Overview
Stay at Kinseikan Seseragi in Tanigawa Onsen, at the foot of Mount Tanigawa in Minakami, Gunma. Founded in 1913, this 22-room ryokan stands beside the clear Tanigawa stream, with forest and mountain scenery visible throughout the year.
The ryokan owns four natural hot spring sources, allowing every bath to use 100% free-flowing water. No cold water or heated water is added. Instead, the temperature is managed by carefully adjusting the flow from each source.
Your stay focuses on natural hot spring bathing, monthly kaiseki dining, and warm, understated hospitality. In spring, you can see cherry blossoms and fresh leaves. Summer brings deep green forest, autumn covers the valley in red and gold, and winter surrounds the outdoor baths with snow.
Accommodation
Choose from Japanese rooms with futon bedding, Japanese-Western rooms with beds, spacious adjoining layouts, and two rooms with private open-air hot spring baths. All 22 rooms are non-smoking, with 18 Japanese rooms and four Japanese-Western rooms.
The two rooms with private open-air baths sit on the fourth floor. Each room combines a 12.5-tatami main room, a six-tatami adjoining room, and a wooden-floor sitting area of around 4.5 tatami mats. Large windows look toward the mountains and sky.
Your private bath is made from either Shigaraki pottery or hinoki cypress and receives free-flowing hot spring water. You can soak at any time while listening to the stream and looking across the surrounding trees. The spring water is also suitable for drinking.
The rooms with a wooden-floor living area combine a ten-tatami Japanese room with an eight-tatami living space. Washi tatami, bamboo flooring, a large picture window, and a decorative fireplace create a comfortable setting for reading, talking, or enjoying the forest view.
The spacious adjoining rooms include ten-, six-, and 4.5-tatami sections that you can separate with sliding doors and shoji screens. A terrace lets you step outside for fresh air, while two washbasins make the room easier to share. During winter, the 4.5-tatami space becomes a sunken kotatsu seating area.
The rooms with beds combine two Simmons semi-double beds with a ten-tatami Japanese room and an additional 4.5-tatami space. You can separate the bedroom from the tatami area when you want more privacy. Futons can also be prepared in the Japanese room, and the smaller tatami area becomes a sunken kotatsu in winter.
The standard Japanese rooms include a ten-tatami main room and a three-tatami window-side space. An L-shaped window brings in plenty of daylight, while a small terrace places you close to the trees and mountain air.
Room facilities depend on your selected category. Standard features include heating and air conditioning, a television, refrigerator with chargeable drinks, tea set, safe, towels, yukata, toiletries, a hair dryer, and feather bedding. Free Wi-Fi is available in every room, while private bathroom facilities differ between room types.
Dining
Dinner is served as a monthly changing kaiseki meal, using seasonal produce and ingredients connected to Gunma and the surrounding mountain region. The menu changes throughout the year, allowing you to experience different flavours with each season.
Rather than relying on extravagant ingredients, the cooking focuses on careful preparation and familiar Japanese flavours. Each dish arrives in sequence, giving you time to enjoy the presentation, texture, and natural character of the ingredients. Menus may change when the supply of seasonal produce changes.
You normally dine in a semi-private space with comfortable chairs and table seating. The dining area looks toward the garden, allowing you to enjoy your meal in a quiet setting rather than in a large open restaurant. A spacious Japanese banquet room is also available.
Dinner begins at 18:00, 18:30, or 19:00. You choose your preferred starting time when you arrive.
Breakfast begins at 07:30 and features a Japanese meal made with carefully selected ingredients. The balanced dishes give you a gentle start before another hot spring soak or a day around Minakami.
The drinks selection includes sake from Gunma and neighbouring Niigata, along with wine and champagne chosen to accompany the seasonal cuisine.
Food allergies require notice at least three days before your stay, or one week in advance when you stay during a holiday period. Individual ingredients can be changed where possible, but the kitchen cannot guarantee the complete removal of allergens from seasonings, cookware, or preparation areas. Vegan meals are not available.
Onsen and Wellness
Four individual Tanigawa Onsen sources feed every bath with 100% free-flowing water. The sources have different natural temperatures, and the flow from each one is adjusted to maintain comfortable bathing conditions without adding cold water or heated water.
The water is a clear, weakly alkaline simple spring with a mild feel against the skin. Traditional bathing indications include neuralgia, rheumatism, sensitivity to cold, digestive concerns, fatigue, and skin care.
Seseragi-no-Yu is the mixed open-air bath beside the Tanigawa stream. You can soak close to the flowing water while looking toward cherry blossoms, summer greenery, autumn leaves, or winter snow.
The mixed bath becomes women-only from 07:00 to 10:00 and closes for cleaning from 10:00 to 14:00. Between midnight and 05:00, you can use it privately when it is available.
Regular towels cannot be worn inside Seseragi-no-Yu because they may affect the spring water. Special bathing wear made from non-woven fabric is available from the shop when you prefer additional coverage.
Separate open-air baths connect to the men’s and women’s indoor bathing areas. You can enjoy the mountain air, the sound of the river, and birdsong while remaining within a gender-separated bathing space. These baths close for cleaning from 10:00 to 14:00.
The men’s indoor bath, Monju-no-Yu, and the women’s indoor bath, Yakushi-no-Yu, were renovated in January 2024 with improved accessibility. Ramps and additional handrails make entry easier.
Each indoor bathing area contains two tubs: a warm hinoki cypress bath and a stone bath made with Sanbaseki stone from Gunma. Large windows frame the forest outside. The indoor baths close for cleaning from 10:00 to 14:00.
Sakuya Hime-no-Yu is a compact private bath where you can enjoy the same free-flowing spring water without sharing the space. You do not need to reserve it. Simply use it when it is vacant. The bath is complimentary and closes for cleaning from 11:00 to 14:00.
A drinking fountain inside the ryokan lets you taste the hot spring water. Drinking the water has traditionally been associated with support for long-term digestive concerns and constipation. You can also take hot spring water and fresh Tanigawa water home when you bring your own container.
For further relaxation, you can book facial and body treatments at the MERSK C salon. Treatments use products from the French skincare brand Institut Esthederm and are available to both men and women. In-room massage can also be arranged.
Guests with Tattoos
When you have tattoos, use the private Sakuya Hime-no-Yu bath or choose one of the two rooms with a private open-air hot spring bath. These options let you enjoy the natural spring water without entering a communal bathing area.
Avoid the mixed open-air bath, gender-separated indoor baths, and shared outdoor baths when your tattoos are visible.
Facilities
The lobby lounge overlooks the changing forest scenery and gives you a comfortable place to sit before check-in or between baths. Complimentary coffee is available here from 08:00 to 10:00 each morning.
Meals are served in a garden-facing dining area with semi-private chair and table seating. A 68-tatami Japanese banquet hall provides additional space for larger gatherings.
At the shop, you can browse original Kinseikan Seseragi products, including hot spring soap and handmade furikake prepared by the head chef. Special bathing wear for the mixed open-air bath is also available here.
The Pocket Gallery displays works that form part of a changing art auction. The exhibits are replaced regularly, giving you something new to see as you walk through the property. Near the dining area, you can also read haiku created by members of a poetry group that meets at the ryokan each year.
A book corner includes picture books, novels, and essays that you can take back to your room. When you want evening entertainment, you can reserve the private karaoke room, which operates from 20:00 to 23:00.
A pillow menu lets you choose between buckwheat-husk, feather, silk, eucalyptus-chip, and Binchotan charcoal pillows. This allows you to select the height and texture that feel most comfortable.
Skincare and bathing products are provided in the public bath areas. Choices include hot spring soap, lotions, gel creams, cleansing products, shampoo, conditioner, baby soap, and basic grooming items.
Wheelchair access includes a ramp at the entrance, handrails along selected corridors and stairways, elevator access between floors, and added support rails inside the public baths. Wheelchairs can also be borrowed, subject to availability.
Free Wi-Fi is available throughout the rooms. The entire building is non-smoking, with a designated smoking area outside.
Activities
Mount Tanigawa gives you access to mountain scenery, seasonal walking routes, and winter landscapes. The Tanigawadake Joch cable car reaches Tenjindaira in as little as seven minutes, where you can continue by lift for a wider view across the surrounding peaks.
At Ichinokurasawa, you can see one of Japan’s best-known rock faces, along with lingering summer snow and bright autumn foliage. Guided electric buses operate during selected periods and provide an easier way to reach the viewing area.
Suwakyo Gorge has a maintained walking path beside the river, with bridges, waterfalls, parks, and viewpoints along the route. For a shorter outing, Tenichi Art Museum is around 300 metres from the ryokan and displays work by Japanese and European artists.
Outdoor experiences available around Minakami include rafting, canoeing, horseback riding, paragliding, tennis, golf, skiing, and snowboarding. You can also arrange local craft experiences such as soba making and pottery.
After exploring, you can return for a free-flowing hot spring bath, a seasonal kaiseki dinner, and complimentary morning coffee overlooking the trees.
