Overview
Toba View Hotel Hanashinju is a Japanese-style inn built on the high ground of Arashima in Ise-Shima, Toba, Mie Prefecture. The setting is a hill above Toba Bay, and from this elevation the water fills your view from the lobby, the baths, and most guest rooms. Arashima is connected to the mainland but retains an island character, and the hotel’s position above it gives the property a sense of remove that the bay views only amplify.
The hotel suits families, couples, and groups equally well, and has built a particular reputation for thoughtful hospitality and local seasonal cuisine. From Kintetsu Toba Station, the hotel runs a free shuttle bus approximately every 30 minutes between 8:00 AM and 10:00 AM in the morning and 2:00 PM to 6:00 PM in the afternoon. By car from Ise Grand Shrine the drive takes about 30 minutes, and about 25 minutes from Ise-West Interchange.
Accommodation
The hotel has 48 rooms across two wings, five of which have private open-air baths.
The Hanaikada-kan wing was completely renovated and reopened in August 2008. Every room in this wing has a bath with a view of Toba Bay, and the wing offers three distinct room types. The rooms with open-air baths are Japanese-style, 10 tatami mats in size and accommodating up to five guests, each designed around one of five different flowers with a Shigaraki ware steam bath. The rooms with a beautiful view are 8-tatami Japanese-style rooms for up to four guests, designed in Japanese modern style. The special Hazuki suite combines a main room of 10 tatami mats, a 4.5-tatami adjoining room, and a living room, accommodating up to seven guests, and is the only room of its type at the hotel. On the top floor of Hanaikada-kan, a special Japanese-Western style room with a panoramic bath offers unobstructed views of Toba Bay in every direction, with a Simmons bed for sleeping.
The Hanashinju-kan wing offers spacious Japanese-style rooms at 12.5 tatami mats accommodating up to six guests, with bay views and on clear days a sight line as far as the Atsumi Peninsula in Aichi Prefecture. Mountain-view rooms in this wing are 6 tatami mats and accommodate two guests, with some rooms having no private bath.
All rooms include a toilet with bidet functions, air conditioning and heating, refrigerator, TV, electric water kettle, down quilt, yukata, towels, bath towels, toothbrushes, combs, shampoo, conditioner, body soap, facial wash, and a hair dryer.
Check-in is from 3:00 PM. Check-out is by 10:00 AM. All rooms are non-smoking from June 18, 2026.
Dining
Dinner celebrates the seasonal seafood of Ise-Shima at a pace that lets each course register properly. Spring brings black rockfish, Japanese halfbeak, conger eel, and wakame seaweed. Summer offers abalone, Iwagaki oyster, sea urchin, garden eel, and turban shell. Autumn features spiny lobster, prawn, and brown barracuda. Winter brings puffer fish, oyster, and turban shell. The head chef has been recognised with the prestigious Medal with Yellow Ribbon for his culinary craft, and the kitchen’s approach prizes seasonal precision and careful technique. Guests can choose to take dinner in their room or in the restaurant overlooking Toba Bay.
Breakfast reflects the Japanese spirit and local ingredients of the region. From July 2025, individual stays include a half-buffet style breakfast.
Onsen and Wellness
The chef name doesn’t appear on the English pages. The Visit Iseshima bureau gives “Sadakatsu Matsuura, recipient of the Medal with Yellow Ribbon.” The document’s claim of “Kazuya Iwaki” can’t be verified from the official site, and the session notes from before also noted this. I’ll use the verified name from the regional tourism bureau. Now I have everything I need. Here is the piece:

Onsen and Wellness
The hot spring water comes from Sakakibara Hot Springs (Spring No. 2), a simple alkaline spring certified in Mie Prefecture. The water is indicated for neuralgia, muscular pain, joint pain, stiff shoulders, motor paralysis, bruises, sprains, chronic digestive illnesses, hemorrhoids, sensitivity to cold, and recovery from fatigue. It is contraindicated during pregnancy, especially in the first and third trimesters, and for acute illness, serious cardiac or kidney conditions, and several other serious medical conditions.
The open-air bath, Yūyū, projects from the hillside ten metres above ground, directly facing Toba Bay. Bathing hours for Yūyū are 5:00 AM to 9:00 AM and 3:00 PM to 11:00 PM. Alongside the open-air bath, a rose bath uses farmed roses gentle on the skin, designed specifically for women bathing with a view of the bay. A cascading bath (utaseyu) provides a massaging effect from water falling over the shoulders and back.
The two large indoor baths are Suigun no Yu and Birei no Yu, with wide windows looking out over Toba Bay as the light and colour of the water changes through the day. These baths are open from 5:00 AM to 9:00 AM and 3:00 PM to midnight. Both areas include spacious washing stations with baby baths and baby chairs for families bathing with young children. Shampoo, conditioner, body soap, razors, shower caps, combs, hair dryers, and cotton swabs are provided in all bathing areas. A shampoo bar near the bath entrance lets you choose your preferred products to take in.
Guests with tattoos
Tattoos are not permitted in any of the public bathing areas. This policy covers all shared bath spaces and applies without exception, including tattoo stickers. Contact the hotel before your visit if you have questions about access and bathing options.
Facilities
The lobby faces Toba Bay and has seating where you can settle with a drink and watch the water. The shop near the lobby carries pearls, local Ise sweets and confections, seafood products, and nostalgic toys, and opens from 7:00 AM to 10:00 AM and again from 3:00 PM to 8:30 PM. Banquet rooms accommodate up to 150 guests and can be arranged for karaoke and entertainment. A meeting room holds up to 12 people and is available for workation stays. The Kids Park is an indoor play space with a ball pool, climbing wall, and slide, with an attached café where accompanying adults can sit and relax regardless of weather. Free Wi-Fi runs throughout the hotel. Free parking is on site. A beauty salon and a games corner are also available.
Activities
The hotel is about a ten-minute drive from Toba Aquarium, one of Japan’s largest and most celebrated marine life facilities. Ise Grand Shrine, the most sacred Shinto site in Japan, is around 30 minutes by car. Mikimoto Pearl Island, where cultured pearl cultivation was pioneered by Kokichi Mikimoto, is nearby. The Meotoiwa (Wedded Rocks) at Futami, held sacred as a site representing Izanagi and Izanami, is about 20 minutes away. The hotel can provide sightseeing information and access guidance for these and other local sites.
A model itinerary for the hotel involves an early morning bath with the bay view before breakfast, a daytime excursion to local shrines or the aquarium, a return in the afternoon to change into yukata and use the Kids Park or lobby, and a long evening dinner followed by a late soak in the open-air bath.
