Overview

KANOUYA Shima Onsen gives you a private riverside retreat in the quieter Hinatami area of Shima Onsen, Gunma. Opened in November 2024 after the full renovation of an older Japanese inn, this small property has only eight rooms, each facing the clear Shima River and each including its own open-air hot spring bath.

You come here for privacy, river views, long baths, and a dining experience built around Joshu beef rather than a traditional kaiseki menu. Large windows bring the forest and water into the rooms, while the sound of the river stays with you as you rest or soak. The limited room count also keeps the atmosphere intimate, allowing you to spend most of your stay without moving through busy shared spaces.

KANOUYA sits about ten minutes on foot from the main Shima Onsen bus stop and shopping area. This places you close enough to explore the town while giving you a quieter setting beside the river. Spring brings fresh green leaves, autumn changes the valley to red and gold, and winter creates a striking contrast between snow, steam, and warm spring water.

Accommodation

You can choose from eight individually designed river-facing rooms named Dadiri, Mångata, Oubaitori, Gökotta, Hiraeth, Friluftsliv, Dalalæða, and Lieko. Every room includes two semi-double beds and a private open-air bath filled with Shima Onsen water. Selected rooms can also use extra beds when you stay with a larger party.

The third floor forms the suite level. Dadiri is the highest-grade corner suite, designed around listening to the river and feeling closely connected to the valley. Mångata includes a raised tatami seating area beside the window, giving you a comfortable place to sit and watch moonlight or morning sun reflect across the water. Oubaitori adds both a terrace and the largest raised tatami area, with broad windows framing the river and changing forest.

The second-floor rooms combine river views with practical space for longer stays. Gökotta takes its name from a Swedish word connected to waking early and listening to birdsong, making its river-facing bath especially inviting in the morning. Hiraeth creates a quiet setting shaped by the sound of the water and the changing seasons. Friluftsliv draws inspiration from the Nordic idea of spending meaningful time close to nature. Hiraeth and Friluftsliv include some of the larger open-air baths on this floor, while the rooms also provide desks for reading, planning, or remote work.

The first-floor rooms, Dalalæða and Lieko, stand closest to the river and feature unusual deep standing baths. You can soak while standing or sitting, surrounded by high ceilings and views toward the mountains and water. Lieko gives you one of the closest positions to the river, with the illuminated stream visible after dark. Dalalæða combines a spacious interior with a standing bath facing the Shima landscape.

Every room includes an empty refrigerator, electric kettle, television, air conditioning and heating, shower, washbasin, washlet toilet, hair dryer, and free Wi-Fi. You also receive bath towels, face towels, yukata, indoor footwear, toothbrushes, razors, hairbrushes, a cotton set, facial care items, shampoo, conditioner, body soap, and a shower cap.

Dining

Dining takes place at J’s CANYON, the steakhouse on the ground floor. Dinner moves away from a standard ryokan kaiseki format and places Joshu beef at the centre of the meal. Chef Daisuke Sato, who achieved third place nationally at the Japan Burger Championship 2024, uses his knowledge of meat to bring out the tenderness and deep flavour of locally raised beef.

The signature experience includes Joshu beef L-bone steak, a rare cut that combines two textures of beef around the bone. The course also uses fresh ingredients from Gunma, allowing you to enjoy the region through both the main steak and the accompanying dishes. Additional food can be ordered at the restaurant, although larger steaks may need advance preparation.

J’s CANYON opens from 5:30 PM to 9:00 PM, with last food orders at 8:00 PM and last drink orders at 8:30 PM. A dessert plate with a short message can be arranged for a birthday, anniversary, or another celebration.

Breakfast follows a Japanese style and is also served at J’s CANYON. Meal conditions depend on your chosen plan, and room-only stays are available when you prefer to explore Shima Onsen’s cafés and restaurants. You can also bring your own food and drinks into your room at no extra charge, use the refrigerator, and request access to a microwave through the front desk.

Onsen and Wellness

Every room includes a private source-flowing open-air bath, so you can enjoy Shima Onsen water whenever you like. You can begin with a morning soak beside the river, return after walking through town, or bathe late at night while listening to the water below. You never need to reserve a time or share your room bath with anyone outside your stay.

The rooms use a blend of water from two Shima Onsen sources, Yamadori-no-Yu and Yunoizumi-no-Yu. Shima Onsen has served as a place of bathing and recovery for centuries and is traditionally said to ease “forty thousand ailments,” which inspired its name. The water is known for its gentle feel, warming quality, and connection to skin care and relaxation.

Your bathing experience changes with your room. The first-floor standing baths are unusually deep and place you close to the river. The larger second-floor baths give you more space to stretch out, while the third-floor rooms add raised tatami areas or terraces where you can rest between soaks.

KANOUYA does not have a shared large bath inside the building. You can use the large public bath at the nearby sister property LULUD from 3:00 PM to 8:00 PM. Access is complimentary when your reservation is made through KANOUYA’s direct booking site, while a discounted fee applies to other reservations. Take the bathing basket and towel from your room, as bath towels are not prepared at LULUD.

For deeper relaxation, private salon Sowaka offers body massage and aroma oil treatments on selected dates. Massage can take place in your room or inside the salon, while aroma body care is provided in the treatment space. Advance phone booking is recommended because operating dates and hours change.

Guests with tattoos

If you have tattoos, you can enjoy Shima Onsen water in the private open-air bath attached to your room. Every room includes its own bathing space, so you do not need to use a shared public bath during your stay.

Facilities

KANOUYA includes eight river-facing rooms with private open-air hot spring baths, the J’s CANYON steakhouse, private treatment salon Sowaka, room service, free Wi-Fi, television in every room, in-room refrigerators, and parking. Drinks can be ordered through room service or purchased from the paid refrigerator selection, although there are no vending machines inside the property.

The building is non-smoking, with a designated smoking room on the ground floor. You can send luggage ahead for collection at reception, and luggage storage can be arranged. Pets cannot stay at the property.

There is no elevator, and every room requires the use of stairs. The reception level sits between the second and third floors, and the first-floor rooms involve a longer staircase. A third-floor room is the easiest choice when you prefer fewer steps, although you still need to use stairs to reach it.

Activities

You can walk to the central Shima Onsen shopping area in about ten minutes, where you can explore small cafés, local shops, bridges, and streets beside the river. The town keeps the atmosphere of a traditional mountain hot spring destination, making it easy to combine a slow walk with repeated baths in your room.

Oizumi Falls is about ten minutes away on foot, while Yakushido Hall, Yakuoji Temple, and Gomusou no Yu are around fifteen minutes away. Oku-Shima Lake can be reached in about forty minutes on foot, giving you views of the bright blue water surrounded by forest. The longer route to Maya Falls takes around two and a half hours each way and suits you when you want a more demanding walk.

You can also make the room itself the focus of your stay. Sit beside the large window, listen to the river, soak several times, enjoy steak at J’s CANYON, and watch the forest darken after sunset. The setting works especially well when you want to step away from a busy sightseeing schedule.
