Overview

Wake up beside Lake Chuzenji at Hatago Nagomi, a small 15-room retreat in the mountain landscape of Oku-Nikko. Every room faces the lake, placing the water, forested slopes, and changing seasonal colours directly outside your window.

The location makes it easy to enjoy both active days and slower moments. Take a sightseeing cruise, walk to Kegon Falls, explore the wetlands of Oku-Nikko, or simply sit with a drink and watch the light move across the lake. When you return, a sulfur-rich open-air onsen and seasonal Japanese dining help you settle into a quieter pace.

Accommodation

All rooms are Western-style and include Simmons beds with pocket-coil mattresses. You can choose between a 26-square-metre Standard Twin and a 38-square-metre Deluxe Twin, with every room offering views across Lake Chuzenji.

The Standard Twin combines two beds with a comfortable sitting area. Extra beds can be added when you are staying together. For more space, the Deluxe Twin includes an upgraded Simmons mattress and a larger floor plan for relaxing between sightseeing trips.

Connecting accommodation joins two Standard Twin Rooms through an internal door. This layout gives you two private bathrooms and more shared space, making it a practical choice when you want to stay close without sharing one room.

Your room includes heating and air conditioning, a television, refrigerator, electric kettle, safe, private bath, washlet toilet, hairdryer, towels, slippers, samue loungewear, and DHC bathing and skincare products. All rooms are non-smoking.

There is no elevator, and the rooms sit between the second and fourth floors. Request a lower-floor room when booking if climbing stairs may be difficult.

Dining

Begin your morning with a breakfast shaped by local and seasonal ingredients. On weekdays, you can usually choose between a Japanese or Western set meal. On weekends and public holidays, breakfast normally changes to a Japanese and Western buffet, although the format may change during selected seasons.

The breakfast selection may include freshly baked bread, grilled fish, simmered dishes, handmade curry, salads, fruit, Nikko Kisuge eggs, Nikko milk, and Caspian Sea yoghurt.

Dinner at Restaurant Nantai focuses on Japanese kaiseki and flavours from Tochigi. The current seasonal course brings together chawanmushi, Nikko nama-yuba, Yashio trout, a dashi-rich chicken hot pot, selected Japanese beef steak, soba, seasonal tempura, and handmade anmitsu. Individual dishes change as ingredients move through the seasons.

You can also choose from Japanese set meals and individual dishes such as sashimi, grilled food, fried dishes, noodles, and rice bowls. Local sake and beer are available with dinner. Restaurant Nantai opens from 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM.

Onsen and Wellness

The bathing area includes separate indoor and open-air baths for men and women. The indoor bath uses heated water drawn from Lake Chuzenji, giving you a gentler option when you have sensitive skin or prefer to avoid the stronger sulfur spring.

Outside, you can soak in 100% free-flowing natural water carried from Nikko Yumoto Onsen. Around 14,000 litres enter the baths each day without circulation or reuse.

The hydrogen sulfide spring may appear clear and emerald green on one day, then turn milky white on another as the minerals react with the air. Small white particles in the water are natural deposits known as yuno-hana.

The deep outdoor bath allows you to settle into the water up to your shoulders while feeling the cool Oku-Nikko air. The spring is associated with relief from fatigue, sensitivity to cold, muscle discomfort, nerve pain, rheumatic discomfort, high blood pressure, and some skin conditions.

Because the sulfur content is strong, shorter bathing sessions may feel more comfortable than one long soak. The baths open from 5:30 AM to 10:00 AM and from 3:00 PM to midnight.

Day-use bathing is not available, allowing you to enjoy the baths in a quieter setting during your stay.

Guests with Tattoos

You can use both the shared indoor bath and the natural open-air hot spring if you have tattoos. You do not need to cover them.

Facilities

Restaurant Nantai serves breakfast and dinner, while Café & Bar Shirane gives you a lakeside setting for coffee, tea, seasonal desserts, and local alcoholic drinks. Large windows keep Lake Chuzenji in view while you take a break between sightseeing trips.

The first-floor shop carries locally made products, crafts, and small keepsakes from the Nikko area. You also have access to free Wi-Fi, a coin laundry, vending machines, a mineral-water server, a shared microwave, and a daily newspaper corner.

Yukata, geta sandals, and hanten jackets are available to borrow. Free parking is provided across three parking areas, although your car may need to be moved to another space when the closest area is full.

Activities

The Lake Chuzenji sightseeing cruise departure point is around one minute away on foot. During its operating season, you can travel around the lake or join a limited route toward Senjugahama, seeing the surrounding mountains from the water.

Walk to Kegon Falls to watch water from Lake Chuzenji drop 97 metres into the gorge. The nearby Nikko Natural Science Museum introduces you to the wildlife, geology, waterfalls, and cultural history of Oku-Nikko.

For a longer day outdoors, follow the nature trail across Senjogahara, explore the shores of Lake Yunoko, or visit Ryuzu Falls and Yudaki Falls. Seasonal changes bring fresh greenery, summer flowers, colourful autumn leaves, and snow-covered scenery.

You can also visit Chuzenji Futarasan Shrine beside the lake or travel down Irohazaka toward Nikko Toshogu and the shrines and temples of central Nikko.

Additional Features

Check-in begins at 3:00 PM, and check-out is by 10:00 AM. Arrive by 7:00 PM when your stay includes dinner or by 9:00 PM when it does not.

The Fune no Eki Chuzenji bus stop is around one minute away on foot and connects the lakeside area with the stations in central Nikko. Luggage storage is available before check-in and after checkout.

With lake views from every room, comfortable Simmons beds, tattoo-friendly shared bathing, seasonal cuisine, and easy access to Oku-Nikko’s best-known scenery, Hatago Nagomi gives you a welcoming base for enjoying Lake Chuzenji throughout the year.
