Overview
Step inside a 150-year-old farmhouse and enjoy the freedom of having the property to yourself at Kominka Yuzuki. Carefully restored clay walls, white plaster, exposed beams, tatami, and traditional woodwork preserve the character of rural Toyama, while the private kitchen, projector, workspace, and hot spring bath make it easy to settle in.
Kominka Yuzuki reopened in April 2022 following a major renovation, with its private hot spring bathing area added in August of the same year. You can cook together, gather around a barbecue, watch films on a large plaster screen, or prepare your own bath with mineral-rich source water from the Shogawa area.
Only one booking uses the property at a time, giving you privacy across the main living spaces, bedrooms, bath, traditional storehouse, and renovated workshop.
Accommodation
You have two bedrooms on the first floor of the main house. Both combine wooden flooring, tatami, futon bedding, and original architectural details that reveal the age and history of the building.
Akane Room retains an original pillar that could not be removed during the renovation. The floor is arranged with semi-double futons, while an additional single futon can be placed on the tatami. A low table, mirror, hangers, and remote-controlled lighting complete the simple layout.
Aoi Room takes inspiration from a traditional tea room and reuses shoji panels from the former study. Curved wooden beams remain visible overhead, while an ensō-style circular window brings a distinctive Zen detail to the room. Semi-double and single futons are arranged across the wooden and tatami areas.
The high-ceilinged living room follows the traditional Wakunouchi construction style found in old Toyama farmhouses. Thick beams frame the open space, while the original clay walls help manage temperature and humidity. A tatami engawa runs beside the windows, allowing you to step directly into the garden.
You can use the first floor of the main house, where the bedrooms, kitchen, living room, and bathing areas are located. The upper floor is not included in the stay.
Dining
Standard stays give you the freedom to arrange your own meals. You can use the kitchen, bring ingredients, and eat whenever it suits your plans.
For an outdoor dinner, you can reserve a tabletop shichirin grill or a Char-Broil offset smoker. Bring your preferred meat, seafood, vegetables, and drinks, then cook together in the garden. Barbecue equipment must come from Kominka Yuzuki rather than being brought from outside. Outdoor cooking finishes by 8:00 PM, and the cleaning is handled after your meal.
A self-service breakfast can also be arranged. The ingredients for a hot sandwich are prepared in advance, allowing you to cook and eat it whenever you wake up. Coffee accompanies the sandwich. A full Japanese breakfast with rice, miso soup, grilled fish, pickles, and seasonal side dishes is another option.
For a special evening, choose the travelling sushi dinner stay. A sushi chef with around 20 years of experience prepares seasonal Toyama seafood in front of you. The meal includes appetisers, white shrimp, sea urchin and salmon roe sushi, Gokayama tofu with seasonal vegetables, chawanmushi, a longer sushi course, dessert, and coffee. The fish changes with the season, and preferences can be shared in advance.
The sushi dinner includes a Japanese breakfast the following morning. You may bring your own drinks, while local sake can also be arranged. This dining experience is available for larger groups and is not offered during selected peak holiday periods.
Onsen and Wellness
Create your own private hot spring bath inside a wide, handmade Shigaraki pottery tub. The bath measures approximately 120 centimetres across and provides enough room for two people to soak comfortably.
You receive two types of source water: Shogawa Seiryu Onsen and Shogawa Onsen Torigoe no Yu. Add your chosen source water to the bath, then mix it with hot water until you reach the temperature and mineral strength that feels right for you. You can divide the source water between separate bathing sessions or use it all during one longer soak.
Shogawa Seiryu Onsen is a neutral sodium chloride and bicarbonate spring with a naturally high mineral concentration. Torigoe no Yu contains calcium, magnesium, sodium, bicarbonate, and chloride. The listed bathing indications for both include sensitivity to cold, poor peripheral circulation, dry skin, and minor cuts.
The private changing area carries the natural fragrance of hinoki cypress. Towels, shampoo, conditioner, body wash, facial cleanser, a toothbrush, body sponge, razor, hairbrush, cotton items, skincare gel, and a hairdryer are provided.
Only the Shigaraki pottery bath can be used with the supplied source water. The source water must remain on the property and cannot be taken away.
Guests with Tattoos
You can use the private Shigaraki hot spring bath if you have tattoos. The entire property is reserved for your group, and there are no shared bathing facilities or tattoo restrictions.
Facilities
The main house contains the high-ceilinged Wakunouchi living room, two bedrooms, a kitchen, an engawa, and the private bathing area. The living room’s smooth white plaster wall becomes an approximately 110-inch screen after dark. A ceiling-mounted popIn Aladdin projector lets you watch streaming services by signing in with your own account. There is no standard television.
You can also spend time in the Kura, a traditional storehouse where the original clay walls remain visible. Part of the interior is closed, but the main accessible area can be used during your stay. The former farm-equipment shed, known as the Naya, has been restored as a workshop and working space.
Free Wi-Fi is available across the property, and on-site parking is provided. The garden, kitchen, dining spaces, projector, bath amenities, and traditional buildings make it easy to spend most of your stay without following a fixed schedule.
Activities
Make your own seasonal pizza and bake it in the outdoor wood-fired oven. You add the sauce and toppings to a 19-centimetre pizza before placing it in the oven with support nearby. The experience also includes homemade pickles, a drink, and a small fermented red-bean dessert. Reserve by 3:00 PM on the previous day. Heavy winter snow can affect availability.
You can also organise an outdoor barbecue, try slow-smoking food, relax on the engawa, or enjoy films on the plaster screen after sunset. These simple shared experiences suit the character of the house and give you time to enjoy the property rather than treating it only as somewhere to sleep.
Beyond the house, explore the Shogawa area and its riverside scenery. You can take a sightseeing cruise through Shogawa Gorge, walk through the nearby hot spring area, or visit Inami, where woodcarving workshops line the streets around Zuisenji Temple. The UNESCO-listed gassho-style villages of Gokayama also make a rewarding longer outing.
