Overview

At Awakan, you experience more than just a stay—it’s an adventure by the sea. Located on the coast of Awajishima, this ryokan invites you to relax in open-air hot springs, savor seasonal dishes, and enjoy the thrill of fishing just steps from your room. Whether you’re a seasoned angler or trying it for the first time, Awakan makes it easy for you to reel in your own dinner and taste the true flavor of the island. With on-site activities, luxurious rooms, and a direct path from your room to the fishing dock, this is where comfort meets the natural world.

Accommodation

Choose from a wide range of room types, including spacious Japanese-style rooms, Japanese-Western combinations, and exclusive suites with private hot spring baths. Some rooms offer direct access to the private fishing pier, letting you go from relaxing on the terrace to casting a line in just minutes.

The standout “Shinkai Floor” features rooms designed with local materials like Awaji tile, Takasago stone, and Banshu-ori fabrics. Each room includes a dining space, tatami seating, and open-air bath with views of the sea. You can even find quirky details like climbing poles for children and whiteboard walls for drawing. Outside, firepit tables and hammocks add to the experience, perfect for family bonding or quiet evenings with the sound of waves.

If you prefer extra privacy, book the “Wave Suite.” This 250m² luxury space includes an indoor and outdoor hot spring bath, a kitchen-equipped dining area, and oceanfront terrace just three meters from the sea. It’s ideal for larger groups or families wanting an indulgent getaway with room to unwind.

Dining

At Awakan, your meals showcase the seasonal bounty of Awajishima. In summer, the ryokan serves up expertly prepared hamo (pike conger), including dishes like hamo tempura, hamo sashimi, and hamo shabu. This fish, prized for its soft texture and rich flavor, becomes the centerpiece of your evening meal.

For a more relaxed option, join the seasonal dinner buffet. You can fill your plate with sushi, sashimi, roast beef, and dishes made from locally harvested vegetables. Try unique offerings like hamo karaage, grilled karei with summer vegetables, or chilled soba noodles. Save room for dessert—fruit tarts, parfaits, and regional sweets are a highlight.

You can also upgrade to a kaiseki dinner. One menu features fresh catch from Yura Port, served sashimi-style, grilled, and simmered. Another focuses on premium Awaji beef, paired with vegetables from local farms. Every course brings a new taste of the island’s culture and natural gifts.

In the morning, the breakfast buffet includes everything from made-to-order sandwiches with Awaji chicken and eggs to roasted beef rice bowls and miso soup. It’s a filling start to a full day by the sea.

Onsen and Wellness

Soak in the healing waters of Sumoto Onsen, drawn from 1,500 meters underground. Both the first-floor Uzushio bath and second-floor Panorama bath feature indoor and open-air sections, so you can relax while watching the ocean waves. Alkaline water with a pH of 8.6 helps your skin stay smooth and soft.

Awakan rotates the bath schedule so you can try both styles during your stay. Each area includes thoughtful design touches and large windows for ocean views. Whether you bathe in the morning sun or under the stars, the experience refreshes your body and spirit.

If you have tattoos, you’re welcome to enjoy the hot springs. There are no restrictions, so feel free to relax in either the public or private baths during your stay.

Facilities

Awakan is built around comfort, fun, and discovery. You’ll find on-site fishing spots, hot spring baths, and a seasonal outdoor pool opening each June. Children can join summer events like goldfish scooping and fireworks. Need gear? Visit the shop on the third floor for bait and tackle.

The ryokan also offers direct access from some rooms to the sea, without needing to use stairs—great if you’re carrying fishing gear or helping little ones. Free Wi-Fi is available throughout the property, and you can even get your catch cleaned, cooked, and served at dinner for a small fee.

Activities

Fishing takes center stage at Awakan. You can fish 24 hours a day at the private pier—gear, bait, and life jackets are all included with your stay. Staff help you set up your line, remove hooks, and even clean your fish. Families love the safe, shallow family area, where kids can try sabiki fishing for mackerel and sardines. In summer, you might even land horse mackerel or sea bream.

Looking for something more exciting? Try the boat fishing trip, available Fridays through Sundays. Ride out on a 50-person vessel equipped with clean toilets and helpful crew. The target fish varies by season—go for rockfish in spring, mackerel and horse mackerel in summer, or hairtail and filefish in the cooler months.

You can also upgrade to a charter boat. Choose from three vessels, each offering half-day or full-day trips. These boats are perfect for serious anglers and families alike, with onboard toilets, shaded areas, and experienced guides. Whether you’re jigging for bluefish or trying your hand at traditional tai-rubber techniques, the experience is unforgettable.

Additional Features
