Overview

When you stay at Aburaya Tosen, you settle into Yudanaka Onsen in Nagano, with the Yomase River below, the mountains of Shinshu in view, and hot spring time built into the rhythm of your stay. The ryokan brings together open views, private bathing options, seasonal Shinshu dining, and easy access to one of Nagano’s best-known nature experiences: Jigokudani Yaen-Koen, famous for its wild Japanese macaques.

The atmosphere feels warm and refined, with rooms designed around river scenery, mountain views, and relaxed time after travel. You can choose a simple Japanese-style room, a sleep-focused wellness room, or a room with your own open-air bath for a more private onsen stay.

Accommodation

Room Food Special Room gives you the most private style of stay. You have an open-air bath, a private Löyly sauna, meals served in your room, and access to the seasonal lounge. Room designs include Saaya, Kagome, Akari Masu, and Gentian, each with its own Kumiko-inspired motif. You can enjoy chef’s table-style dining in your room, with freshly prepared dishes served in front of you.

Tokitei / Senyukan places you close to the river breeze of the Yomase River, with open-air hot spring baths and views toward the Hokushin Godake mountains. Tokitei Type A gives you a Japanese-style room with an open-air bath and night views along the river, while Tokitei Type B adds a more spacious layout with a relaxed sitting area. Senyukan combines Japanese-style space with twin beds and a panoramic mountain view.

Light -AKARI- gives you a refined Japanese-Western stay with a home-like feel. You can choose the Comfort Room 60㎡, the Comfort Room Twin, or the Comfort Room 45㎡. These rooms bring together tatami living areas, beds or Japanese-style layouts, and open views of Shinshu scenery.

Wellness Sleep Room focuses on deeper rest. You sleep on Emma Sleep bedding, choose from three pillow types, use aroma diffusers, adjust the lighting, and wake up on the riverside with morning light. The room also includes an air-purifying humidifier to support a cleaner, easier sleeping environment.

Standard Room is the simplest choice, with a calm Japanese-style layout and wide windows that open the room to the surrounding scenery. You still have access to the ryokan’s shared hot spring baths, dining, and facilities.

Dining

Dining centers on Shinshu ingredients, seasonal produce, and kaiseki-style cooking. You can enjoy dishes made with traditional Shinshu vegetables, seasonal ingredients, and careful presentation that brings color and texture to your meal.

Dinner can include live-kitchen touches, such as sushi prepared in front of you on selected kaiseki plans. The Tomoshibi standard kaiseki course adds Shinshu beef stone-grilled in front of you, while the Luxury ZEI premium kaiseki course adds more chef-selected dishes, including fish dishes and desserts.

Breakfast depends on your room type. If you stay in a comfort room or standard room, you enjoy a Japanese-Western buffet. If you stay in a room with an open-air bath, you can choose either the buffet or a private breakfast set.

Onsen and Wellness

You can soak in natural hot spring water while looking out toward the mountains of Shinshu. The ryokan has two large public bath areas, Yumeji no Yu and Yumemi no Yu, and you can use both during your stay as the bathing areas switch.

Yumeji no Yu includes a large bath, open-air bath, sleeping bath, hanging bath, sauna, and massage bath, with views of the Yomase River and distant mountains. Yumemi no Yu sits on the top floor and includes an open-air bath, large bath, sleeping bath, sauna, massage bath, hitase bath, and hanging bath.

For more privacy, Yuzuki no Yu is a reservable private open-air bath with a Shigaraki ware tub, open views, and a quiet setting for you and your companions. Selected room types also include private open-air hot spring baths, so you can soak without leaving your room.

The spring is a sodium chloride spring, listed as an alkaline hypotonic high-temperature spring. You can also book the private bedrock bath Raku, and massage rooms are available for deeper relaxation.

Guests with Tattoos

Because you can soak in a private onsen inside selected room types, you can enjoy the onsen regardless of tattoos.

For the public bath, if you have tattoos, check with the hotel directly before using the shared bathing areas.

Facilities

At YUDANAKA BREWERY COMPLEX U, you can enjoy a day-trip complex that connects your stay with the wider Yudanaka area. In Terrace Lounge Toki, available when you stay in a room with an open-air bath, you can slow down in a relaxed lounge setting. For deeper rest, Ganbanyoku Raku gives you a private bedrock bath experience.

You can also spend time in Lobby Lounge Issa, an atrium lounge with an open, welcoming feel. Dining feels more private at Nanohana Koji, a private-room dining area with 23 rooms, including sunken seating and chair seating. In the evening, Rooftop Japanese bar Yukigetsu Hana / Snow Moon Flower gives you a stylish place to end the day.

Activities

You can use Aburaya Tosen as a base for exploring Yudanaka and northern Nagano. Nearby highlights include Jigokudani Yaen-Koen, where wild Japanese macaques live in the valley, and Obuse, a cultural town linked with Katsushika Hokusai.

You can also plan day trips to places listed by the ryokan, including Matsumoto Castle, Togakushi Shrine, Lake Nojiri, Kurobe Dam, Mayumi Takahashi Doll Museum, Azumino Daio Wasabi Farm, and Karuizawa Shopping Plaza. For a slower stay, you can spend more time in Yudanaka itself, moving between hot springs, local food, nature, and the ryokan’s lounges and baths.
