Overview

Annex Turtle HOTORI-AN offers a peaceful riverside stay near Nikko’s UNESCO World Heritage district. Set beside the Daiya River and surrounded by trees, the inn gives you a quiet place to rest while keeping Toshogu Shrine, Rinnoji Temple, Futarasan Shrine, and other historic sites within walking distance.

With only 11 rooms, the atmosphere feels personal and easygoing. You can explore temples, cedar-lined paths, and riverside walks during the day, then return for a private hot spring soak overlooking the water and forest.

The simple bed-and-breakfast style works well when sightseeing is your main priority. You receive a comfortable Japanese room, an optional morning meal, useful facilities, and a location that connects cultural landmarks with Nikko’s natural scenery.

Accommodation

All rooms follow a Japanese-style layout with tatami flooring, low furniture, and futon bedding. Room choices include single, twin, triple, and larger family layouts, allowing you to select enough space for your group.

Each room includes a private bathroom, air conditioning, heating, a flat-screen television, hairdryer, slippers, and toiletries. Free Wi-Fi helps you organise routes and check transport information during your stay.

The interiors remain simple and uncluttered. After walking through Nikko, you can change into comfortable clothing, sit on the tatami, and enjoy the quieter riverside setting before preparing your futon for the night.

Check-in begins at 14:00, and check-out is by 10:00.

Dining

An optional continental breakfast is served in the dining area. The light morning meal normally includes bread, an egg, fresh fruit, and hot drinks, giving you an easy start before several hours of sightseeing.

Dinner is not a central part of the stay. You can explore restaurants and cafés around the World Heritage district and central Nikko, where choices include yuba dishes, soba noodles, curry, set meals, and casual Japanese food.

Many restaurants in Nikko close early, so arranging dinner before returning to the inn makes the evening more convenient. A drinks vending machine is available on the property.

Onsen and wellness

The panoramic hot spring bath uses water from Nikko Onsen and looks toward the Daiya River and surrounding forest. Large windows bring the riverside scenery into the bathing area while you soak.

The bath is used privately by one group at a time. When it is available, you can enter with your partner, family, or travel companions and enjoy the space without sharing it with anyone else.

This private-use arrangement makes it easy to relax after climbing shrine steps, exploring Kanmangafuchi Abyss, or walking from central Nikko. The warm water feels especially inviting during the colder months.

Guests with tattoos

Tattoos are accepted in the private-use hot spring bath. You can enjoy the bath with your own group without covering your tattoos.

Facilities

Free Wi-Fi, complimentary parking, luggage storage, laundry facilities, and a drinks vending machine support a practical stay. The dining and common areas give you space to sit before heading out or to review your plans for the following day.

English assistance is available, which makes transport questions and local sightseeing easier to manage. The inn does not offer bicycle rental, so walking, local buses, taxis, and your own car are the main ways to explore the area.

Activities

Kanmangafuchi Abyss is one of the closest attractions. Its riverside path follows the Daiya River past a long line of stone Jizo statues, creating a quiet walk through the forest.

The World Heritage shrines and temples are about 20 minutes away on foot. You can visit Toshogu Shrine, Rinnoji Temple, Futarasan Shrine, and Taiyuin before continuing toward Shinkyo Bridge.

Nikko Tamozawa Imperial Villa Memorial Park is also nearby. The preserved residence combines architecture from several periods of Japanese history and includes a garden that changes with the seasons.

For a longer day out, take a bus into Oku-Nikko for Lake Chuzenji, Kegon Falls, Senjogahara Marshland, and the mountain landscapes of Nikko National Park.

Additional features

The inn offers 11 Japanese-style rooms, private bathrooms, free Wi-Fi, an optional continental breakfast, a private-use panoramic hot spring bath, laundry facilities, luggage storage, a vending machine, and complimentary parking. From JR Nikko Station or Tobu-Nikko Station, take a bus toward Toshogu Shrine or Lake Chuzenji to Sogo Kaikan-mae, then continue to the inn on foot. Pets are not accepted.
