Overview

Yatsusankan invites you to step into an old-fashioned Japanese atmosphere, where the rhythm of the seasons guides both your dining and your surroundings. In the heart of the Hida region, every month brings new colors, aromas, and flavors. The chefs design a monthly kaiseki menu using the region’s freshest bounty—wild vegetables in spring, river fish in summer, mushrooms and mountain delicacies in autumn, and cold yellowtail from Himi Bay in winter.

Your stay here is more than a getaway—it’s a journey through Hida’s traditions, landscapes, and culinary heritage.

Accommodation

The inn’s architecture tells the story of more than a century. From the Meiji-era Shogetsu Tower built in 1905 to Showa-period sukiya-style design, each building preserves the craftsmanship of its time. As you walk through long tatami corridors with latticework windows, hear the gentle creak of wooden stairs, and pass through slightly lowered gateways, you feel history all around you.

You can choose from a range of rooms:

  • Special Rooms (KUON, TAMAYURA, YUTOROGI) – Opened in 2022, blending refined comfort with historical charm.
  • General Japanese-Style Rooms – Spacious tatami rooms, some with sunken hearths for a nostalgic touch.
  • Western-Style Rooms – Twin beds with added comforts like private massage chairs.
  • Heritage Rooms in Shogetsu Tower – Traditional settings with garden or river views, including rooms like Ebisu, Daikoku, and Hotei.
  • Half-Open-Air Bath Suites – Large, private spaces where you can soak while enjoying the scenery.

Dining

Dining at Yatsusankan is a celebration of Hida’s natural blessings. The kaiseki menu changes monthly, weaving seasonal ingredients into a multi-course experience.

Signature highlights include:

  • Hida Beef – Richly marbled and raised in the Hida Furukawa area.
  • River Fish – Ayu in summer and autumn, along with year-round Iwana and Yamame.
  • Mountain Delicacies – Spring greens, autumn mushrooms, and the rare Hida-farmed torafugu (blowfish).

One of the most treasured offerings is the Sowa-ryu Honzen Kuzushi. Rooted in the Sowa-ryu tea ceremony tradition of the Kanamori family, it blends Muromachi-period noble cuisine with Hida hospitality. You enjoy rice, soup, seasonal sides, and Toyama seafood, all served in traditional footed tableware that has been in use for over 130 years.

Breakfast is a nostalgic Hida Zai Go style meal—steaming rice served with local classics such as hoba-miso, komodo-dofu, gisei-yaki, and koro-imo. Both dinner and breakfast are served in private dining rooms for a more personal experience.

Onsen and Wellness

The baths at Yatsusankan are as much a part of your stay as the food. Water flows directly from Nagareha Hot Springs, known for its skin-beautifying qualities.

Seseragi no Yu offers a covered open-air garden bath surrounded by rocks and trees, where you can breathe in the evening air or morning sunshine. Depending on the season, men may enjoy a doburoku bath and women a rose bath.

Hot spring benefits include relieving neuralgia, easing stiff shoulders, improving circulation, and promoting healthy skin by gently removing dead cells.

Oshidori no Yu is available for private reservation—two indoor baths with unique designs, often chosen by couples or families for their intimate setting.

For deeper relaxation, the Relief Room Tsukihime offers aromatherapy and English reflexology treatments in a calm, welcoming space.

Guests with Tattoos

The ryokan’s tattoo policy is not stated publicly—contact the property before booking to confirm onsen access if you have tattoos.

Yatsusankan blends comfort with character through a number of inviting spaces:

  • Flower Room Mini Library – Stocked with Showa-era books and offering coffee or tea upon request.
  • Relaxation Lounge – Overlooking the garden, this space is perfect for quiet moments with background music and massage chairs.

During your stay, stroll through the labyrinth-like corridors, appreciating seasonal decorations arranged by the seventh-generation proprietress. The surrounding Hida region offers traditional townscapes, cultural festivals, and scenic countryside walks.
