Overview

Tokiwa Bekkan stands quietly in the backstreets of Kinosaki Onsen, surrounded by a lush Japanese garden. Just a 20-minute walk from Kinosaki Station, this peaceful retreat offers you a calm escape from the busy streets of the onsen town.

This wooden ryokan keeps its focus on personal stays, making sure every moment is unhurried and every detail is considered. You’ll experience a nostalgic warmth in the atmosphere—gentle, familiar, and unmistakably Japanese.

There’s no “main building.” The name “Bekkan” (annex) honors the ryokan’s origins and its founder’s desire to provide a restful space away from the bustle of town. While the original site now serves as a café, this annex continues the spirit of thoughtful hospitality.

Accommodation

Tokiwa Bekkan has just 23 rooms, each designed to help you relax in quiet comfort. All rooms are non-smoking and arranged around a tranquil Japanese garden.

Rooms with Open-Air Baths

Seven rooms include private open-air baths. Each has a unique layout and feel. Soak at your own pace while listening to the sounds of nature. These rooms offer the most private and relaxing way to enjoy your stay.

Standard Garden-Facing Rooms

These rooms face the central courtyard. Watch the garden change with the seasons. At night, soft lighting brings out a dreamlike glow. In the morning, gentle sunlight and fresh air welcome a new day.

Detached Room with Cypress Bath

This room includes a fragrant cypress bath and a massage chair. It’s the perfect place to unwind and ease the body and mind.

Spacious Rooms with Massage Chairs

Two wide rooms feature tatami flooring and comfortable massage chairs. Stretch out, let your body relax, and enjoy a deep sense of rest.

Please note: By local law, the water used in indoor baths is not onsen water.

Dining

Tokiwa Bekkan serves both dinner and breakfast in your room. This allows you to fully relax, enjoy privacy, and savor each dish at your own pace.

The chefs carefully select seasonal ingredients from the Tajima region and craft each dish with attention to flavor and presentation. Menus change monthly to reflect what’s in season.

Seasonal Kaiseki Cuisine

Your meal includes around ten dishes: seafood from the Sea of Japan, mountain vegetables, grilled and simmered items, and more. Everything is prepared to highlight the natural taste of each ingredient.

Hot Pot Specialties

You can enjoy hot pots featuring local duck or fresh seafood. These are prepared with care, bringing out rich umami in a clean, flavorful broth.

Tsuiyama Crab (Winter Only)

During the colder months, the ryokan serves locally caught Tsuiyama crab—known for its freshness and delicate flavor. Whether grilled, steamed, or raw, each piece is prepared to bring out the best texture and taste.

Breakfast is also served in your room and includes a traditional Japanese menu with carefully selected local ingredients.

Tokiwa Bekkan accepts reservations for up to six people per group. If you’re dining with four or more, or booking more than one room, meals are served in a private dining room. The ryokan does not accept group or tour bookings of seven or more.

Onsen and Wellness

In addition to the six public bathhouses around Kinosaki, Tokiwa Bekkan includes its own peaceful indoor bath.

Indoor Bath

The ryokan’s in-house bath provides a quieter, more relaxed alternative to the public baths. After a day of strolling through town, enjoy a warm soak in a calm setting.

Eight-Bath Experience

By staying here, you can enjoy the “Eight-Bath Experience”—visiting the six public bathhouses in town plus the ryokan’s private baths. Each has its own atmosphere, and you can explore them at your own pace.

Guests with Tattoos

The ryokan does not list a specific tattoo policy. If you plan to use the public baths and have tattoos, it may be best to ask in advance or use the private bath at the ryokan.
