Overview

When you arrive at Hotel Seifuen, you step into a relaxing retreat shaped by the soft atmosphere of Tsukioka Onsen. The hotel sits in a peaceful part of Niigata, known for mineral-rich hot spring water with a distinctive emerald color. You feel a sense of calm the moment you enter the lobby, surrounded by warm lighting, natural textures, and gentle fragrances that invite you to slow down.

You stay close to local shops, walking paths, and the soothing rhythm of the hot spring town. This is a place for slow travel. You can soak in Tsukioka Onsen’s famous beauty water, enjoy the scent of sulfur and cypress, spend time in the lounge, choose a room that fits your trip, and explore the town in a colorful yukata.

Accommodation

Your room at Hotel Seifuen gives you a calm place to rest after the baths and town walks. You can choose from Japanese-style rooms with tatami, rooms with the gentle scent of cypress, Western-style rooms with Simmons beds, Japanese-Western rooms, barrier-free universal rooms, and the higher-grade GENJI Koh floor.

The main room wings include Suehiro-tei, Miyabitei, and Heian-tei. Suehiro-tei focuses on privacy and quiet, with options such as a Japanese-style room with a cypress bath, Simmons bed twin rooms, a single room, and a universal design room. Miyabitei offers Japanese-style rooms, Japanese-Western comfort rooms, and Simmons twin rooms. Heian-tei includes deluxe Japanese rooms, Japanese rooms with dining areas, Japanese rooms with Simmons beds, and Japanese-style corner rooms.

For a more spacious stay, the GENJI Koh floor offers rooms starting from 77 square meters. These rooms include Japanese-Western rooms with view baths, a comfort Japanese-Western room with Serta beds and a sofa, and a suite with an open-air bath where you can look out over the Kambara Plain and the Iide mountain range.

Your room includes yukata, a tea set, toiletries, and comfortable seating so you can settle in immediately and enjoy the flow of ryokan life.

Dining

Dinner at Hotel Seifuen brings together the flavors of Echigo, Niigata’s sea, mountains, and plains. The dinner buffet was renewed in summer 2025, with a live kitchen serving freshly grilled and freshly cooked dishes. You can enjoy seafood from the Sea of Japan, Niigata Wagyu Shibata Beef, a salad buffet, a dessert buffet, and a drink bar.

The buffet highlights include A4-rank or higher Niigata Wagyu “Shibata Beef” served as an original meat salad simmered sukiyaki-style in front of you, sashimi, sushi prepared by chefs, grilled turban shells from Sado, specially cultivated Koshihikari rice grown by contract farmer Genzo, seasonal fruits, sweets, and soft drinks. Alcoholic drinks are available for an extra charge.

You can also choose special kaiseki cuisine, depending on your plan. This meal focuses on the bounty of the Sea of Japan and the Echigo Plain, with seasonal ingredients prepared by dedicated chefs. Hotel Seifuen was selected in the inn and hotel category of the Niigata Gastronomy Awards 2023, and the kaiseki is served in a private space where you can enjoy each dish at an unhurried pace.

Breakfast is served buffet-style at Akebono, the open dining room on the 8th floor. You can start the day with local dishes, fresh vegetables grown on the hotel’s own farm, Niigata rice, and the hotel’s specialty Seifuen Chazuke, made with rice, special broth, and your choice of toppings. From the dining room, you can look out across the mountains and countryside through a 180-degree panoramic view.

Onsen and Wellness

Hotel Seifuen gives you access to Tsukioka Onsen’s famous emerald-green beauty water. The spring has one of the highest sulfur contents in Japan, and you can notice the sulfur scent even outside the hotel. The water is known for leaving the skin feeling smooth and warming the body from within.

The spring quality is a sulfur-containing sodium-chloride spring. The water is weakly alkaline, hypotonic, and high temperature, with benefits listed for skin beautifying effects, rheumatism, neuralgia, gynecological diseases, lower back pain, stiff shoulders, and skin diseases. The water’s color can shift slightly depending on the season, weather, and daily conditions.

You can bathe in the Tsukioka Yu Incense Burner baths, where the scent of sulfur and cypress fills the air. The women’s bath is called Bijin no Yu, and the men’s bath is called Genji no Yu. Both include indoor bathing and open-air bathing with views of a Kyoto-style garden.

You can also use the large garden baths, Hime no Yu for women and Tono no Yu for men. These baths include spacious bathing areas, saunas, and open-air baths facing the garden. The large garden baths use boiled water because the natural sulfur-containing sodium-chloride spring has a limited daily supply; it recommends these baths for sensitive skin, certain illnesses, and infants with sensitive skin.

Three private baths are available by reservation: Younoshin, Tabihira, and Shukuroku. Younoshin is a hinoki bath, while Tabihira and Shukuroku are agate (semi-precious stone with layered patterns) baths.

After bathing, you can stretch out in the relaxation areas, hydrate, and enjoy the lingering warmth that stays with you long after you leave the water.

Guests with Tattoos

If you have tattoos, you can enjoy the hot spring water by reserving a private bath. You simply book a time at the front desk. The personal setting allows you to relax at your own pace in complete comfort.
