Overview
Look across Matsumoto and the Northern Alps from Shoho, a large hot spring ryokan set on the hills of Utsukushigahara Onsen. Every room faces the city and mountain range, giving you broad daytime views and the lights of the castle town after sunset.
The black-walled entrance takes inspiration from Matsumoto Castle and creates a strong sense of place as soon as you arrive. Beyond it, the open lobby, garden terrace, observation baths, and footbath keep the mountains in view throughout your stay.
You can spend your time enjoying seasonal Shinshu cuisine, moving between seven bathing experiences, or simply sitting with a drink while the light changes across the Alps. Matsumoto Castle is around ten minutes away by car, making Shoho a convenient base for exploring the city before returning to the hot springs.
Accommodation
You can choose from Japanese rooms with futon bedding, Western twin rooms, Japanese-Western layouts, large suites, and rooms with private natural hot spring baths. Every room is non-smoking and includes complimentary Wi-Fi.
The 36-square-metre West Wing Japanese Room provides ten tatami mats and a clear view towards Matsumoto and the Alps. This is the standard choice when you want a traditional ryokan room with futon bedding.
The upper-floor West Wing Japanese-Modern Twin combines two beds with a Japanese sitting area. A second 36-square-metre twin category sits on the top floor and adds a private observation bath supplied with natural hot spring water.
The Central Wing Deluxe Twin measures 34 square metres and places two beds beside a wide window facing the Alps. It works well when you prefer a fully Western sleeping arrangement.
The 56-square-metre East Wing Japanese Room combines ten tatami mats with a separate living area. One version includes a shower room with a private sauna, while another adds a panoramic natural hot spring bath overlooking the city and mountains.
The 70-square-metre Central Wing Japanese-Western Room has a 7.5-tatami area, a living space, Simmons beds, and a private open-air onsen. You can bathe at any time while looking towards the Matsumoto townscape and Northern Alps.
The 55-square-metre West Wing Japanese Room also includes a private observation onsen. Its tatami layout lets you enjoy a traditional room while keeping natural hot spring bathing completely private.
For more space, the 86-square-metre West Wing Special Room combines a Japanese room, bedroom, and living area. The largest choice is the 113-square-metre top-floor suite, which has a 12.5-tatami room, sitting room, twin bedroom with Simmons beds, massage chair, and private observation onsen.
Every room includes a private bathroom, washlet-style toilet, air conditioning, television, refrigerator, safe, hairdryer, towels, samue-style indoor clothing, and toiletries. Humidifiers, irons, and trouser presses can be borrowed. Children’s indoor clothing, slippers, and amenity sets are also available.
Dining
Dinner introduces you to Shinshu through an original Japanese kaiseki meal. Seasonal vegetables, edible mountain plants, clear local water, and regional meat and fish shape each course.
Ingredients may include Shinshu wagyu, Shinshu salmon, Shinshu Golden Gamecock chicken, grilled river fish, horse sashimi, and Koshihikari rice grown in Azumino. The menu changes with the season and your confirmed plan.
At Shunsai Dining Shinshu, an open kitchen lets you watch selected dishes being finished before they reach your table. The stone oven is used for local vegetables and desserts, while private dining rooms give you your own space for conversation.
Shokusai Kamikochi offers a quieter dinner in a fully private dining room. Freshly prepared dishes and Shinshu brand ingredients make this a strong choice when privacy is important to you.
Breakfast is served as a Japanese and Western buffet at Shunsai Dining Shinshu. You can choose Shinshu soba, miso soup made with local miso, Azumino rice, Nozawana pickles, seasonal vegetables, egg dishes, bread, French toast, and bowls topped with ingredients of your choice.
The open kitchen prepares omelettes and fried eggs using local chicken eggs. Breakfast normally runs from 7:00 to 9:00.
Children’s meals are available. Share food-allergy requirements before arrival so the kitchen can explain which adjustments are possible.
Onsen and Wellness
Shoho uses natural water from Utsukushigahara Onsen, one of Matsumoto’s historic hot spring districts. The spring is classified as a weakly alkaline, hypotonic simple spring.
The source emerges at approximately 40.5°C, with a flow of around 150 litres per minute. The shared and private baths use a combined overflow, circulation, and filtration system to control temperature and hygiene. The outdoor footbath is the only free-flowing source-fed bath inside the property.
Traditional bathing indications include muscle and joint discomfort, neuralgia, stiff shoulders, bruises, sprains, sensitivity to cold, fatigue, and recovery after illness.
The observation open-air bath places the Matsumoto townscape and Northern Alps directly in front of you. Beside it, the observation indoor bath offers the same broad outlook through large windows and includes a silk bath filled with fine bubbles.
The garden open-air baths surround you with plants and natural stone. An outdoor whirlpool adds gentle bubbles and water movement, while the night sky changes the atmosphere after dark.
The main indoor bathing areas contain a standard-temperature tub and a slightly cooler bath. With 31 washing stations, the space remains practical even during busier periods.
A low-temperature sauna operates inside both main bathing areas. It normally opens from 15:00 until 22:00.
The main communal baths and garden open-air baths normally open from 5:00 until midnight. The observation bathing area changes between men and women, with access for women from 15:00 until midnight and for men from 5:00 until 10:30.
Three reservable private baths give you a more personal experience. Hisho no Yu has a dark stone design, Kiho no Yu uses a brighter Japanese interior, and Goten no Yu connects an indoor bath with an outdoor tub. Each private session lasts 60 minutes and should be arranged ahead of arrival when possible.
After bathing, you can stop at Yuraku for cold water or tea and use the complimentary massage beds. The women’s bathing area also includes individual powder spaces.
Guests with Tattoos
If you have tattoos, use one of the three reservable private baths rather than the shared indoor baths, observation baths, open-air baths, saunas, or communal changing areas. Tattooed bathers may be refused access to the shared facilities, and no guaranteed cover-seal exception is provided.
You can also book a room with its own natural hot spring bath. These rooms let you enjoy Utsukushigahara Onsen whenever you wish without entering a communal bathing area.
Facilities
The large lobby has a high ceiling and broad windows facing the Northern Alps. It gives you an open place to sit while waiting to check in or planning your next day in Matsumoto.
Shakunage Lounge serves complimentary welcome drinks from mid-afternoon until the evening. You can stop here after arriving before moving to your room or the baths.
The third-floor garden terrace opens from early morning until late evening. On clear days, it provides an excellent setting for photographs with the Northern Alps behind you.
Tenku Kairo displays photographs and pressed-flower artwork inspired by the seasons of Shinshu. A large Matsumoto temari in the lobby introduces you to one of the city’s traditional crafts.
Temari Shop carries Shinshu foods, local products, clothing, drinks, and souvenirs. Parcel delivery can also be arranged here.
Banquet rooms include a large hall that can be divided into smaller spaces. The convention facilities support meetings and organised events, while karaoke rooms provide an evening option after dinner.
Beauty treatments can be reserved at the Miyabi treatment room. The property also has two EV chargers, complimentary parking for around 100 vehicles, and bicycle storage that can be arranged in advance.
Activities
Begin with the flower-lined footbath, where you can soak your feet while looking towards the Northern Alps. It normally opens from 6:00 until 22:00, although rain and poor weather may affect access.
Seasonal displays and events take place throughout the year. Spring brings traditional Hina dolls, summer may include a ceiling installation made with colourful Japanese umbrellas and stargazing activities, while autumn and winter introduce themed decorations and celebrations.
Matsumoto Castle is around ten minutes away by car. You can enter its original wooden keep, walk around the moat, and continue into the old streets of Nakamachi and Nawate.
The Town Sneaker bus connects many of central Matsumoto’s leading sights. A day pass makes it easier to visit the castle, museums, shopping streets, and station area without driving.
Utsukushigahara Highland is around 45 minutes away by car during its main open season. At higher elevations, you can walk through grassland and enjoy broad views across the surrounding mountains.
Kamikochi is around two hours away. Private cars cannot enter the protected central area, so you continue by authorised bus or taxi from one of the designated transfer points.
Azumino gives you access to clear streams, countryside cycling, museums, and the Daio Wasabi Farm. You can also visit Alps Azumino National Government Park for walking routes, gardens, seasonal activities, and family play areas.
