bracken and fatsia sprouts. These light and earthy flavors reflect the fresh start of the season. Summer brings sweetfish, flatfish, and giant octopus, paired with round eggplant and lotus root harvested at their peak.

In autumn, savor rich flavors from prawns, tilefish, and sweet shrimp, as well as mushrooms like maitake, nameko, and shimeji. Winter’s boldest flavors come from yellowtail and snow crab, freshly caught in Toyama Bay. Every meal is designed to bring out the best of the land and sea in that exact moment.

Onsen and Wellness

Step into Yumetsuzuri’s open-air baths and feel the warmth melt away your tension. Surrounded by natural rock, cypress wood, and seasonal flowers, the outdoor baths give you a space to stretch out and look up at the sky. Whether you come in snow or sun, you’ll feel the soft warmth of the mineral-rich water wrap around your body.

There are two main bathing areas—Hana-no-yu and Yume-no-yu—each with a large indoor bath and outdoor baths in styles such as pot, rock, or cypress. You’ll rotate between the two during your stay, experiencing different atmospheres and layouts.

If you prefer privacy, reserve one of the family baths for your own quiet session. Relax at your own pace with someone close, without sharing the space with others. Soak your toes, then slowly lower yourself in as you look out over the scenery. You’ll feel your body relax and your mind clear.

Guests with Tattoos

If you have tattoos, you may want to use the private family baths, which can be reserved in advance. These ensure a peaceful and personal experience without concern. Contact the front desk to arrange a time when you check in.

Facilities

Inside the ryokan, you’ll find spaces designed to keep you comfortable throughout your stay. The lobby offers a calming place to sit down after check-in, while the river-facing windows give you a constant connection to nature.

Each bath area includes amenities like shampoo, conditioner, body soap, and comfortable spaces for dressing and resting. After a long soak, head back to your room in your yukata and enjoy a cup of tea while listening to the river flow.

You’ll also find vending machines, a small shop with local items, and staff available to help with sightseeing recommendations or transportation needs.

Activities

Step outside and enjoy the scenery along the Shogawa River, a favorite spot for photographers and those looking for a quiet walk. Depending on the season, you may spot cherry blossoms, fiery red maple leaves, or snow-covered branches reflected in the water.

The region around Yumetsuzuri is known for its natural beauty, and you can explore nearby valleys, hiking trails, and small onsen towns. You can also take a short drive to the historical villages of Gokayama or Shirakawa-go, both UNESCO World Heritage sites known for their traditional thatched-roof homes.
