Overview
Hotel The Mitsui Kyoto sits right in the heart of Kyoto, directly next to Nijo Castle, one of Japan’s UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The land itself carries over 250 years of history — this was once the Kyoto home of the Kitake, the executive branch of the powerful Mitsui family. When you walk through the property’s 300-year-old Kajiimiya Gate, beautifully restored by traditional carpentry specialists, you feel that history immediately.
This is not just a well-located hotel. It holds the Michelin Three Key distinction for 2025, appears on The World’s 50 Best Hotels 2025 list, earned a spot on the Condé Nast Traveler 2024 Gold List, and has maintained a Forbes Travel Guide five-star rating every year since it opened — including a separate five-star rating for its Thermal Spring Spa in 2026.
Accommodation
Every one of the 160 rooms and suites draws its design language from the traditional Japanese tearoom — calm, considered, and built around natural materials shaped by skilled artisans. The stone bathtubs are a signature detail: deep, generous, and made for a long soak. You choose from five room types and six suite categories.
Among the rooms, the Garden Room (47–61m²) looks directly onto the hotel’s 1,300m² Japanese garden, so the view shifts beautifully with each season. The Nijo Room (50m²) faces the castle itself — you can see the historic East Main Entrance Gate and the corner watchtower from your window, glowing at night when the walls are lit up.
The suites step things up considerably. The Garden Suite (95–97m²) pairs generous space with garden views. The Nijo Suite (112m²) gives you a front-row seat to Nijo Castle from two large windows — one of the more striking views you’ll find in any hotel in Japan. The Onsen Suite (101–111m²) is in a category of its own: over 100 square metres of space with sakura cherry wood finishes, separate living and bedroom areas, and a private outdoor bath fed directly by natural spring water sourced on-site. From the bath, you look out onto a landscaped tsubo-niwa garden with stone lanterns. At the very top sits the Presidential Suite (213m²), the largest in the hotel, with sweeping Kyoto views and a level of space and privacy that’s hard to match anywhere in the city.
All rooms include 24-hour room service (available 7:00 AM to 10:30 PM), turndown service, a pillow menu, free Wi-Fi, Imabari superior Pima cotton towels, original bathroom products created by a Japanese master perfumer, bath salts, a Bose Bluetooth speaker, and a 65″ LCD TV with a bathroom screen.
Please note the minimum age to stay is 10 years old.
Dining
Four dining spaces sit around the hotel’s central garden, each with its own character.
TOKI is where the hotel’s culinary ambition is most visible. Chef Tetsuya Asano leads an innovative Kyoto-French menu built around a “fond” — a stock made using Kyoto’s natural waters — that forms the base of every dish. Seasonal ingredients from Kyoto and beyond shape what lands on your plate. Chef Asano has been selected as Japan’s representative at the Bocuse d’Or International Culinary Competition 2027, and TOKI holds a Michelin award.
FORNI brings Italian cooking to a Japanese setting, with wood-oven pizzas, grill dishes, and a menu that follows the 24 micro-seasons of the traditional lunisolar calendar. This is also where breakfast happens: you can choose between a buffet of the chef’s specialties with hot dishes straight from the kitchen, or a traditional Kyoto-style Japanese breakfast presented in an elegant oju box.
The Garden Bar is the place to wind down. As the sun sets over the garden, you can settle in for handcrafted cocktails, afternoon tea, or seasonal drinks in a relaxed, quietly elegant atmosphere.
SHIKI-NO-MA is something altogether different. It’s a faithful reconstruction of the original heart of the Mitsui family home, built from Japanese cypress, and it’s used for tea ceremonies and exclusive private dining events. Being in this space feels genuinely connected to the history of the site.
Onsen and Wellness
Beneath the hotel, natural spring water rises from approximately 1,000 metres underground. That water feeds the entire Thermal Spring Spa — a Forbes Travel Guide five-star rated facility in 2026 — and it shapes the wellness experience here in a way that goes well beyond a standard hotel spa.
The Thermal Spring is the communal bathing space, where you soak in natural hot spring water in swimwear. It’s open to ages 13 and above, with a dedicated kids’ hour from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM for ages 4 to 12, accompanied by a guardian.
If you prefer complete privacy, the Private Onsen is a self-contained space with a living room, relaxation area, and a private garden — all reserved exclusively for you. You can also book it as part of the Meditation Yoga in Private Onsen experience: 60 minutes of guided yoga followed by 90 minutes of private bathing.
Beyond the baths, the spa offers a full treatment menu with body treatments using original massage oils developed specifically for this hotel. A fully equipped gym rounds out the wellness offering.
Guests with Tattoos
If you have tattoos, the hotel may ask you to cover them before entering the Thermal Spring and the gym. It’s worth flagging this when you book so you can plan ahead. If privacy is a concern, the Private Onsen and the Onsen Suite’s outdoor bath are both exclusively yours when booked, so there are no restrictions in those spaces.
Facilities
The Kajiimiya Gate: Over 300 years old and fully restored, this is the entrance to the hotel grounds. Walking through it marks a clear shift from the street outside.
The Central Garden: 1,300 square metres designed by landscape architect Shunsaku Miyagi, based on the original Mitsui family garden. Many of the stone lanterns and garden features are original artifacts from the estate. It changes with every season and serves as a space for meditation, yoga, and quiet walks.
SHIKI-NO-MA: The reconstructed Mitsui family room, built from Japanese cypress, used for tea ceremonies and private dining.
CHAKYO Tea Ceremony Alcove: The in-hotel space for tea ceremony, overseen by So’oku Sen, heir apparent to the headmaster of Mushakouji Senke — one of the three great Houses of Sen that trace back to Sen Rikyu, the defining figure of Japanese tea culture.
Thermal Spring Spa: Natural hot spring bathing, private onsen, spa treatments, and a fully equipped gym. Five-star rated by Forbes Travel Guide 2026.
The Shop: A carefully chosen selection of products that reflect the hotel’s philosophy — Japanese traditional culture, craftsmanship, and food, including pastries made in-house.
Activities
Private Tour of Nijo Castle (Shogun’s Gateway): A guided morning or evening tour of the World Heritage site, including restricted areas such as the Ninomaru-goten Palace and the historic kitchen. A dedicated historian leads the way, starting from the majestic Karamon Gate. One group per day, up to eight people.
Private Early Morning Tour of Kiyomizu-dera: An exclusive pre-opening visit to this UNESCO World Heritage temple, led by steward and priest Shoin Onishi. You’ll access the Hozoden — normally closed to the public — to see treasured Buddhist statues and cultural artifacts in total stillness. One group per day, maximum four people.
TOKINOHA Ceramics Experience: A visit to the studio of master craftsman Daisuke Shimizu, where you can commission a custom Kiyomizu pottery piece or try kintsugi — the Japanese art of repairing pottery with gold and lacquer. Exclusively available to hotel guests, with reservations required at least seven days in advance.
CHAKYO Tea Ceremony: A ryurei-style seated tea ceremony performed by hotel ambassadors trained by a Mushakouji Senke tea master. Around 25 minutes, available daily.
Wellness Breathing: A complimentary morning breathing session on the engawa garden-viewing corridor of SHIKI-NO-MA, led by an instructor. Around 40 minutes, open to ages 13 and above.
Meditation Yoga in Private Onsen: A 150-minute private session combining guided yoga (60 minutes) with private onsen bathing (90 minutes).
