Overview

Stay beside a clear mountain stream in the quiet Hinatami area at the far end of Shima Onsen. Hinatamikan first opened in 1905 and now welcomes you with only ten rooms, understated Japanese design, private hot spring bathing, and views of the river, waterfalls, forests, and surrounding mountains.

The sound of flowing water follows you through much of the ryokan. Instead of large communal baths or busy public spaces, you find an intimate setting where you can enjoy seasonal Japanese meals and soak in natural hot spring water without sharing the bath. Hinatami Yakushido, one of Shima Onsen’s important historic buildings, stands close by, while the blue water of Okushima Lake and the wider hot spring town are easy to explore during your stay.

Accommodation

Choose from six room categories, ranging from traditional tatami rooms to spacious Japanese-Western suites with private semi-open-air hot spring baths. Natural oak beds, exposed wooden beams, low furniture, and large windows connect each room with the mountain setting outside.

Room A covers approximately 57 to 64 square metres and combines a Japanese sitting room with a separate bedroom. A private, all-weather semi-open-air bath uses 100% natural hot spring water, allowing you to soak while looking toward the clear stream, waterfall, and mountains. The waterfall is illuminated after dark, giving you a different view in the evening.

Room B is the largest suite and the only maisonette-style room. The upper level contains a Japanese sitting room and a bedroom with a solid oak low bed. Stairs lead to a lower level with a powder room and a private semi-open-air bath filled with 100% natural hot spring water. This layout gives your bathing space extra separation from the living area.

Room C is a river-facing Japanese-Western room measuring approximately 45 to 52 square metres. A ceiling rising to around 3.6 metres reveals beams that have supported the building since the early Showa period. You can relax in the tatami room, sleep in a separate bedroom with solid oak beds, and listen to the stream outside.

Room D is a 12-tatami corner room with windows on two sides and seating beside the river view. It is also the only room category available when you are travelling with children aged 12 or younger.

Room E is a 10-tatami room created for two. A dining table beside the window lets you enjoy dinner while looking across the stream and forest. Room F is another 10-tatami option, with views toward the nationally designated Hinatami Yakushido and the mountains beyond.

Your room includes free Wi-Fi, air conditioning and heating, a television, refrigerator, electric kettle, tea set, safety box, washlet toilet, towels, yukata, seasonal haori jacket, disposable tabi socks, toiletries, skincare products, and a hairdryer. Room A and Room B include private bathing products beside the in-room hot spring. All rooms are non-smoking.

Dining

Enjoy Japanese meals prepared with seasonal ingredients and produce from Gunma. The menu changes throughout the year, giving you a taste of the mountains and countryside during each season. Dinner begins at 6:30 PM and is served course by course, allowing you to enjoy the meal at an unhurried pace.

When you are staying as a pair, you can normally choose between dinner in your room and dinner in the dining room. Room E is especially suited to in-room dining, with a table placed beside the river-facing window. When you are staying as a larger party, dinner is served in the dining room.

Breakfast is always served in the dining room. You can begin the morning with a Japanese meal before returning to the hot spring or setting out to explore Shima Onsen.

Allergy requests must be shared when you book. Menus cannot be adjusted for allergies involving basic ingredients such as flour, beans, eggs, or milk, or for meat, fish, seafood stock, mushrooms, vegan, vegetarian, or halal diets.

Onsen and Wellness

Hinatamikan does not have a large communal bath. Instead, you can enjoy three small hot spring baths, all reserved for completely private use. One is an open-air bath beside the stream, while the other two are indoor baths with their own character and atmosphere.

You do not reserve the baths in advance. When a bath is free, you can enter, lock the door, and use it privately for up to 40 minutes. You may bathe again later when a bath becomes available. Bathing hours run from 3:00 PM until 11:00 AM the following morning, giving you time for an evening soak, a late-night bath, or one final visit before departure.

The baths draw natural water from the Hinatami source. The water is classified as a calcium and sodium sulfate spring and is associated with relief from neuralgia, stiff shoulders, fatigue, and minor skin injuries. The clear water and streamside setting make the open-air bath especially inviting during fresh spring greenery, autumn colour, and winter snow.

Room A and Room B give you an additional private bathing experience. Their semi-open-air baths use 100% natural hot spring water, so you can soak in your room whenever you please.

Guests with Tattoos

You can use all three private hot spring baths if you have tattoos. Each bath is locked during use and is never shared with anyone outside your room. You can also bathe freely in the private semi-open-air hot spring when you stay in Room A or Room B.

Facilities

Hinatamikan includes a lounge, dining room, three private hot spring baths, a drinks vending machine, complimentary Wi-Fi, and on-site parking. A smoking room is located outside the main entrance, while every indoor space and accommodation room is non-smoking. You can wear your yukata throughout the ryokan, including in the dining room and on the way to the baths.

There is no elevator, so you need to use stairs to reach rooms and facilities on the upper floors. A complimentary transfer is available from the Shima Onsen bus terminal after 2:30 PM. You arrange collection by calling after your bus arrives rather than booking the shuttle in advance.

Activities

Begin with a walk to Hinatami Yakushido, a historic thatched-roof temple hall connected with the origins of Shima Onsen. The current building dates from the late 16th century and is recognised as an Important Cultural Property of Japan.

Continue toward Okushima Lake, known for the rich blue colour often called “Shima Blue.” Walking routes and viewpoints let you see the water against fresh green leaves, autumn forests, or snowy mountain slopes. You can also explore Maya Falls, Koizumi Falls, Oizumi Falls, and other natural sights along the upper Shima River.

Farther down the valley, you can walk through the traditional hot spring town, visit public footbaths and drinking-water fountains, or see the Shima Potholes. These rounded hollows formed in the riverbed over thousands of years as stones moved repeatedly in the current.

Additional Features

Check-in runs from 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM. The standard dinner-and-breakfast stay includes checkout by noon, while selected early-departure and breakfast-only stays have a 10:00 AM checkout.

Each booking is currently limited to four people, regardless of how many rooms you reserve. Most rooms focus on adult stays, and Room D is the only category available when you are travelling with children aged 12 or younger.

Winter tyres are required when you drive to Shima Onsen between December and March. Snow and ice can affect the mountain roads even when conditions appear clear in the lower parts of Gunma.
