Overview

Stay beside Lake Suwa at RAKO Hananoi Hotel, a large hot spring hotel in Kami-Suwa Onsen with 155 rooms, the highest room count in the Suwa area. Its lakeside setting gives you easy access to waterfront walks, mountain scenery, historic shrines, museums, and the seasonal attractions of central Nagano.

Lake Suwa remains part of the experience throughout your stay. You can see the water from selected rooms, the breakfast restaurant, the rooftop terrace, and the open-air bathing area. On clear days, the views extend towards the Northern Alps, while some east-facing viewpoints reveal Takashima Castle and Mount Fuji in the distance.

You can shape your stay around natural hot spring bathing, seasonal Shinshu cuisine, outdoor fitness, business travel, or time with family. The broad room selection ranges from compact single accommodation to spacious Japanese rooms and an 80-square-metre panorama room.

Accommodation

RAKO Hananoi Hotel offers lake-view Japanese rooms, Japanese rooms with beds, Western twin rooms, large family layouts, and practical single rooms. Every room is non-smoking and includes complimentary Wi-Fi, individual climate control, a television, refrigerator, kettle, hairdryer, private wash facilities, towels, tea, and essential toiletries. Yukata, combs, razors, and shower caps are available from the self-service amenity area.

The 45-square-metre Lake-View Japanese Modern Twin occupies the upper floors of the Main Building. Two beds sit within a Japanese-inspired interior overlooking Lake Suwa. The Premium version includes Simmons beds, a sofa, and a small sink, while the Standard version uses FranceBed mattresses and a simpler open layout. Additional futons can be prepared on the floor when needed.

The Panorama Room occupies the sixth floor of the Palace Wing and measures 80 square metres. A wall of windows faces Lake Suwa, with views of the sunset, lights across the opposite shore, and the Northern Alps when visibility is good. The bathroom includes a whirlpool tub with a view towards the lake. The summer fireworks are not visible from this room.

The 40-square-metre Moderate Twin is a corner room on the upper floors of the Main Building. Its windows reveal part of Lake Suwa, Takashima Castle, the surrounding town, and Mount Fuji when the weather is clear. A whirlpool bath adds extra space for private bathing, although it does not use natural hot spring water.

The Lake-View Japanese Twin rooms combine tatami flooring with two permanent Simmons beds. The larger version provides 12.5 tatami mats, while the smaller version offers ten tatami mats. Both were partly renewed in March 2024 and allow you to enjoy Japanese design without sleeping on a futon.

The Spacious Lake-View Japanese Room combines ten-tatami and eight-tatami rooms with a window-side sitting area. Sliding partitions let you separate the two rooms when you want more privacy. From the upper floors, you can see Lake Suwa, the mountains, evening lights, seasonal foliage, and summer fireworks.

The Basic Lake-View Japanese Room provides 12.5 tatami mats and a counter beside the window. It faces Lake Suwa directly, giving you views of the water, night scenery, and summer fireworks. Futons are arranged on the tatami for sleeping.

The 28-square-metre Lake-View Twin faces the lake from the Palace Wing, with sunset and Northern Alps views possible in clear weather. The 25-square-metre Standard Twin faces the town and surrounding mountains, with a possible view of Mount Fuji. Lake-View Twin rooms do not provide a direct view of the summer fireworks.

Three 15-square-metre single-room styles support solo stays and business travel. The Standard Single includes a wide desk and town view, the Lake-View Single faces the water, and the Economy Single offers a simpler room without a scenic outlook.

Every room has its own bathroom, but the room baths use regular heated water rather than natural onsen water. Private natural hot spring bathing is available in the reservable baths on the spa floor.

Dining

Dinner brings together the produce and food traditions of Shinshu through Japanese and Chinese dining choices. Your confirmed plan determines the cuisine, menu, and dining location included in your stay.

The seasonal Shinanoji kaiseki courses feature ingredients connected with Suwa and the wider Nagano region. Depending on the season and selected plan, dinner may include Shinshu Premium Beef, wakasagi smelt from the Suwa area, Shinshu salmon raised in clear mountain water, lettuce from the Yatsugatake Highlands, Azumino wasabi, soba, seafood, and carefully arranged seasonal vegetables.

The Japanese meal follows a multi-course format, allowing you to enjoy appetisers, sashimi, grilled or cooked dishes, a main course, rice, soup, and dessert at a comfortable pace. Presentation changes with the season, drawing on local colours, ingredients, and regional food culture.

Restaurant Karin serves creative Chinese cuisine made with seafood and locally sourced ingredients. Shared dishes arrive hot from the kitchen, and private dining rooms are available within the restaurant. Selected accommodation plans include a complete Chinese dinner course, while Karin also opens for lunch and dinner on designated days.

Breakfast is served as a buffet at KOHANNO DINING, a lake-view restaurant decorated with Shinshu timber and wooden forms inspired by Suwa Taisha. The selection combines Japanese, Western, local, and Chinese dishes.

Regional breakfast items include kanten jelly made with local agar and Nagano fruit such as rhubarb or apple. You may also find Shinshu favourites such as sanzoku-yaki fried chicken, onikake soba, locally produced miso, warm Chinese dishes, rice, bread, salads, and morning drinks. Breakfast normally runs from 6:30 until 9:30, with final entry at 9:00, although busy dates may follow a different schedule.

Allergy adjustments must be requested at least three days before arrival. Substitute dishes can be prepared for eggs, milk, shrimp, crab, peanuts, and buckwheat. Wheat and several ingredients used in stocks, soups, and seasonings cannot be removed. Vegetarian and vegan menu changes are not available, and all food is prepared in shared kitchens.

Onsen and Wellness

The sixth-floor spa area contains two large bathing sections, Gekka no Yu and Suika no Yu. The men’s and women’s assignments change after the overnight cleaning period, giving you the chance to experience both sides during one stay.

The natural water comes from Kami-Suwa Onsen and is classified as a simple hot spring with a hypotonic, weakly alkaline, high-temperature character. The source temperature is approximately 57°C. Traditional bathing indications include muscle and joint discomfort, neuralgia, stiff shoulders, sensitivity to cold, fatigue, digestive concerns, and recovery after illness.

The open-air bath looks across Lake Suwa and uses large rocks brought from the Yatsugatake area. During the day, you can watch the water and surrounding mountains. Around sunset, the lake and sky often take on warmer colours, followed by the evening lights across the opposite shore.

The sake bath combines Kami-Suwa hot spring water with local Suwa sake. A light sake fragrance rises from the water, creating one of the property’s most distinctive bathing experiences.

Other baths use materials and themes connected with Nagano. The Obsidian Bath incorporates stone associated with Wada Pass, while the Hot-Stone Bath uses green serpentinite from the Ina area. The Zero Magnetic Field Bath takes its theme from Bungui Pass. These tubs add different colours, textures, and settings to the shared bathing circuit.

Suika no Yu includes Manju no Yu, an Eastern herbal bath prepared with traditional plant ingredients. Gekka no Yu includes Senju no Yu, a Western herbal bath containing kihada, the tree associated with Suwa City. Both shared bathing areas also have a dry sauna.

The shared baths normally open from 15:00 until 10:00 the following morning. A late-night cleaning closure takes place before the men’s and women’s sides change. The open-air baths and saunas may follow shorter schedules.

Three reservable private bathing spaces give you a quieter way to enjoy the onsen. Karin no Yu provides an accessible layout with an indoor bath, an open-air bath, changing space, and a private toilet. It suits small families and anyone who needs easier movement around the bathing area.

Ringo no Yu and Anzu no Yu are smaller lake-side baths for two people. Both use free-flowing Kami-Suwa Onsen water and offer views towards Lake Suwa. Because the source reaches approximately 57°C, the water enters the baths gradually to maintain a comfortable temperature.

Private sessions last around 45 minutes. Reservations open one month before your stay and should be completed in advance because availability is limited.

Guests with Tattoos

If you have tattoos, you cannot use Gekka no Yu, Suika no Yu, the shared open-air baths, herbal baths, saunas, or communal changing areas.

You can enjoy the natural spring in Karin no Yu, Ringo no Yu, or Anzu no Yu. These private baths require advance reservations, and booking opens one month before your stay. Ringo no Yu and Anzu no Yu provide free-flowing onsen water and lake views, while Karin no Yu adds an accessible layout with both indoor and outdoor bathing.

Facilities

RAKO Hananoi Hotel includes a front lobby, lounge, souvenir shop, KOHANNO DINING, Restaurant Karin, shared hot spring baths, three private baths, dry saunas, a rooftop terrace, dining halls, meeting rooms, and banquet spaces. The first-floor shop carries Shinshu miso, local sake, wakasagi products, regional snacks, folk crafts, and travel essentials. A large banquet hall supports conferences, celebrations, lectures, and organised meals, while smaller rooms provide more private settings.

KOHANNO TERRACE is reserved for overnight stays and opens throughout the year when weather conditions allow. From the rooftop, you can look west across Lake Suwa and east towards Takashima Castle and Mount Fuji. Power outlets, Wi-Fi, seating, and a hand-washing area are available. The terrace normally opens from 15:00 to 22:00 and again from 6:00 to 11:00.

The Main Building and Palace Wing have elevators. Accessible features include entrance ramps, wheelchairs to borrow, accessible toilets, shower chairs, handrails in the shared baths, and the barrier-free Karin no Yu private bath. Baby-changing tables are available in shared toilets, while baby beds and infant baskets are provided in the bathing areas.

Complimentary Wi-Fi is available in the rooms and selected shared spaces. The property also has an AED, designated smoking areas, parking for around 150 cars, and two reservable 6-kW EV chargers.

Activities

Outdoor Fitness Suwa gives you the chance to experience Lake Suwa and its surroundings through guided fitness and nature programmes. Seasonal options may include studio yoga, lakeside yoga, tai chi, Nordic walking, trekking, kayaking, and stand-up paddleboarding. Beginners can join selected sessions, and equipment such as yoga mats or paddleboards is included with the relevant programme.

Programmes require separate reservations and operate according to the season, weather, and current schedule. A stay at RAKO Hananoi Hotel gives you access to a discount on eligible Outdoor Fitness Suwa activities.

For a slower day, walk beside Lake Suwa or spend time on KOHANNO TERRACE as the light changes across the water. The lakeside area also offers seasonal cruises, winter wakasagi fishing, cycling, and waterside parks, subject to operating conditions.

Takashima Castle is around ten minutes away on foot. Once known as the Floating Castle of Suwa, it stands within a park known for spring cherry blossom and wisteria. Katakurakan is around 12 minutes away on foot and offers a historic public bath inside a Western-style building from the early 20th century.

You can travel around Lake Suwa to visit the four shrines that form Suwa Taisha: Kamisha Honmiya, Kamisha Maemiya, Shimosha Akimiya, and Shimosha Harumiya. Near Harumiya, the Manji Stone Buddha provides another distinctive stop.

The Venus Line offers a scenic mountain drive through Tateshina, Lake Shirakaba, Kirigamine, and the Utsukushigahara Highlands. Museums around the lake include the Suwa City Museum, SUWA Glass Village, the Sanritz Hattori Museum of Arts, and the Taizi Harada Art Museum.

During the summer fireworks season, select lake-facing Japanese rooms provide direct views of displays over Lake Suwa. Firework dates, scale, and visibility depend on the annual schedule and weather.

Additional Features

Check-in begins at 15:00, and check-out is by 11:00. Every accommodation room, meeting room, and banquet space is non-smoking, with smoking limited to designated areas.
