Overview

Escape to the wooded landscape of Hanamaki Minami Onsenkyo at Garden Resort Haruka no Yu Kaze no Toki. Set in Matsukura Onsen beside the Toyosawa River, this hot spring ryokan places you among mountain greenery, autumn colour, and snow-covered scenery while keeping central Hanamaki within easy reach by car.

Dark wood, deep blue details, open interiors, and carefully arranged garden spaces create a welcoming atmosphere from the moment you arrive. You can settle into the lounge, listen to the river from the outdoor baths, enjoy seasonal Iwate cuisine, and watch the surrounding landscape change with the time of year.

You are around 20 minutes by car from Hanamaki Station and around 30 minutes from Shin-Hanamaki Station. A scheduled shuttle connects both stations with the Hanamaki Minami Onsenkyo area when reserved in advance.

Accommodation

You can choose from traditional Japanese rooms, Japanese rooms with beds, Western twin rooms, upgraded tatami rooms, and two suites with private open-air baths. Windows bring in views of the wooded Hanamaki Minami Onsenkyo landscape, although the exact outlook depends on your room’s position.

The Japanese Standard Room combines ten tatami mats with a four-tatami window-side sitting area. This classic layout gives you space to enjoy tea during the day before futons are arranged on the tatami for the night.

The smaller seven-tatami room also includes a window-side sitting area. Its compact layout works well when you prefer a simple traditional room and plan to spend much of your stay dining, bathing, or exploring Hanamaki.

The Nagomi Japanese Room offers ten tatami mats and a four-tatami sitting area. A work space added in 2023 includes power outlets and USB connections, giving you a practical place to use a laptop or charge your devices.

The Nagomi Japanese Twin places two low beds inside a ten-tatami room with an additional window-side area. You can enjoy the look and feel of tatami while sleeping in a bed rather than on a futon.

The Nagomi Japanese Modern Twin combines Japanese architectural details with two beds and a softer contemporary layout. The Wasou Superior Twin provides a larger tatami setting with twin beds, while the Wasou Superior Japanese Room gives you an upgraded traditional space with futon bedding.

The Japanese Classic Twin offers a calm Western-style sleeping arrangement with two beds and a window-side sitting area. Its deeper colours and traditional details create a more formal atmosphere than the other twin rooms.

For more privacy, two Japanese suites include their own outdoor baths. These spacious rooms allow you to bathe while looking towards seasonal greenery, autumn leaves, or snow. The private outdoor baths use heated regular water rather than natural hot spring water.

With the exception of the two open-air-bath suites, rooms do not include a private bath. You will have your own washbasin and toilet, and you can use the shared natural hot spring baths during your stay.

Your room includes complimentary Wi-Fi, air conditioning and heating, a television, refrigerator, safe, tea-making equipment, mineral water, yukata, a padded tanzen jacket, towels, a toothbrush, hand soap, and slippers. Every room is non-smoking.

Dining

Dinner introduces you to seasonal kaiseki cuisine prepared with ingredients from Iwate and the wider Tohoku region. Fresh seafood, locally raised meat, vegetables, and ingredients selected for the time of year appear across a sequence of carefully presented dishes.

Your dinner depends on your chosen meal plan. The Haruka course offers a lighter selection while still including seasonal flavours and Iwate-raised beef. The Kaze course adds a broader balance of seafood, meat, and seasonal dishes, including locally raised beef prepared to bring out its natural richness.

The Toki course offers a more elaborate meal with additional ingredients and courses. The highest dining plans may include an upgraded seasonal menu and a private dining setting when paired with selected accommodation.

Dinner normally moves from small starters and sashimi to a warm dish, grilled or roasted food, rice, soup, and dessert. The exact dishes change with the season and ingredient supply. Iwate sake and wine are available to complement the meal.

Breakfast is served as a Japanese and Western buffet. You can choose your preferred dishes from the counters, while the open kitchen adds freshly prepared items to the morning selection.

Both meals are served in Dining Yama no Kaze. You can sit at a standard table or use one of the sunken-kotatsu dining areas, depending on the seating arrangement. A limited number of private dining rooms are also available.

Onsen and Wellness

The natural spring at Haruka no Yu Kaze no Toki flows directly into the shared baths without circulation. The alkaline water has a pH of 9.3 and emerges from the source at approximately 44.8°C.

The water is classified as an alkaline simple high-temperature spring. Its smooth texture has given it a reputation as a skin-beautifying bath, while traditional bathing indications include muscle discomfort, joint discomfort, neuralgia, stiff shoulders, bruises, sprains, sensitivity to cold, fatigue, and recovery after illness.

Separate bathing areas serve men and women. Each side includes the spacious indoor Haruka no Yu bath and access to an outdoor bathing area, allowing you to enjoy the same free-flowing source in different surroundings.

The indoor bath has wide windows that bring natural light and views of the surrounding landscape into the bathing room. The generous tub gives you space to stretch out and enjoy the soft alkaline water.

Outside, Shoyo no Yu and Kawami no Yu place you close to the trees and the sound of the Toyosawa River. Shoyo no Yu was renewed as a cypress bath in 2022, adding the natural fragrance and warm texture of hinoki wood to the bathing experience. Kawami no Yu offers another open-air setting shaped by rocks, woodland, and flowing water.

During spring and summer, sunlight filters through the leaves above the outdoor baths. Autumn brings rich colour to the surrounding trees, while winter can cover the garden and riverbanks with snow.

You can normally bathe from check-in until midnight and again from 5:00 until 9:00. On Wednesdays and Thursdays, the baths close between the morning and afternoon periods for a full draining and cleaning process. Holiday schedules may lead to changes.

Shampoo, conditioner, body wash, and hairdryers are available in the bathing area. There is no sauna or reservable private bath.

You can arrange a massage in the dedicated massage room, subject to the daily schedule and availability.

Guests with Tattoos

If you have tattoos, you cannot use the shared indoor baths or open-air baths. Cover stickers are not offered as an alternative.

There is no reservable private onsen.

Facilities

After check-in or bathing, you can relax in the entrance lounge or visit Kaze no Tsudoi for complimentary coffee, fruit tea, and soft drinks. Shop Hana no Ne offers Iwate sweets, local products, drinks, and small souvenirs.

Activities

Use your stay to discover Hanamaki’s close connection with writer and poet Miyazawa Kenji. At the Miyazawa Kenji Memorial Museum, you can explore his life, manuscripts, music, scientific interests, and vision of the fictional world of Ihatov.

Nearby Miyazawa Kenji Fairy Tale Village turns his stories into imaginative indoor and outdoor spaces. You can walk through themed areas connected with the sky, earth, water, plants, and the universe, then explore the gardens and small exhibition buildings around the grounds.

The Takamura Kotaro Museum and Takamura Mountain Lodge introduce you to the sculptor and poet who spent around seven years living in the Hanamaki countryside after the Second World War. You can see the simple mountain home where he lived and learn how the local landscape influenced his later work.

For a slower day, you can explore the other hot spring communities of Hanamaki Minami Onsenkyo, follow scenic roads beside the Toyosawa River, or visit the shops and cultural attractions around central Hanamaki.

Seasonal events also take place across the city. Depending on your travel dates, you may find illuminations at Miyazawa Kenji Fairy Tale Village, exhibitions, local festivals, or special displays inside the ryokan.
