Overview
Mikawa Bay Hills Hotel is a hilltop hot spring hotel overlooking Mikawa Bay Quasi-National Park. You stay high above the water, with views toward Mikawa Bay, the Atsumi Peninsula, and the Chita Peninsula. This is a good choice when you want open scenery, hot spring bathing, and an easy base for the Nishio and Gamagori area.
The hotel focuses on views from the rooms, baths, lobby, and restaurant. You can spend the day sightseeing around the bay, then return for dinner, a soak in the open-air bath, and quiet time above the coastline. Free parking and a reservation-based shuttle from JR Gamagori Station make access easier if you travel by car or train.
Accommodation
You can choose from Japanese-style rooms, Japanese rooms with beds, Western twin rooms, larger Japanese rooms, and a special Japanese-Western room. The official room page says every room has large windows with views of the seasonal mountains and Mikawa Bay.
The 10-tatami Japanese room gives you a standard tatami stay, and some rooms let you see the city lights at night. The 12-tatami Japanese room gives you more space and sea views from the window. The 18-tatami-and-larger Japanese rooms work well when you want more room to spread out.
The Japanese room with beds is a good option when you like tatami atmosphere but prefer sleeping in a bed. Some of these rooms have a bath, while others have a shower booth only. The Western twin room has beds and a private bath.
The special room combines a 10-tatami Japanese room with a twin-bed area. It sits on the top floor and gives you wide views of Mikawa Bay and the night scenery. This room also has a historic note: Emperor Showa and Empress Kojun stayed in this room in 1979.
Dining
Dinner is seasonal kaiseki cuisine prepared with local ingredients. The official dining page lists seasonal recommended kaiseki meals named “Miyabi” and “Hana.” You eat at Restaurant Aoi / Aguri, where you can enjoy your meal while looking out toward the sea.
You can also add extra dishes with advance reservation. Listed options include sea bream served in a wooden tub, spiny lobster sashimi, simmered kasago rockfish, live abalone steak, and Aichi beef steak. Reservation deadlines vary by dish, so you should request these before your stay.
Breakfast is usually served buffet style, with Japanese and Western dishes. The hotel notes that breakfast may change to a set menu depending on the stay situation that day. Breakfast is also served at Restaurant Aoi / Aguri
Onsen and Wellness
The hot spring is one of the main reasons to stay here. You can soak while looking across Mikawa Bay from indoor and open-air baths. The hotel uses transported natural hot spring water from Ikeda Yuge Onsen, with heating and added water.
The open-air bath water is a sodium-bicarbonate spring, classified as hypotonic, alkaline, and low-temperature. Described as “Bijin no Yu,” or beauty water, because the bicarbonate-rich, alkaline water helps wash away skin oils and leaves the skin feeling smooth.
Bath areas include Tenkei, a large indoor bath with two big tubs and a sauna; Yamamomo no Yu, an open-air natural hot spring bath with bay views; Shikisai, a spacious indoor bath where you may see the sunset on clear days; and Ajisai no Yu, an open-air natural hot spring bath surrounded by trees and bird sounds.
After bathing, you can rest at Ikkyu, the post-bath lounge. It has free massage chairs, foot-massage machines, and leg-massage machines.
Guests with Tattoos
Tattoos are currently not allowed in the public onsen areas.
