Overview
Keiryu-so Shiorie is a small hot spring ryokan in Sawando Onsen, Matsumoto, set at the gateway to Kamikochi and the Northern Alps. With only eight rooms, private-feeling bath spaces, and meals served in individual dining rooms, the stay feels quiet, personal, and easy to enjoy at your own pace.
You stay in the middle of mountain scenery, close to the Azusa River and within easy reach of Kamikochi, Norikura Kogen, Okuhida, Matsumoto, and Takayama. After walking, sightseeing, or traveling between Nagano and Gifu, you can return to warm wood interiors, soft hot spring water, and the gentle pace of a small ryokan.
Accommodation
Keiryu-so Shiorie offers eight rooms, each designed with a calm Japanese feel and thoughtful in-room details. Every room includes a high-function massage chair and a Dyson hairdryer, so you can loosen your body after walking in Kamikochi or Norikura and enjoy a little extra comfort after bathing. Rooms also include Wi-Fi, a refrigerator, kettle, coffee carafe, safe, air purifier, and basic bath amenities.
On the first floor, you can choose rooms with private open-air hot spring baths and terraces. These rooms let you enjoy 100% source-flowing Sawando Onsen in your own space, 24 hours a day. The siorie Suite is the property’s highest-grade room, with a Western-style layout, beds, terrace, open-air bath, and shower booth. The first-floor Japanese-style rooms also include private open-air baths and terraces, giving you a traditional tatami stay with the pleasure of bathing whenever you like. The room baths do not have washing areas, so use the shared washing facilities before soaking and avoid soap or shampoo in the open-air bath to protect the river environment.
On the second floor, the Seiryu Suites include private footbath terraces facing the Azusa River. You can sit outside, warm your feet in Sawando Onsen water, read, talk, or enjoy the mountain air without leaving your room. The second-floor Ryukyu tatami Japanese-style rooms also face the Azusa River and give you a clean, simple room with a close connection to the sound of the stream. These rooms do not have in-room baths, so you can enjoy the ryokan’s shared and reservable hot spring baths instead.
Dining
Dinner at Keiryu-so Shiorie is creative Japanese kaiseki made with seasonal ingredients from Shinshu and the surrounding mountain region. Each dish is served one by one in a private-style dining room, so you can enjoy the meal slowly without feeling rushed. The cooking focuses on the season, with warm dishes served warm and each plate prepared with care.
Breakfast is a Japanese morning meal built around freshly cooked rice. The rice comes from a local contracted farmer in Matsumoto and is cooked in an individual clay pot for each room’s breakfast time. Side dishes take inspiration from Shinshu and Hida local cooking, giving you a warm and balanced start before sightseeing or hiking.
If you plan to leave early for Kamikochi, breakfast can be changed to a handmade bento with advance request. Allergy requests can be handled as much as safely possible when shared at least three days before your stay, but disliked ingredients and preference-based changes cannot be arranged.
Onsen and Wellness
Keiryu-so Shiorie uses Sawando Onsen, a natural hot spring nurtured by the Northern Alps. The water feels gentle on the skin and warms the body well, making it especially pleasant after trekking, sightseeing, winter activity, or a long day of travel.
The ryokan has several ways to enjoy the hot spring. The large rock bath is usually used as a gender-separated bath, and from 23:00 to 5:00 it switches to private use, so you can lock the door and enjoy the spacious bath on your own. The tatami-floor indoor bath has a soft floor that feels warm underfoot and helps prevent slipping. Large windows can be opened to create a half-open-air feeling. This bath can be reserved for 45 minutes from 15:00 to 23:00 and from 5:45 to 10:00, and late at night it can be used freely when available.
The first-floor rooms have private open-air baths with 100% source-flowing hot spring water. These baths are available at any time during your stay, so you can soak in the morning, after dinner, or late at night without leaving your room. The second-floor Seiryu Suites have private footbath terraces, letting you enjoy the same hot spring water in a lighter, more casual way while looking toward the river.
Guests with Tattoos
If you have tattoos, use the private bathing options rather than the shared gender-separated bathing times. The first-floor rooms have private open-air hot spring baths, the Seiryu Suites have private footbath terraces, the tatami indoor bath can be reserved, and the large rock bath becomes private-use from 23:00 to 5:00. These options let you enjoy Sawando Onsen with privacy and comfort.
Facilities
Keiryu-so Shiorie has a lobby with seasonal flowers, a bookshelf with picture books, novels, and travel magazines, an amenity bar, a small shop with sweets and light snacks, free Wi-Fi throughout the property, samue and yukata, shared hot spring baths, reservable private bath spaces, individual-style dining rooms, and parking. The building has fewer steps than many traditional inns, and handrails are placed through the property to support easier movement. Smoking is not allowed inside the building or rooms, and smoking spaces are set outside near the entrance and on the second-floor balcony.
Activities
Keiryu-so Shiorie is especially convenient if you want to visit Kamikochi. Sawando Bus Terminal is within walking distance, and buses connect Sawando with Kamikochi during the open season. You can also use the property’s parking before check-in and after check-out on those days, making it easier to leave your car and head into the mountains.
You can also explore Norikura Kogen, Okuhida Onsenkyo, Matsumoto, Takayama, and Azumino from this location. Norikura Kogen and Okuhida are close by car, while Matsumoto and Takayama are both good options for a longer day out. This makes the ryokan a strong base if you want to combine hot spring bathing with mountain walks, river scenery, old town streets, and classic Shinshu and Hida sightseeing.
Additional Features
Keiryu-so Shiorie includes free Wi-Fi, free parking, check-in from 15:00, check-out at 11:00, luggage storage outside normal check-in and check-out hours, and parking support for Kamikochi sightseeing on your arrival and departure days. The ryokan is about 50 minutes by car from Matsumoto Interchange and about 70 minutes by car from Takayama Interchange. By public transport, you can reach Sawando Bus Terminal from Matsumoto Bus Terminal or Takayama Nohi Bus Center, then continue on foot or by local access. With only eight rooms, private-feeling hot spring options, individual-style dining, and easy access to Kamikochi, this ryokan gives you a restful mountain stay between Matsumoto and Hida Takayama.
