Whether you’re celebrating a special day or simply looking to unwind, this is a place where you can slow down and feel at home.
Accommodation
Shosenkaku Kagetsu offers several room types that reflect the charm of the region. Choose from traditional Japanese-style rooms or Western-Japanese hybrids. If you’re looking for a more luxurious experience, book one of the rooms with a private open-air bath.
The “Ritsu” room gives you views of the evening moon from a spacious tatami setting, while the “I” room invites you to soak in moonlight on a wooden floor. The “Ne” and “Ga” rooms offer open-air cedar baths with views of the surrounding mountains. “Sara” features a ceramic tub and tatami platform beds for a restful night. If you prefer a simple, classic setup, the standard Japanese-style rooms offer wide spaces and a traditional layout—some even accommodate up to nine people.
All rooms come with amenities such as a tea set, yukata, refrigerator, toiletries, and seasonal sweets. You’ll also find private toilets and baths, television, air conditioning, and stylish lighting that complements the natural wood and paper design.
Dining
Enjoy a culinary journey through Niigata’s seasonal ingredients with handcrafted kaiseki cuisine. Meals feature freshly harvested vegetables from Uonuma, local fish, and premium Echigo-grown rice. The rice, cooked from their own fields, adds rich flavor and texture to every dish.
Your dinner changes with the seasons, offering different tastes every three months. Savor dishes like hotaru-ika with miso vinegar or grilled nodoguro, and end the evening with beautifully arranged sweets. The ryokan prepares each menu with care, aiming for balance, freshness, and beauty.
For breakfast, start your day with steamed rice and nourishing side dishes. In summer, enjoy vegetables picked from the ryokan’s own garden. If you have dietary preferences, let the staff know in advance and the kitchen will adjust your menu.
Onsen and Wellness
Shosenkaku Kagetsu draws its hot spring water from the Echigo-Yuzawa source, known for its mild and gentle feel—safe even for babies. The baths are all natural, using 100% flowing spring water, with some indoor baths using filtration to ensure cleanliness during busy times.
You can move between two large bathing areas: the garden bath “Iroha no Yu” and the cypress bath “Hoheto no Yu.” Each includes an indoor bath, a large rock bath, and two outdoor baths, with views that shift between morning light and evening glow. The baths are open 24 hours, with men’s and women’s areas switching at midnight.
If you want more privacy, reserve the “Danran” bath—a private bath area with an open-air tub where you can soak in peace. After bathing, relax with a cup of hot spring drinking water, known for its health benefits, or take a seat in the cooling area to let your body unwind naturally.
Guests with Tattoos
Shosenkaku Kagetsu does not publicly state restrictions for tattoos. If you’re concerned, it’s best to book the private bath or confirm with the front desk before using the public onsen.
Facilities
Your comfort continues throughout the ryokan. Find yukata in various sizes and colors in your room, and request different bedding if needed. Each room comes with a private bathroom, tea set, and seasonal snacks. The building includes a small shop, rest areas, and multiple dining rooms, including private and semi-private spaces.
Accessibility is also considered. The “Ga” room includes a slope and private dining space, and the staff can provide extra support as needed. The facility also uses a water treatment system called Apex Water, which enhances the natural spring’s hydrating effects.
Activities
Take your time exploring the ryokan’s onsen circuit or relax in your room with mountain views. You can stroll through the garden, enjoy a seasonal menu, or sip tea while watching the snow or rain. Whether you’re staying in summer or winter, the surrounding landscape always offers something beautiful to see.
You can also enjoy seasonal extras like freshly picked vegetables or local specialties depending on the time of year. If you’re celebrating an event, ask the staff about custom meals or cakes with personalized messages.
