Overview
Shuku Kaifuu gives you a traditional seaside ryokan stay beside Ise Bay in Minamichita, Aichi. Every room faces the water, so the changing sea, sunset, and coastal air stay close throughout your visit. The building follows a sukiya-inspired Japanese style and has welcomed travellers for more than two decades. Its character comes from tatami rooms, alcoves, flowers, open-air baths, and a warm countryside atmosphere rather than the polished feel of a large resort.
The rooftop bath, Tenjo no Yu, defines the experience. With no roof above the main bathing area, you can watch the sun sink across Ise Bay and look for stars after dark when the weather is clear. You also have several private baths to explore, making Shuku Kaifuu a good choice when you want seafood, sea views, and plenty of bathing time in one stay.
Accommodation
All 29 rooms face Ise Bay and follow a traditional Japanese design. Tatami flooring, low tables, tokonoma alcoves, and wide windows create a spacious place to sit, drink tea, and watch the sea. Standard high-grade rooms include generous 18-tatami layouts or connected 15- and 6-tatami spaces, while corner rooms give you broader views and more room to relax.
You sleep on futons prepared on the tatami. During the day, the room remains open for tea, conversation, or quiet time by the window. The sea-facing position lets you enjoy the evening light from every room, with the sunset becoming one of the most memorable parts of the stay.
Three special rooms add a private open-air bath. Hikaru Genji includes a traditional Japanese garden and an outdoor bath where you can watch the sunset in privacy. Hon’ami draws inspiration from shinden-style architecture and surrounds you with a more classical Japanese atmosphere. Koganeori offers the ryokan’s finest bath view, looking across the changing sea toward the distant light of Kamishima Lighthouse. These baths give you the freedom to soak whenever you like without leaving your room.
Your room includes Wi-Fi, air conditioning, a refrigerator, television, safe, hair dryer, towels, yukata, toothbrushes, razors, shampoo, conditioner, body soap, and other essentials for a traditional ryokan stay. Rooms are non-smoking, with a separate smoking area available within the property.
Dining
Dinner at Shuku Kaifuu focuses on fresh, local ingredients, especially seafood caught nearby in Toyohama Port—famous across Japan for its natural red sea bream. The meals highlight natural flavors and seasonal ingredients, served in a simple, elegant style.
You might enjoy sashimi, grilled fish, or warm dishes prepared with care. The menu varies, but each meal aims to match the peaceful setting of the ryokan. The staff prepares dinner in a way that keeps the focus on freshness and presentation without overwhelming the palate.
Please note that while the cooking is heartfelt, it’s not haute cuisine. The flavors are clean and local, meant to complement your stay by the sea.
Onsen and Wellness
Shuku Kaifuu is part of Yamami Onsen and uses chloride spring water within its bathing facilities. The water is not source-flowing, and some of the scenic and private baths use heated water rather than natural hot spring water. Each bath offers a different setting, so the experience is as much about the sea, breeze, wood, and sky as it is about the water itself.
Tenjo no Yu sits on the top floor and opens directly toward Ise Bay. You can soak while watching the sunset, feel the sea breeze across the water, and enjoy the stars on clear nights. A cold sake service is offered around sunset, letting you float a cup beside you while looking across the bay. Tenjo no Yu is reserved for women from 8:00 PM to 10:00 PM and operates as a mixed-gender bath at other times, so you should plan your visit around the schedule that feels most comfortable.
You can also use three private baths without an additional bathing charge. Hamarikyu is a cypress open-air bath built without nails by skilled temple and shrine carpenters. It is available during the evening in reserved 30-minute sessions. Fugetsu no Yu and Enseki no Yu can be used when available without a set advance reservation. Fugetsu no Yu offers a sheltered bathing atmosphere with fresh air through its open design, while Enseki no Yu faces the mountain side and uses a floor covered with smooth gravel stones for a distinctive feel beneath your feet.
Mangetsu no Yu provides an indoor bathing option when you prefer a more sheltered setting. Bath access, water type, and gender arrangements differ between bathing areas, so you should check the current schedule when you arrive.
Guests with Tattoos
If you have tattoos, choose one of the private bathing options for a comfortable soak with your own companion or group. You can reserve Hamarikyu after arrival or use Fugetsu no Yu and Enseki no Yu when they are free. A room with its own open-air bath gives you the greatest freedom, allowing you to bathe privately at any time during your stay.
Facilities
Shuku Kaifuu includes a welcome and tea area, Urushi Salon for dinner and breakfast, a post-bath bar, a coffee corner, a shop, a karaoke salon, banquet rooms, elevators, free Wi-Fi in every room, and free parking. The banquet spaces range from smaller rooms for private gatherings to Sakura-an, which can host larger celebrations and group events. The karaoke salon is generally available for pre-arranged group use.
The post-bath area gives you a place to pause after soaking, while the welcome area introduces you to the ryokan with tea on arrival. Wheelchairs can be borrowed, and elevators connect the main floors, although some baths and areas include steps and are not fully accessible.
Standard check-in begins at 3:00 PM, and check-out is at 10:00 AM. The latest arrival time can depend on your meal plan, so you should arrive early enough to enjoy dinner without rushing.
Activities
You can make the ryokan itself the focus of your stay by moving between your ocean-view room, meals, rooftop bath, and private baths. Sunset is an especially important part of the day, whether you watch it from your room or soak in Tenjo no Yu as the sky changes over Ise Bay.
The Minamichita coast also gives you beaches, fishing-town scenery, lighthouses, and local food stops. Yamami Beach is nearby for a coastal walk, while Minamichita Beach Land offers dolphin shows and close encounters with marine life. Nomasaki Lighthouse, the oldest lighthouse in Aichi, gives you another scenic stop along the peninsula.
You can also visit Ebisenbei no Sato to watch shrimp crackers being made and shop for local snacks. If your visit matches the summer schedule, the Toyohama Sea Bream Festival brings giant handmade sea bream floats through the town and into the water as part of a long-running local celebration.
