Overview

Travel deep into Oku-Kinu and discover Hatcho-no-Yu, a secluded mountain ryokan surrounded by old-growth forest inside Nikko National Park. At around 1,300 metres above sea level, this historic retreat gives you a rare chance to leave roads, city lights, and everyday routines behind.

The journey forms part of the experience. Private vehicles cannot continue beyond Meotobuchi, so you reach the ryokan by reserved shuttle or follow a 90-minute forest trail beside the upper Kinugawa River. Once you arrive, natural waterfalls, free-flowing hot springs, Canadian-style log houses, and the character of the original mountain lodge welcome you into a slower rhythm.

Hatcho-no-Yu first opened in 1929. You can still feel its history in the old wooden buildings, lantern-like lighting, and outdoor baths that have drawn travellers into the mountains for generations.

Accommodation

Choose between the comfort of Villa Lodge Hatcho and the simple mountain character of the original main lodge. The property has 27 non-smoking rooms, with free Wi-Fi available throughout.

The 61.6-square-metre Luxury Room includes a living area, separate bedroom, kitchenette, refrigerator, microwave, private indoor bath, and a private open-air bath filled with free-flowing natural onsen water. Its broad wooden deck gives you a peaceful place to listen to the forest between soaks.

The 21-square-metre Twin Room with Open-Air Bath also includes its own source-fed outdoor onsen, along with two single beds, a sofa bed, shower, washbasin, and private toilet. These two bath-equipped categories give you the freedom to enjoy the spring in complete privacy.

The Log House Loft Room combines a 20-tatami living and sleeping area with a six-tatami loft. Twin beds, a sofa bed, and futons provide flexible sleeping arrangements, while the high ceiling and thick log walls create the feeling of a private woodland cabin.

Standard Log House Twin Rooms measure 21 square metres and include twin beds, a sofa bed, washbasin, and private toilet. The ten-tatami Log House Japanese Rooms give you a traditional floor-level space with futon bedding.

For a simpler stay, choose an eight-tatami room in the original main lodge. These rooms preserve the straightforward style of a classic Japanese mountain inn and use shared washbasins and toilets on the first floor.

Rooms have heating but no air conditioning. The highland climate usually remains cool during summer. Most categories do not include a refrigerator, so select the Luxury Room when kitchen facilities and cold storage are important.

Dining

Meals draw their character from the mountains. Spring water is used throughout the kitchen, while seasonal vegetables, wild plants, river fish, game, and produce from the property’s own farm bring the landscape onto your table.

When you stay in a log house, dinner follows the Koufuku Kaiseki style. The chefs turn local and seasonal ingredients into a carefully paced Japanese course, with presentation and flavours changing throughout the year. Current specialities include carp raised in the clear waters of the Nikko mountains, prepared as a light, crisp tempura.

When you stay in the original main lodge, dinner offers a more informal mountain set meal. Appetisers, grilled dishes, a main course, and dessert give you a satisfying evening meal without losing the simple character of the accommodation.

Breakfast may include a steaming tabletop pot, seasonal vegetables, an onsen egg, and small dishes arranged in traditional boxes. Service begins at 7:30 AM. When you need to leave early for a long hike, breakfast can be changed to a packed meal.

Meals are served in shared dining rooms. Koufukutei provides a spacious setting for log-house stays, while Yamagoyatei retains the atmosphere of an older Japanese dining hall. Vegan meals can also be prepared when arranged at least one week before arrival.

Onsen and Wellness

The hot spring is the heart of Hatcho-no-Yu. Water rises naturally beside the outdoor baths and flows directly into the bathing areas. It is neither reheated nor filtered, allowing you to experience the natural mineral deposits and character of the source.

The spring is classified as a neutral, hypotonic high-temperature onsen. Its gentle composition makes it comfortable for a slow soak after walking through the forest or climbing toward the highland marshes.

Three mixed-gender outdoor baths sit beside the waterfall. Yukimi-no-Yu dates from the ryokan’s opening in 1929 and offers an especially atmospheric soak when snow gathers around the water. Takimi-no-Yu faces the waterfall directly, while Shakunage-no-Yu sits higher on the rocks for a more dramatic view.

Sawagani-no-Yu is an outdoor bath with alternating access. It is reserved for women from 10:00 AM to 9:00 PM and for men from 10:00 PM to 10:00 AM. Separate indoor baths are also available for men and women from 2:00 PM to 8:00 AM.

The main outdoor baths remain open for most of the day and night outside scheduled cleaning periods. From 9:00 PM to 10:00 PM, the three mixed outdoor baths become women-only. You may enter the mixed baths wrapped in a bathing towel, and suitable towels are available from the ryokan. Avoid using dark-coloured personal towels because the minerals may affect the dye.

There is no reservable private bath. For completely private natural onsen bathing, choose the Luxury Room or Twin Room with Open-Air Bath.

Guests with Tattoos

You can use the mixed outdoor baths, alternating outdoor bath, and gender-separated indoor baths if you have tattoos. You do not need to cover them.

The private open-air onsen rooms also allow you to enjoy the spring entirely within your own accommodation.

Facilities

The main lodge holds the front desk and a waiting area beside a wood-burning stove. Warm, carefully chosen lighting recalls the years before electricity reached the ryokan in 1988 and helps preserve the atmosphere of a traditional mountain retreat after dark.

The café serves freshly ground coffee, light food, local beer, regional cider, sake, and wine. In the evening, it becomes a relaxed mountain bar. You can use the café area throughout the night during your stay.

The shop carries Nikko products, drinks, snacks, and original Hatcho-no-Yu items. A shared lounge between the main lodge and log houses includes table tennis, while outdoor seating lets you enjoy the forest during warmer months.

All rooms include a television, electric kettle, yukata, hanten jacket, towels, toothbrushes, and basic bathing products. Hairdryers are placed in log-house rooms and shared wash areas. Pets cannot enter the property.

Activities

The 90-minute trail from Meotobuchi to Hatcho-no-Yu follows the upper Kinugawa River through forest, past waterfalls, and across bridges. The route suits newer hikers, but you still need sturdy walking shoes and clothing for sudden weather changes.

For a more demanding day, climb from the ryokan to Kinunuma Marsh. Set at an elevation of around 2,020 metres, this highland wetland is regarded as one of Japan’s highest. Allow around six to seven hours for the return journey, including time to rest and explore the boardwalk. The route includes long, steep sections and a climb of roughly 600 metres.

The Kinugawa headwaters in front of the ryokan provide fishing for iwana and yamame from spring to early autumn. Permits are available at reception. Managed fishing areas farther down the mountain offer equipment rental and the chance to have your catch prepared on-site.

Winter brings guided snowshoe walks, evening snow-light tours, and electric snow-bike experiences through the forest. Proper winter clothing and footwear are essential.

Selected evenings also include hand-towel workshops and short story readings beside the lounge. These small activities add a personal touch to quiet nights in the mountains.

Additional Features

Check-in begins at 2:00 PM, and check-out is by 10:00 AM. You can store luggage before check-in and after checkout.

Private vehicles, motorcycles, and taxis cannot travel beyond the Meotobuchi parking area. A complimentary shuttle connects the parking area with the ryokan and must be reserved in advance. The drive takes around 30 minutes.

You can also reach Hatcho-no-Yu on foot from Meotobuchi. During winter, the trail requires suitable mountain equipment, and roads leading to the parking area normally require winter tyres or chains from November through late April.

With source-fed waterfall baths, tattoo-friendly bathing, private onsen rooms, woodland cabins, mountain cuisine, and trails beginning outside the door, Hatcho-no-Yu gives you an Oku-Kinu experience that feels genuinely removed from everyday life.
