Overview
Wake to the changing colours of Lake Chuzenji at Hana-An, an intimate 20-room hot spring hotel in Oku-Nikko. Every room looks across the lake, keeping the water, surrounding mountains, and seasonal scenery in view throughout your stay.
The location makes sightseeing simple without losing the feeling of a quiet lakeside escape. Kegon Falls, the Lake Chuzenji sightseeing boats, local shops, and the main bus stop are all within walking distance. After exploring, you can return for two distinct natural hot springs, creative Japanese cuisine, and time with a book in the library.
Hana-An combines the privacy and convenience of a hotel with the warmth of a Japanese ryokan. It works especially well when you want easy access to Oku-Nikko while still having space to slow down between outings.
Accommodation
Choose from eight room styles, all with Lake Chuzenji views and Simmons beds. The selection ranges from compact twin rooms to larger rooms with tatami areas and private natural hot spring baths.
Four special room categories include their own bath supplied with alkaline water from Nikko Wanoshiro Onsen. You can enjoy the spring privately at any time of day.
The 46-square-metre Executive Twin Utsushimi combines two beds with a raised tatami area where additional futons can be prepared. Its view bath looks across the lake toward Mount Nantai.
The 39-square-metre Executive Double Tsukimi includes a wide Simmons king bed, a private onsen view bath, and a window-side platform designed for enjoying the lake and moonlit sky.
The 42-square-metre Premium Twin Sasanami and 33-square-metre Superior Twin Nagimi each include a semi-open-air natural onsen bath. Both allow you to soak privately while looking toward Lake Chuzenji. Children under 12 cannot stay in these four bath-equipped special room categories.
The Japanese-Style Twin Rooms measure 33 to 36 square metres and combine two beds with a raised tatami area. The 42-square-metre Deluxe Twin adds a sofa bed and more space for relaxing, while the Moderate and Standard Twin Rooms provide simpler layouts for a comfortable lakeside stay.
Your room includes heating and air conditioning, a private bathroom, washlet toilet, television, refrigerator, safe, humidifying air purifier, hairdryer, samue loungewear, towels, slippers, and toiletries. All rooms are non-smoking.
Dining
Dinner brings the seasons of Nikko to your table through creative Japanese cuisine. Fresh vegetables, mountain produce, seafood, Nikko yuba, and regional meat are prepared to highlight their natural flavours rather than cover them with heavy seasoning.
A seasonal course may include small appetisers, sashimi, yuba, grilled fish, steamed vegetables, Kirifuri Highland beef, local rice, soup, and a fruit-based dessert. Dishes change from month to month according to the ingredients available.
Breakfast centres on Hana-An’s gentle morning ochazuke. Tochigi-grown Koshihikari rice is served with a flavourful broth made from fresh vegetables, accompanied by small local and seasonal dishes. It gives you a warm but light start before a day around the lake.
Breakfast and dinner are served in the wood-accented restaurant, where windows look toward Lake Chuzenji. During busy periods, meals follow two sittings, and you choose from the available times when you arrive.
Food allergy requests must be arranged before your stay. The kitchen cannot guarantee completely allergen-free meals and cannot prepare special changes requested on the day.
Onsen and Wellness
Hana-An lets you experience two natural hot spring sources in one bathhouse. Separate areas for men and women each include a stone indoor bath and an open-air bath.
The indoor bath uses alkaline simple spring water from Nikko Wanoshiro Onsen. The gentle water has added water and is valued for its soft feel and warming qualities.
The open-air bath contains sulfur water carried from Oku-Nikko Yumoto Onsen, around 12 kilometres away. The water flows directly from the source without added water, bringing the distinctive scent and mineral character of Yumoto Onsen to the lakeside.
You can soak outside beneath the daytime sky or return in the evening when the mountain air feels cooler. The two waters are associated with relief from fatigue, sensitivity to cold, muscle and joint discomfort, stiff shoulders, nerve pain, and some skin conditions.
The shared baths open from 6:00 AM to 10:00 AM and from 3:00 PM to midnight. Towels, bathing products, skincare items, and several shampoo choices are prepared in the bathhouse.
The Utsushimi, Tsukimi, Sasanami, and Nagimi rooms include private Wanoshiro Onsen baths that you can use throughout your stay.
Guests with Tattoos
You cannot use the shared indoor or open-air baths if you have permanent tattoos, temporary tattoos, or tattoo stickers.
You can enjoy natural hot spring bathing privately when you reserve Utsushimi, Tsukimi, Sasanami, or Nagimi. Each of these rooms includes its own Wanoshiro Onsen bath.
Facilities
The first floor brings the main shared spaces together, including the restaurant, library, shop, hot spring bathhouse, massage-chair area, and lobby. You can choose a book from the library and read from 3:00 PM to midnight or return between 6:00 AM and 11:00 AM.
Two massage chairs stand near the bathhouse for extra relaxation after sightseeing. The shop carries Japanese accessories and small items selected to reflect Hana-An’s character.
Arrive before 5:00 PM and you can begin your stay with seasonal welcome tea chosen by a tea specialist. You can also borrow traditional Nikko geta for a walk around the lakeside area.
Free Wi-Fi covers the rooms and shared spaces. Complimentary parking and an electric-vehicle charging point are available. All rooms are non-smoking, with a designated smoking area on the first floor.
Activities
Walk to Kegon Falls in around seven minutes and watch Lake Chuzenji’s water plunge 97 metres into the gorge. An observation platform reached by elevator brings you closer to the base of the falls.
The Lake Chuzenji sightseeing boat pier is also nearby. During the operating season, you can see the forested shoreline, Mount Nantai, and historic lakeside buildings from the water.
Visit Futarasan Shrine Chugushi beside the lake, explore the former British and Italian embassy villas, or follow the shoreline for views that change with the season. Spring brings fresh green leaves, summer offers cool mountain air, and autumn covers the area in rich red and gold tones.
Travel farther into Oku-Nikko for the walking trails of Senjogahara, Ryuzu Falls, Yudaki Falls, and Lake Yunoko. You can also descend Irohazaka to visit Nikko Toshogu, Rinnoji Temple, and the other UNESCO-listed shrines and temples of central Nikko.
