Overview

Konjakutei is a traditional riverside ryokan in Aizu Higashiyama Onsen, Fukushima. You stay beside the Yukawa stream in one of Aizu’s historic hot spring areas, with quiet valley views, Japanese rooms, source-flowing baths, and seasonal Japanese cuisine. Higashiyama Onsen has around 1,300 years of history and is said to have been discovered by the monk Gyoki.

This ryokan works well when you want a smaller, food-focused stay rather than a large resort. You can soak in Konjakutei’s own hot spring source, choose a room with a private source-flowing bath, enjoy dinner in your room or a private dining space, and also use the baths at sister property Harataki, about a 3-minute walk away.

Accommodation

You can choose from Japanese-style rooms, Japanese-Western rooms, single rooms, and rooms with private source-flowing hot spring baths. The private onsen room types include an observation bath room, an open-air bath room, and a Japanese room with a source-flowing indoor bath. All rooms are non-smoking, including electronic cigarettes, with a smoking space on the first floor.

The observation bath room has a 12-tatami Japanese layout and a private bath using Konjakutei’s own source-flowing hot spring water. The bath comes in two styles: Aomori hiba wood or stone. From the bath window, you can look toward a small tsuboniwa garden and enjoy a private soak at your own pace.

The open-air bath room has a 10-tatami Japanese room, an additional 4.5-tatami space, and a private source-flowing open-air bath. Bath styles include Aomori hiba wood and Shigaraki ware. This room suits you when you want the most private bathing experience without leaving your room.

The Japanese room with a source-flowing bath has a 10-tatami layout facing the valley. Its Western-style bathtub uses hot spring water, and the bath window looks toward the seasonal greenery of the ravine. Standard 10-tatami Japanese rooms also face the valley, with wide shoji screens and views toward the stream below.

The Japanese-Western room combines a 10-tatami Japanese room with a twin bedroom, giving you tatami space and beds in one layout. The single room faces the stream side and works well for solo stays or business use. Room equipment includes bath, warm-water washing toilet, refrigerator, heating and cooling, kettle, and air purifier. Room items include yukata, towels, bath towels, hair dryer, shampoo, rinse, body soap, soap, skincare items, and grooming items.

Dining

Dinner is a Japanese kaiseki-style meal built around seasonal ingredients. The chef selects ingredients each day, so the exact menu changes with the season and supply. Meals may include selected wagyu prepared as shabu-shabu, sukiyaki, or stone-grilled beef, plus seafood brought from Toyosu, sashimi, grilled dishes, and Aizu local flavors.

Aizu regional dishes may appear in the meal, including kozuyu, a local soup made with dried scallop broth, mamefu, vegetables, mushrooms, ginkgo, and other ingredients. Another Aizu specialty is herring pickled with sansho leaves, a dish linked to the inland food culture of the region.

You usually dine either in your room or in a private dining room, depending on the day, plan, and group size. You cannot always choose the exact dining location, but both styles keep the meal quiet and personal. Allergy requests should be discussed at least 3 days in advance, and same-day changes may not be possible.

Breakfast is a Japanese-style ryokan breakfast with Aizu-grown Koshihikari rice, grilled seasonal fish, local vegetables, simmered dishes, and a balanced morning spread. It is designed to feel gentle, warm, and satisfying before sightseeing or another bath.

From late spring to early autumn, you can also enjoy Kawadoko, a waterside dining space beside the Yukawa stream. Dinner at Kawadoko is by advance reservation and features a limited seasonal kaiseki meal, with options centered on Fukushima black wagyu charcoal grill or Aizu jidori chicken charcoal grill. The space also has a natural source-flowing footbath during its open season.

Onsen and Wellness

Konjakutei has its own hot spring source, which is rare within Higashiyama Onsen. The indoor bath is not large, but the focus is fresh source-flowing water, the sound of the stream, and views of the valley outside the windows.

You can also enjoy private source-flowing hot spring water in selected rooms. The observation bath room, open-air bath room, and source-flowing bath room all use Konjakutei’s own hot spring source, giving you private bathing without needing to use the shared bath.

For a larger bath experience, you can walk to sister property Harataki. When you stay at Konjakutei, you can use Harataki’s large public bath and open-air bath, about 3 minutes away on foot.

Guests with Tattoos

If you have tattoos, you cannot use Konjakutei’s large public bath or open-air bath facilities as a standard rule. However, Konjakutei allows foreign visitors with tattoos for fashion, cultural, or religious reasons to use the large public bath after confirming they are not connected to antisocial organizations. For the smoothest stay, confirm the current rule before arrival. A room with a private source-flowing bath gives you the easiest way to enjoy the hot spring with privacy.

Facilities

Konjakutei keeps the facilities focused on quiet ryokan time. The lobby and tea lounge look toward Aizu’s natural scenery, and you can enjoy coffee or tea there during service hours. The shop carries Aizu lacquerware and selected souvenirs, while the women-only colorful yukata corner lets you choose a more personal look for your stay.

You can also use a meeting room by advance reservation, request massage, rent go or shogi sets, arrange courier service, request a wheelchair in advance when available, and ask for taxi support. Aizu Higashiyama geigi entertainment can also be arranged in advance when you want a more cultural evening.

Wi-Fi is available across the building, including the rooms, lobby, and café area, with optical-line internet used for better stability. The ryokan also has a free shuttle from nearby bus stops such as Aizu Higashiyama Onsen Station and Aizu Bukeyashiki after arrival contact, plus one parking space with a 200V outlet for EV charging when used with the required cable and app.

Activities

You can keep your stay simple with baths, room time, kaiseki dining, Kawadoko dining in season, and short walks along the stream. The ryokan’s quiet valley setting makes it easy to enjoy Aizu without filling every hour with sightseeing.

For sightseeing, you can visit Tsuruga Castle, Iimoriyama, Aizu Bukeyashiki, Oyakuen Garden, Sazaedo, Nanukamachi Street, and local sake breweries. Tsuruga Castle is about 10 minutes away by car, and Iimoriyama is also about 10 minutes away by car.

You can also plan wider Aizu outings to Kitakata for ramen and kura storehouse streets, Lake Inawashiro, Urabandai, Goshikinuma, or local sake spots such as Nagurayama Brewery.
