Overview

Stay in the centre of Echigo Yuzawa at Yuzawa Grand Hotel, a hot spring hotel surrounded by Niigata’s mountain scenery. Echigo-Yuzawa Station is around two minutes away on foot, making this an easy base for ski trips, hot spring breaks, and year-round sightseeing across the Snow Country region.

The setting changes dramatically with the seasons. Winter covers the surrounding slopes in deep snow, spring and summer bring fresh greenery, and autumn fills the mountains with warm colours. You can spend the day skiing, walking, fishing, or exploring Yuzawa before returning for natural hot spring bathing and a generous meal built around Niigata ingredients.

Several bathing areas allow you to enjoy an indoor hot spring tour without leaving the building. You can also choose a reservable private bath or one of the two rooms with its own free-flowing open-air onsen.

Accommodation

Yuzawa Grand Hotel offers Japanese-style rooms, Japanese-Western rooms with beds and tatami, two-room Japanese layouts, designer rooms, accessible accommodation, and larger special rooms. Every room is non-smoking and includes complimentary Wi-Fi, an air purifier, humidifier, refrigerator, kettle, tea set, safe, television, hairdryer, towels, yukata, slippers, and toiletries.

The single Japanese-style rooms range from eight to 17.5 tatami mats. Futon bedding gives you a traditional place to sleep, while the low table creates a comfortable area for tea and quiet time in your room. You can request to have the futons prepared before your arrival.

Japanese-Western rooms combine a ten-tatami Japanese area with two beds. This layout lets you sleep in a Western-style bed while still having enough tatami space to sit, stretch out, or prepare additional futons.

The two-room Japanese accommodation offers either a ten-tatami room with a six-tatami room or a larger 12.5-tatami room with a ten-tatami room. The separate spaces give you more flexibility when you are travelling with family or sharing your stay with friends.

Designer Modern Rooms use indirect lighting and low Japanese-style beds to create a softer evening atmosphere. You can rest on the bed at any time without waiting for futons to be prepared.

The semi-open-air bath rooms place a private bath beside the window. Four rooms look across the town of Yuzawa, while two face the area behind the building and overlook Ipponsugi Ski Resort during winter. These baths use heated regular water rather than natural hot spring water.

For a true private onsen experience, choose Hanamizuki or Beniyamazakura, the two Japanese-style rooms with a free-flowing open-air hot spring bath. The layouts combine two tatami rooms, giving you plenty of indoor space alongside a private bath supplied directly with natural spring water.

The larger special-room collection includes Japanese suites with two tatami rooms and a Japanese-Western suite with a bedroom and living space. One suite also features an interior garden. Accessible rooms provide wider and more practical layouts when you need easier movement through the accommodation.

Dining

Dinner is served as either a Japanese, Western, and Chinese buffet or a Japanese set meal, depending on the date. The dining format is fixed for each day, so your confirmed stay determines which style you receive.

On buffet evenings, around 50 dishes fill the counters at Restaurant Kasteria. At the live kitchen, you can enjoy steak straight from the grill, freshly prepared sushi, tempura, and seafood cooked in front of you. The seafood selection may include scallops, prawns, or turban shell, depending on the day’s supply.

The buffet also brings together Japanese dishes, familiar Western food, and Chinese cooking prepared by a specialist chef. You may find clam soup, pizza, mapo tofu, grilled dishes, salads, and seasonal recipes, followed by handmade pudding, cakes, jellies, fruit, and desserts from the children’s corner.

One of the highlights is Koshihikari rice supplied by contracted farms in the Minamiuonuma and Shiozawa areas. This Niigata rice is known for its sweetness, aroma, glossy appearance, and satisfyingly firm texture. You can enjoy it throughout dinner alongside seafood, meat, vegetables, and regional dishes.

Dinner normally follows either one extended serving period or two timed sittings, depending on how busy the hotel is. You select an available time when you arrive. On dates without the buffet, you receive a Japanese set dinner in the restaurant or convention dining area.

Breakfast is usually served as a buffet with around 40 Japanese and Western dishes. You can begin with freshly cooked Koshihikari rice, handmade miso, grilled and simmered food, small Japanese side dishes, or bread baked inside the restaurant.

Freshly prepared rice balls are made with Minamiuonuma and Shiozawa Koshihikari. You can choose fillings such as salmon, pickled plum, kelp, cod roe, shiso seeds, or natural salt from Sasagawa Nagare. A morning ochazuke station lets you add your preferred toppings to rice before pouring over hot tea or broth.

Breakfast times and the number of sittings depend on the number of people staying that day. Complimentary soft drinks are available during both breakfast and buffet dinner.

Onsen and Wellness

Yuzawa Grand Hotel has three main bathing areas: Kiri no Yu, Wakakusa no Yu, and Iwa no Yu. Together, these spaces give you several indoor and outdoor tubs, bubble baths, garden views, saunas, and cold-water baths.

The natural spring is a weakly alkaline, hypotonic simple spring. It rises from the source at 57.9°C. Traditional bathing indications include muscle discomfort, neuralgia, stiff joints, bruises, sprains, sensitivity to cold, fatigue, and recovery after illness.

Kiri no Yu is a detached garden bathing area with separate sections for men and women. The landscape changes from spring flowers and summer greenery to autumn leaves and snow-covered scenery in winter.

The women’s side includes Kiraku no Yu, a spacious indoor bath looking towards bamboo, and Niwasaki no Yu, a garden bubble bath. The men’s side includes the large Kimamana no Yu bath and Niwakaze no Yu, where you can soak while looking into the garden. Additional rock and bubble baths complete the outdoor bathing areas.

Both the men’s and women’s sections include a sauna and cold-water bath. The saunas normally operate from early morning until late evening and maintain a temperature of approximately 90°C to 100°C. A shampoo bar in each bathing area allows you to choose from several products.

After bathing, you can rest in Kino Sato, a Japanese-style relaxation area overlooking the garden.

Wakakusa no Yu is the women’s marble bathing area. Its spacious indoor tub provides room to stretch out, while dividers between the washing stations give you greater personal space.

Iwa no Yu is the men’s marble bath. Its larger indoor tub offers an open layout and a quieter atmosphere. Wakakusa no Yu and Iwa no Yu normally open from 12:30 until 22:00.

Kiri no Yu normally opens from 5:00 until 1:00 the following morning, with an afternoon cleaning closure. Bring the bath towel and face towel from your room, as towels are not placed inside the shared bathing areas.

For private bathing, Takaranoyu and Hananoyu can be reserved in advance. Each private bath gives you a self-contained bathing space for approximately 45 minutes and includes ReFa shower equipment and a hairdryer.

Only the open-air baths inside Hanamizuki and Beniyamazakura use continuously flowing source water. The semi-open-air baths in the other selected rooms use regular heated water rather than onsen water.

Shiatsu, foot massage, lymphatic care, and facial treatments are available in the first-floor relaxation room. Treatment times and availability depend on the daily schedule.

If You Have Tattoos

If you have tattoos, you cannot use Kiri no Yu, Wakakusa no Yu, Iwa no Yu, or the shared saunas and changing areas.

Reserve Takaranoyu or Hananoyu for a private bathing session instead. You can also choose Hanamizuki or Beniyamazakura, where you have your own free-flowing open-air hot spring bath inside your accommodation.

Facilities

Yuzawa Grand Hotel includes Restaurant Kasteria, a spacious 24-hour lobby lounge, a café corner, the Furusato souvenir shop, a relaxation room, a game corner, banquet halls, meeting rooms, and a karaoke space available to larger pre-booked groups. You can also use the seasonal ski rental room, coin laundry, complimentary lockers, drinks vending machines, an accessible toilet, elevators, complimentary Wi-Fi, and free on-site parking. The building is non-smoking apart from two designated smoking spaces.

Restaurant Kasteria has large windows and serves as the main breakfast and dinner venue. The Furusato shop carries Niigata sweets, regional foods, and Yuzawa souvenirs, including sasa-yuki sweets and walnut yubesi. The lobby remains open throughout the day and provides a convenient place to meet, rest, or wait for transport.

The complimentary lockers and separate changing rooms can be used before check-in and after check-out. This is particularly useful when you plan to ski or explore Yuzawa outside your room-access hours.

During the ski season, the rental room provides skis, snowboards, and winter clothing. You can also arrange lessons and collect information about local slopes and resort shuttle services.

Activities

Ipponsugi Ski Resort is around two minutes away on foot, making it the closest choice for a quick session on the snow. Several larger ski areas can be reached using seasonal shuttle buses, and discounted lift tickets for selected resorts are available at the front desk.

Nearby choices include GALA Yuzawa, Yuzawa Kogen, Ishiuchi Maruyama, Kagura, NASPA Ski Garden, Kandatsu Snow Resort, Yuzawa Nakazato, Maiko Snow Resort, and Yuzawa Park. Opening periods, snow conditions, and shuttle schedules change each winter.

Outside the ski season, ride the Yuzawa Kogen Ropeway to Alp no Sato. The highland area sits on the slopes above town and includes mountain plants, walking paths, open lawns, and wide views across the surrounding landscape.

Ponshukan is around three minutes away on foot inside Echigo-Yuzawa Station. You can browse Niigata rice products, sake-related sweets, regional foods, and locally made souvenirs.

Yuzawa Strawberry Village is a short drive away and grows Echigohime, a large and sweet strawberry developed in Niigata. Seasonal picking dates depend on growing conditions.

At Yuzawa Fishing Park, you can try stream fishing and have your catch prepared on site. Daigenta Canyon offers waterfalls, mountain views, and outdoor scenery, while Kiyotsu Gorge is known for its dramatic rock walls and tunnel viewpoints.

You can also visit the Snow Country Museum to learn about Yuzawa’s history, daily life in a heavy-snow region, and the connection between the town and Yasunari Kawabata’s novel Snow Country.

Additional Features

Check-in begins at 15:00, and check-out is by 10:00. Complimentary Wi-Fi is available in the rooms and throughout the building, and the front desk operates 24 hours a day.

The hotel is around two minutes on foot from Echigo-Yuzawa Station. When you have heavy luggage, you can call after reaching the west-exit taxi area and request complimentary collection. Advance station pickup reservations are not accepted.

Complimentary parking is available for approximately 100 vehicles. During winter, you should arrive with suitable snow tyres, and chains may also be necessary during severe weather.
