Overview

At Hotel Ogawa, you stay deep in the mountains of Toyama, surrounded by the Northern Alps, dense forest, and the gentle sound of a clear stream. The quiet riverside setting gives you space to step away from daily life and focus on the pleasures of a traditional hot spring stay.

The natural spring was discovered in 1617 and has flowed for more than 400 years. Long valued as a place for restorative bathing, Ogawa Onsen became known as one of the four celebrated hot springs of the former Etchu Province. Today, you can enjoy the same soft bicarbonate-rich water in indoor baths, riverside open-air baths, and a remarkable cave bath formed by natural mineral deposits.

Your stay brings together mountain scenery, source-fed hot spring water, seasonal Toyama cuisine, and the warm character of a long-established ryokan. From spring greenery and autumn leaves to illuminated snow in winter, every season brings a different atmosphere.

Accommodation

You can choose from five main room categories, including traditional Japanese rooms, rooms with Western beds, and a spacious Premier Room with a private cypress bath. Each room gives you a comfortable base surrounded by mountain and river scenery.

The Standard Japanese-Western Room places two Simmons beds in a 12.5-tatami Japanese room. You can enjoy the character of tatami flooring while sleeping in a Western-style bed, making this one of the most popular room choices.

The Standard Japanese Room also measures 12.5 tatami mats and gives you a classic ryokan experience with futon bedding. The generous floor space allows you to sit, rest, and enjoy tea before your futon is prepared for the night.

Only three Wa-Modern Rooms are available. These special rooms combine a warm Japanese interior with stylish design details and two Simmons beds. The room feels fresh and welcoming while keeping the tatami setting associated with a traditional hot spring stay.

The Special Japanese-Western Room gives you a 15-tatami sitting room and a separate Western bedroom. The bedroom includes a sofa and two Simmons beds, allowing you to keep your sleeping and relaxation areas apart. This spacious layout works well when you would like more room to unwind.

The Premier Room is the largest room at Hotel Ogawa and offers one of the finest views. A private indoor bath made entirely from hinoki cypress looks toward the surrounding natural scenery. The fragrance of the wood and the view create a relaxing bathing experience, although this private bath uses plain water rather than natural hot spring water.

Dining

Your meals introduce you to the produce of Toyama’s mountains, clear rivers, fishing ports, and fertile plains. Although Hotel Ogawa stands deep in the mountains, the Sea of Japan coast is close enough for fresh seafood to arrive from nearby ports.

In spring and summer, your dinner may include bamboo shoots, fiddlehead ferns, and other mountain vegetables. Autumn brings mushrooms and deeper seasonal flavours. Salt-grilled iwana char from the clear mountain rivers is another local favourite, especially when paired with warm Toyama sake.

Seafood may include red snow crab, yellowtail, whelk, sweet shrimp, cutlassfish, firefly squid, and white shrimp. Firefly squid is closely associated with Toyama Bay, while white shrimp is prized for its delicate sweetness. The selection changes with the season and the day’s catch.

Toyama’s sake benefits from water that begins as snow in the Northern Alps before flowing through the region. You can choose a local sake to complement the seafood, river fish, and mountain dishes served with dinner.

You may also encounter regional specialities such as Miyazaki tarajiru, a rich miso soup filled with pieces of cod and kombu broth. Batabata-cha offers another taste of local culture. This rare post-fermented black tea is traditionally whisked until a light foam forms on the surface.

Breakfast is served at Kajikatei as either a buffet or a Japanese set meal. The format depends on the season and the number of people staying at the property.

Onsen and Wellness

Ogawa Onsen is a bicarbonate-rich salt spring with soft water that gradually warms you from within. The spring normally flows directly into the baths without circulation or reheating. A small amount of water may be added when necessary to bring the temperature to a comfortable level without significantly changing the spring quality.

The water has long been associated with restorative bathing and is traditionally used for fatigue, sensitivity to cold, neuralgia, rheumatic discomfort, and other bathing indications. Ogawa Onsen is also known through local tradition as Yakushi-no-Yu, the bath of the healing Buddha, and Kodakarano-Yu, the bath associated with blessings for children.

The Natural Cave Open-Air Bath is Hotel Ogawa’s signature bathing experience. You reach it by following a riverside path for around seven to eight minutes. Over many years, minerals from the spring hardened into a large cave-like formation above and around the bath. These mineral deposits are recognised as a natural monument of Asahi Town.

The cave bath is mixed-gender, and bathing garments are available for overnight stays. You can normally bathe from 07:00 until sunset. The bath closes from December until late April because of snow and winter conditions. Access may also change when weather or wildlife creates a safety concern.

Renge-no-Yu stands near the cave bath and is reserved for women. Surrounded by trees and mountain scenery, this open-air bath gives you a more private place to listen to the river and enjoy the changing landscape. Renge-no-Yu follows the same winter closure period as the cave bath.

Closer to the main building, the Riverside Rock Bath allows you to soak beside the flowing water. In winter, the surrounding snow is illuminated after dark, creating a striking setting for an evening bath.

The large Hinoki Barrel Bath is made entirely from cypress wood. Its generous size gives you room to stretch out while enjoying the clean fragrance of hinoki and the mountain air.

The spacious indoor bath looks across the stream, forest, and surrounding mountains. Natural light enters through the broad windows, while source-fed water continuously overflows from the bathing pool. The indoor bath, Riverside Rock Bath, and Hinoki Barrel Bath are normally available from 06:00 until 23:00.

Guests with Tattoos

Hotel Ogawa has shared indoor, outdoor, and mixed-gender hot spring baths. You cannot use these shared bathing facilities if you have tattoos. The Premier Room provides a private cypress bath, but this bath uses plain water rather than hot spring water.

Facilities

Inside Hotel Ogawa, you can relax in the lobby lounge while looking across the river and valley. The shop carries local confectionery, regional products, and souvenirs from Toyama. Kajikatei provides table seating for dinner and breakfast, while Hanakoji includes four private Japanese dining and banquet rooms named Komakusa, Suzuran, Rindo, and Yamayuri.

Larger banquet and meeting facilities include Zuiko, Kikyo, and Fukuju. These spaces support celebrations, meetings, group meals, and formal gatherings. A separate Furokan building also supports longer stays centred on traditional hot spring bathing.

Activities

A walk to the Natural Cave Open-Air Bath and Renge-no-Yu is part of the Hotel Ogawa experience. The riverside path takes you away from the main building and deeper into the forest, with mountain plants, flowing water, and seasonal scenery along the way.

You can request a prayer at the Yakushido hall connected to the history of Ogawa Onsen. A priest from Kisshoin Temple can conduct prayers for safe childbirth, good health, long life, academic success, and personal wishes.

Nearby, Asahi Ogawa Lake reflects the surrounding forest in its deep green water. Below the dam, Herbal Valley Ogawa features seasonal herbs and flowers. At Jade Coast, you can walk beside the Sea of Japan and search among the stones for pieces of jade carried down from the mountains.

You can also explore the reconstructed Jomon-period dwelling at the Fudodo ruins, see ceramics and Japanese art at the Ippuku Museum, or visit the Nizayama Art Forest, where a former red-brick hydroelectric power station now houses an art museum.

Additional Features

Hotel Ogawa has 51 rooms and parking for up to 100 vehicles. You can reach the property in around 15 minutes by car from the Asahi interchange.
