Overview
Hotel Utano Kyoto Besho gives you a quiet Kyoto stay in the Utano area of Ukyo Ward, about 15 minutes by car from Arashiyama. The hotel opened in November 2024 after the renewal of a historic early Showa-era residence once owned by Kyoto industrialist Mitsuzo Owatari. The main building, gate, side gate, and middle gate are recognized as Registered Tangible Cultural Properties.
This is a good choice if you want a small hotel with history, garden views, private hot spring bathing, and easy access to western Kyoto. You stay close to Ninna-ji, Ryoan-ji, Kinkaku-ji, Myoshin-ji, Kitano Tenmangu, and Arashiyama, while returning to a property with only 10 rooms.
Accommodation
You choose from 10 rooms, and every room includes a private hot spring bath. The buildings include a shoin-style main hall, a sukiya-style annex, and a Spanish-inspired Western wing, each restored with attention to its original character.
Room types include larger historic rooms such as Matsu at 137.9㎡ and Roku at 95.9㎡ plus a private garden, as well as Western Wing rooms and newer rooms ranging from about 57.8㎡ to 72.1㎡. Depending on the room, you may have beds, futons for additional travelers, a blue-stone Japanese hot spring bath, garden views, or a more Western-style layout.
In-room features include Wi-Fi, electric kettle, refrigerator with minibar, humidifying air cleaner, safe, USB plug, TV, separate shower booth, bathrobe, yukata, pajamas, towels, bath products, coffee, tea, and mineral water.
Dining
Meals are served at MURASAKINO DINING, a renovated shoin-style dining room overlooking the south-side Japanese garden. The space is used for dinner, breakfast, daytime lounge service, and after-dinner digestif service.
Dinner focuses on Japanese cuisine using ingredients from Kyoto and nearby regions, with seafood from Awaji Island playing an important role. The menu also draws on the history of Miketsukuni, the regions that supplied food to the Imperial Court, and pairs seafood with Kyoto vegetables and seasonal ingredients.
Breakfast includes Kyoto-style obanzai, seasonal grilled fish, simmered dishes, vegetable shabu-shabu with sea bream broth, earthen pot-cooked rice, miso soup, Kyoto pickles, and dessert. Dinner begins from 6:00 PM with last entry at 8:00 PM, and breakfast is served from 7:30 AM with last entry at 9:30 AM.
Onsen and Wellness
Every room has a private hot spring bath, so you can soak in your own space without using a shared bath. The water comes from Kyoto Kiyomizu Onsen and is listed as an alkaline simple hot spring.
The hotel does not have a public bath. Instead, the bathing experience stays private and room-based, which suits you well if you want quiet bath time after sightseeing.
The hot spring water is associated with relief for fatigue, sensitivity to cold, stiff muscles and joints, nerve pain, mild hypertension, stress-related symptoms, and general health improvement.
Guests with Tattoos
Tattoos are not a concern for your in-room bath because every room has its own private hot spring bath and there is no public bath. You can enjoy the onsen in your own room without needing to follow shared-bath rules.
