Overview
Step into the historical heart of Kinosaki Onsen at Ryokan Tsutaya. This three-story wooden ryokan blends seamlessly into the surrounding onsen town, carrying with it a story that stretches back generations. You’ll walk the same halls once visited by Katsura Kogoro (later known as Takayoshi Kido), a key figure in the Meiji Restoration. The ryokan still preserves letters and artwork from this era, offering a rare blend of traditional hospitality and historical charm.
Whether you’re here for the healing waters, the atmosphere of old Japan, or the artistry on display throughout the inn, Ryokan Tsutaya invites you to slow down and soak in the past—one thoughtful moment at a time.
Accommodation
You’ll stay in rooms crafted from dark wood with bold, clean lines and warm, traditional touches. Tatami floors and futon bedding create an inviting and comfortable space, while Japanese paintings add a sense of timeless style. Each room has a distinct look, from carved alcoves to artistic wall panels and scenic window views.
Rooms are located in three areas:
- Main building (10 rooms): Rich in history and decorated with art tied to the Meiji Restoration.
- Annex Genbuso (4 rooms): Just across the street, ideal for larger groups or full rentals.
- New building Seirantei (10 rooms): A short walk away in a quiet valley, perfect for reflective stays.
Each room includes a toilet, air conditioning, TV, refrigerator, and safe. You’ll also find yukata, towels, toothbrushes, razors, and soap—all ready for you. Public baths are shared, as rooms do not have private bathing facilities.
Dining
Your meals at Ryokan Tsutaya are crafted with sincerity and care, using fresh seafood from the Sea of Japan and produce from the Tajima mountains. Dinners are served in your room, allowing you to eat in peace without leaving your space.
Depending on the season, you can enjoy:
- Spring to Autumn Kaiseki: Courses that highlight ingredients like sea bream, Tajima beef, red snow crab, and fresh mountain vegetables.
- Grilled Fried Tofu: A house specialty and a tribute to Katsura Kogoro’s favorite food.
- Deep Fried Scorpionfish: A nod to samurai tradition, this crispy whole fish offers rich flavor and texture.
- Tajima Beef Sukiyaki: Thin-sliced local beef paired with mountain-grown Koshihikari rice.
- Sea Bream Shabu Shabu: Lightly cooked in hot water and dipped in ponzu for a refreshing taste.
From November to March, the ryokan focuses on crab dishes:
- Crab Suki Hotpot
- Full Crab Course: Includes grilled, sashimi, and hotpot styles.
Children’s meals are available year-round, served Western-style on a plate. Add-on dishes like abalone or mini steaks can be requested in advance.
Onsen and Wellness
Enjoy the quiet warmth of the indoor baths, fed by Kinosaki Onsen’s natural hot spring water. The ryokan’s compact baths give you the same high-quality experience as the larger soto-yu (public baths) around town.
You’ll bathe in sodium-calcium chloride spring water, known for easing fatigue, improving circulation, and supporting recovery from aches and pains. As with many ryokan in Kinosaki, you’re encouraged to wear a colorful yukata and explore the surrounding public baths, especially between April and October.
Guests with Tattoos
You can enjoy the public baths at Ryokan Tsutaya even if you have tattoos. The property welcomes all visitors and encourages use of the nearby soto-yu public bathhouses as well.
Facilities
Throughout the ryokan, you’ll find subtle artistic elements that reflect the inn’s long history. The lobby and second-floor lounge feature handwritten letters, calligraphy, Edo-period newspapers, and artwork from historical figures. A gallery space displays pieces by painters and ceramic artists connected to the inn’s past.
Other facilities include:
- Public bath with natural hot spring water
- Yukata rental for exploring the onsen town in traditional dress
- Souvenir and art displays in the common areas
- Library and reading spaces throughout the building
- Mahjong rental (fee applies)
- Parking for up to 30 vehicles
You can also stay in the annex or new building with your group:
- Annex Genbuso: Spacious and private, this area works well for families or groups of 8 or more.
- New Building Seirantei: Tucked in a quiet valley, it offers private rental plans for groups of 10 or more and includes the Yutori Gallery—a quiet space for music, reading, and art.
Activities
Kinosaki Onsen is known for its walkable layout, flowing hot springs, and charming streets. You can step outside the ryokan in a yukata and explore seven public bathhouses, each with its own theme and history. Springtime brings cherry blossoms, visible from your room or while strolling nearby streets. In autumn, the leaves color the town in reds and golds.
Inside the ryokan, you can browse the history gallery, read vintage books, or simply sit by a window and enjoy the slow pace of the onsen town.
