Overview

Stay beside the Toyosawa River at Yunomori Hotel Shidotaira, a large hot spring resort surrounded by the wooded mountains of Hanamaki. The sound of the river follows you through the bathing areas, lounge, and stream-facing rooms, while the forest changes from fresh spring green to autumn colour and winter snow.

You can spend an entire day inside the resort. Three natural spring sources supply a large collection of indoor and outdoor baths, two distinctive saunas give you different heat experiences, and Live×Buffet Hikari no Mori serves more than 100 dinner dishes through live cooking stations.

The atmosphere works especially well for a family trip, but you can also find quieter spaces. Choose a river-view room, sit with coffee in the panoramic lounge, reserve a private bath, or book a massage after your onsen session.

Accommodation

You can choose from contemporary Japanese-Western rooms, stream-view rooms, traditional tatami accommodation, compact business rooms, and dedicated Welcome Baby categories. Every room is non-smoking.

The 82-square-metre Keiryu Suite gives you one of the strongest river and forest views. Its two connected sleeping areas each contain two Simmons semi-double beds, giving you four permanent beds without relying on futons.

The 52-square-metre Excellent Room faces the mountains. One area has two semi-double beds, while the adjoining room has two single beds. This layout makes it easier to share the room while keeping separate sleeping spaces.

The 41-square-metre Keiryu View Room uses wide windows to frame the water and trees. Two Simmons semi-double beds and soft Nordic-inspired interiors create a bright, uncluttered setting.

An accessible Keiryu View Twin removes the main floor level changes and adds a slope at the entrance. You can move more easily between the doorway, sleeping area, and living space when you use a wheelchair or prefer fewer steps.

The Keiryu Natural rooms opened in December 2022. The twin layout includes two Simmons semi-double beds, while the triple layout has three beds. Both measure 41 square metres and place the river and forest directly outside the large window.

The 45-square-metre Deluxe Room combines two Simmons beds with a Ryukyu-tatami sitting area. Additional futons can be placed on the tatami when you share the room with more people.

The 32-square-metre Superior Room faces the mountains and suits a shorter stay or time together as a couple. Two beds are provided, with an additional futon available on the tatami when needed.

Welcome Baby accommodation includes a Keiryu Natural room with three beds placed together in a Hollywood-style arrangement and a 12.5-tatami room in the Kashokan Wing. These rooms include equipment such as a diaper bin, child’s toilet seat, step stool, bottle-preparation items, corner guards, picture books, and selected diapers.

Traditional choices include a ten-tatami stream-view room, a 12.5-tatami room, a larger two-room layout with ten and eight tatami mats, and simpler Japanese rooms. Japanese-Western categories combine tatami with twin beds and can accommodate additional futons.

Compact single and twin Western rooms are available when you need a straightforward base for business or solo travel.

Your room includes a yukata, bath and face towels, tabi socks, a toothbrush, a bathing basket, and basic room equipment. Bathroom layouts differ between categories. Natural spring bathing takes place in the shared or reservable bathing areas rather than inside the accommodation.

Dining

Dinner is served at Live×Buffet Hikari no Mori, an entertainment-style buffet restaurant built around a large central tree and several live cooking stations.

More than 100 dishes bring together seasonal produce, seafood, meat, vegetables, noodles, rice, soups, bread, and desserts. Chefs grill, carve, cook, and finish selected dishes in front of you, so you can collect them while they are hot.

The menu changes with the season and regularly highlights food from Iwate. Local beer, wine, and sake are available separately, while soft drinks are included with the buffet.

The MORI×MORI Kids Corner places familiar children’s dishes on a lower counter that is easier for younger diners to reach. The family dining section also includes a playroom, allowing children to move to a nearby activity space after finishing their meal.

Baby chairs, tableware, paper bibs, strollers, and baby racks are available in the restaurant. Prepared baby food is provided, and brought-in baby meals can be warmed on request. A nursing room is located on the third floor.

Breakfast returns to Hikari no Mori for a Japanese and Western buffet with around 60 dishes. Freshly baked croissants, bread, made-to-order omelettes, tomato smoothies, rice, soup, vegetables, and warm breakfast dishes allow you to build a light or filling morning meal.

Onsen and Wellness

Three natural sources supply Hotel Shidotaira’s bathing facilities. Current analyses place the sources between pH 7.9 and 8.3, so the water ranges from neutral to mildly alkaline rather than strongly alkaline.

Two sources are sodium sulfate and chloride springs, while the third is classified as a simple hot spring. Source temperatures range from approximately 62.6°C to 78.6°C, so the water requires temperature control before you enter the baths.

Traditional bathing indications include muscle and joint discomfort, neuralgia, sensitivity to cold, fatigue, minor cuts, and general recovery after physical activity.

Tenkawa no Yu centres on a 25-metre panoramic bath facing the river and mountains. Large indoor and outdoor bathing areas let you watch the forest and flowing water while moving between different tub depths and temperatures.

The Lava Sauna uses lava stone from Mount Iwate together with a METOS iki heater. The large stone capacity supports powerful löyly sessions, filling the room with heat and steam.

Hidakami no Yu spreads across a two-level atrium. You can move between a hiba-wood bath, a stream-view semi-open-air bath, ceramic tubs, and other bathing areas without leaving the main complex.

Behind the rockwork in Hidakami no Yu, the Cave Sauna creates a darker Finnish-style sauna experience. You can perform self-löyly by pouring water over the heated stones, then cool down close to the sound and air of the river.

Tenkawa no Yu and Hidakami no Yu alternate between men and women according to odd and even calendar dates. The shared baths normally operate from 11:00 until 1:00 and again from 5:00 until 9:30, with a cleaning break between the late-night and morning sessions.

Three reservable baths give you a private alternative. Kogane no Yu includes an indoor tub and a rock-built open-air bath. The other choices provide a ceramic bath or a hiba-wood bath. Reception for private bathing normally runs from 11:30 until 21:00, with the final session beginning earlier.

The private-bath area involves stairs. A stair lift is available when you need help reaching it, so arrange assistance with the front desk.

Aromatherapy treatments, facial care, body treatments, massage, head care, and foot reflexology are available in the relaxation salon. Advance booking is recommended.

Guests with Tattoos

You can use the shared baths when every tattoo is fully concealed by a cover seal. The accepted size is approximately 10 by 10 centimetres.

Do not enter Tenkawa no Yu, Hidakami no Yu, either sauna, or the shared changing areas when any part of a tattoo remains visible.

Reserve one of the three private baths when your tattoos cannot be completely covered. These baths allow you to enjoy the hot spring without entering the communal facilities.

Facilities

The Keiryu Lounge faces the Toyosawa River through wide glass windows. You can enjoy freshly ground coffee, tea, cocoa, soft drinks, and seasonal soft-serve ice cream while watching the forest and water.

After dinner, the lounge changes into a relaxed bar space. Local wine, fruit liqueurs, and whisky are served while the illuminated river remains visible beyond the windows.

Hill Square and Asobi no Mori give you indoor places to play and rest. Hanamaki Toy Museum helped design the wooden play area, which includes pretend-play equipment, picture books, and toys made to encourage open-ended play.

A separate Baby Square opened inside Hill Square in December 2025. Its wood-floored area is reserved for children aged zero to one and remains separate from the more active play spaces.

Gachamon no Mori uses Iwate timber and locally connected designs to turn capsule-toy machines into a forest-themed attraction. The souvenir shop Sora Shido sells regional food, sweets, drinks, and keepsakes and also handles parcel delivery.

An indoor heated pool operates on selected weekends, public holidays, and school-break dates. The outdoor pool and water slide open during the summer season, subject to the operating calendar and weather. You need to bring your own swimwear and flotation equipment.

Wanwan-kan is a separate accommodation facility for dogs rather than a pet-friendly room inside the main hotel. Small and medium dogs stay in climate-controlled stainless-steel kennels, and you can check the kennel camera from your phone. Dogs cannot enter the main building unless they are recognised assistance animals, and cats cannot use Wanwan-kan.

Table tennis, colourful yukata rental, vending machines, EV charging, and complimentary Wi-Fi are also available.

Activities

Join the bread-making workshop to shape and decorate your own bread with fillings and toppings such as bean paste, cheese, sesame, and poppy seeds. The hands-on stage normally takes between ten and 30 minutes, followed by around one hour for baking. Reserve by the stated deadline two days before the activity.

The Wooden Toy Plaza takes place daily in Hill Square and Asobi no Mori. You can try toys selected with help from Hanamaki Toy Museum, while staff explain different ways to play. This is an activity area rather than a childcare service.

Spend time in the indoor pool on scheduled operating days or use the outdoor pool and long water slide during summer. Opening dates, weather rules, and slide restrictions should be checked before your visit.

You can also play table tennis, explore Gachamon no Mori, borrow games for your room, or join changing seasonal programmes such as treasure hunts and limited hotel tours.

For an outing in Hanamaki, use the resort as a base for visiting sites connected with writer Kenji Miyazawa, local craft and toy attractions, wineries, farms, and the wider Hanamaki hot spring area.

Additional Features

Check-in normally begins at 15:00, with arrival by 19:00 when required by your meal plan. Check-out is by 10:00.

Complimentary parking is available for approximately 300 vehicles. EV charging equipment is installed in the parking area.

A shared shuttle connects Shin-Hanamaki Station and Hanamaki Station with the resort. Reserve the inbound journey at least three days before arrival and arrange your return journey at check-in. A transport contribution applies from September 2026.
