Overview
Ootoku gives you an intimate seafood and hot spring stay on the coast of Mikuni, Fukui Prefecture. The inn faces Oshima, known locally as the Island of the Gods, with the Sea of Japan shaping the view and atmosphere throughout your visit.
With only eight rooms, Ootoku keeps your stay quiet and personal. You can soak in mineral-rich Tojinbo Mikuni Onsen, enjoy seafood landed around Mikuni and Echizen, and watch the changing light over the water. The small scale also means you remain close to the dining rooms, baths, and shoreline.
The nearby Umi no Restaurant Ootoku sits only about ten seconds away on foot. Its large windows open toward the sea, giving you another place to enjoy the coastal scenery over lunch, dinner, or morning coffee.
Accommodation
Ootoku has four rooms in the Main Wing and four in the New Wing. Every room includes a toilet, washbasin, mini refrigerator, climate control, television, hair dryer, towels, bath towels, toiletries, and samue-style indoor clothing. Wi-Fi is available, and the building is non-smoking apart from a designated outdoor smoking area.
Mokko no Ma consists of two special Japanese-Western rooms, numbered 201 and 202. Renovated in November 2023, they use Echizen washi paper and Ajima mokko embroidery as design themes. Each room sleeps up to four people and includes Simmons beds and a private indoor bath filled with natural Tojinbo Mikuni Onsen water.
Tsubaki no Ma gives you a more secluded Japanese-Western setting with Simmons beds and its own private indoor bath. Soft lighting and warm materials create a comfortable place to rest after dinner or sightseeing.
Oshima is a Japanese room updated with Simmons beds. You can enjoy the feel of tatami without sleeping on a futon, making it a useful choice when you prefer a bed but still want a traditional room.
The standard Japanese rooms range from 8 to 16 tatami mats. Some have a rustic old-house character, while others use a cleaner Japanese design. The different sizes suit solo stays, couples, families, and small groups.
The New Wing has an elevator. The Main Wing does not, so you need to use stairs to reach its second-floor rooms. Check-in begins at 3:00 PM, and check-out is at 10:00 AM.
Dining
Dining sits at the heart of your stay. Owner-chef Shinichi Daitoku prepares seasonal courses using freshly landed fish, shellfish, local vegetables, and ingredients from Fukui. The menus change with the catch and the time of year, allowing the kitchen to serve each ingredient when it tastes its best.
From spring through autumn, course choices may include abalone, four kinds of sashimi, a seasonal fish dish, Echizen soba, a small Fukui sweet-shrimp rice bowl, soup, and a homemade dessert. Ootoku’s slow-cooked nikujaga is another signature dish, prepared so the meat and vegetables absorb the rich broth.
Seafood-focused plans add fish such as tilefish, nodoguro, or sasa-karei, depending on the day’s supply. Preparation may include simmering, steaming, frying, grilling, or meunière. Some courses also include wagyu steak, sukiyaki, or shabu-shabu.
Winter brings Echizen crab, normally served from November 7 through March 31. Full crab courses can include crab sashimi, hot boiled crab, grilled crab, crab tempura, crab-miso shabu-shabu, and crab rice porridge. You can select the size of the boiled crab when booking, from smaller crabs to large presentation-grade options. Female seiko crab may appear until around January 10, depending on supply.
Echizen red snow crab plans are also offered during parts of spring and autumn, normally from April through October apart from July and August. These courses may include boiled red snow crab, crab sashimi, grilled crab, tempura, shabu-shabu, and crab porridge.
Meals take place in one of three dining rooms. The main Japanese room normally uses tables and chairs, although floor seating may be arranged. The Western-style dining room gives you a brighter setting and also serves morning coffee. Breakfast is served in a dining space rather than inside your room.
Umi no Restaurant Ootoku opens for lunch from 11:00 AM to 3:30 PM, with last orders at 2:00 PM. Lunch menus change, but choices may include sashimi, seafood, fish prepared in different styles, nikujaga, meat dishes, and seasonal crab meals. The restaurant usually closes on Wednesdays.
Onsen and Wellness
Ootoku uses Tojinbo Mikuni Onsen No. 4 spring, which rises in the Ajima area close to the coast. The water is a sodium-calcium chloride spring classified as isotonic, neutral, and high-temperature. Its high salt and mineral content helps the warmth remain on your skin after bathing.
The source temperature is listed at 62.8°C. Traditional bathing indications include muscle and joint discomfort, neuralgia, stiff shoulders, bruises, sprains, sensitivity to cold, tiredness, minor cuts, burns, and support during recovery. Enjoy these as traditional onsen indications rather than medical treatment.
Separate indoor observation baths are available for men and women. Large windows look toward Oshima and the Sea of Japan, allowing you to watch the coastal light while you soak. Water servers are available in both changing rooms.
Mokko no Ma gives you natural hot spring water inside your room, allowing you to bathe in privacy whenever you wish. This is especially useful when you prefer to avoid shared bathing or want to enjoy the spring several times during your stay.
The hot spring contains a high level of sodium, calcium, chloride, and sulfate. Because the water is strong and naturally hot, begin with a shorter soak and take time to drink water between baths.
Guests with Tattoos
If you have tattoos, Mokko no Ma gives you a private natural hot spring bath inside your room. You can enjoy the onsen without entering the shared observation baths. Tsubaki no Ma also includes a private indoor bath, while access to the shared baths follows the bathing guidance provided when you arrive.
Facilities
Ootoku includes eight rooms, three dining rooms, separate observation baths for men and women, private-bath room categories, Wi-Fi, a small reception area, and parking for up to 15 cars. A five-seat vehicle can provide reserved transfers from Echizen Railway Mikuni Station.
Every room has a mini refrigerator, but the inn does not have drink vending machines. You can bring drinks for your room, although outside drinks cannot be taken into dinner. Credit cards and selected QR payment methods are accepted.
The New Wing has elevator access, while the Main Wing requires stairs. Handrails are available in parts of the building, and a wheelchair can be borrowed. Mokko no Ma also includes a handrail beside its private bath.
Activities
Oshima lies directly across the water and can be reached by its long red bridge. A walking route circles the island through coastal forest and past Ominato Shrine, with open views of the Sea of Japan along the way.
Tojinbo is also close by. You can walk beside dramatic rock formations, watch the waves below the cliffs, or take a sightseeing boat when sea conditions permit. The wider coastal walking trail connects Mikuni Sunset Beach, Tojinbo, Oshima, and Echizen Matsushima.
You can also visit Echizen Matsushima Aquarium, explore the old merchant streets of Mikuni Minato, or arrange a guided walk focused on Oshima and the history of the Kitamaebune trading ships. Discounted tickets for selected local attractions are sold at reception.
Your day can remain simple: start with a walk beside the sea, return for seafood, soak while looking toward Oshima, and finish with the sound of the waves outside.
