Overview
The Ritz-Carlton, Nikko places you beside Lake Chuzenji in the mountain landscape of Nikko National Park. From the hotel, you can look toward the lake and Mount Nantai, while Kegon Falls and several of Oku-Nikko’s best-known natural sights sit close by.
Japanese design shapes the experience. Wood, stone, wide windows, local crafts, and garden views create a strong connection with the landscape. Each season brings a different atmosphere, from spring flowers and cool summer greenery to autumn colour and winter snow.
You can spend your day exploring waterfalls, temples, wetlands, and forest trails before returning for Tochigi-inspired dining, sulfur-rich hot spring bathing, and time in the spa. The combination of nature, culture, and polished service makes the hotel one of Nikko’s most distinctive places to stay.
Accommodation
Rooms and suites feature open layouts, floor-to-ceiling windows, and views of Lake Chuzenji, Mount Nantai, or the riverside garden. Choose from king or double rooms, Lake Chuzenji View rooms, Mount Nantai View rooms, Riverside Garden View accommodation, Lake View Suites, and The Ritz-Carlton Suite.
Each room includes a genkan entrance where you can remove your shoes, an engawa-style sitting area, and a Japanese-inspired stone bathroom. The bathroom provides a deep soaking tub and separate shower, giving you space to unwind after sightseeing.
You also have a dining and work table, minibar, Nespresso coffee machine, yukata, Japanese-style sandals, Wi-Fi, and carefully selected bath products.
The Lake View Suites add a separate living space and wider views across Lake Chuzenji. For the most spacious stay, The Ritz-Carlton Suite covers approximately 277㎡ and includes a bedroom, living room, dining area, service kitchen, private fitness space, and massage treatment room.
Dining
Dining highlights produce, meat, fish, sake, and other ingredients connected to Tochigi and the surrounding region.
The Japanese Restaurant by The Ritz-Carlton, Nikko serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Local ingredients and traditional culinary skills shape each menu, while Japanese craft details add character to the dining room. Local sake gives you another way to explore the flavours of Tochigi.
Lakehouse takes a Western approach to ingredients from nearby farms and producers. The relaxed countryside-house concept, fireplace, terrace, and lake views make it a comfortable choice for lunch or dinner.
The Lobby Lounge serves light meals and Nikko Afternoon Tea beside large garden-facing windows. In the evening, The Bar offers Japanese and international whiskies, along with original cocktails made with ingredients from Tochigi and hand-cut natural ice from Nikko.
In-room dining allows you to enjoy breakfast, lunch, or dinner from the privacy of your room or balcony.
Onsen and wellness
The Ritz-Carlton, Nikko has a natural public onsen within its spa. It was the first hot spring facility created under The Ritz-Carlton brand and receives its water from Nikko Yumoto Onsen.
The sulfur spring begins clear and turns milky white when it meets the air. Separate bathing areas include an indoor bath, open-air bath, cypress-scented dry sauna, changing rooms, and a spa lounge overlooking the garden.
The onsen opens from 5:30 to 12:00 and again from 14:00 to 23:00. Towels, skincare products, shampoo, conditioner, body soap, hairdryers, and other bathing items are provided.
Your private bathroom includes a deep soaking tub, but it does not use natural hot spring water. A secluded private open-air onsen experience is available when combined with an eligible spa appointment.
The spa also offers massages, facials, body treatments, couples’ treatments, and therapies inspired by Japanese wellness traditions. Treatment hours run from 12:00 to 20:30, while the reception remains open until 21:00.
Guests with tattoos
Tattoos are accepted in the shared indoor and open-air onsen baths. You do not need to cover them with stickers or bathing wear.
You can also enjoy the private open-air onsen when you reserve the qualifying spa experience. Access is not accepted for anyone connected with organised criminal groups.
Facilities
You can maintain your exercise routine in the fitness studio, which remains open 24 hours a day. Equipment includes treadmills, exercise bikes, a cross trainer, strength equipment, dumbbells, stretching mats, and medicine balls.
The hotel also provides a 24-hour front desk, concierge assistance, room service, daily turndown service, laundry services, elevators, accessible facilities, EV charging, and paid on-site or valet parking.
Ritz Kids activities introduce younger travellers to Nikko’s landscape through play, exploration, crafts, treasure hunts, and seasonal outdoor experiences. In-room tent setups and themed items are also available through the Ritz Kids Safari experience.
Activities
Lake Chuzenji, Kegon Falls, and the surrounding national park place outdoor experiences within easy reach. You can walk beside the lake, cycle through Oku-Nikko, hike forest routes, visit waterfalls, or explore Senjogahara Marshland.
Seasonal activities may include paddleboarding, fishing, snowshoeing, cycling, and guided nature experiences. Electric mountain bikes are available for exploring nearby viewpoints and cultural sites.
You can also join experiences connected to Nikko’s spiritual and artistic heritage. These may include morning zazen meditation, Nikko-bori woodcarving, prayer bead making, and temple ceremonies at Chuzenji Temple.
The former British and Italian embassy villas introduce you to Lake Chuzenji’s history as an international summer retreat. Farther down the mountain, Nikko Toshogu Shrine, Rinnoji Temple, and Futarasan Shrine form part of Nikko’s UNESCO World Heritage area.
